Day 3 - The Allegheny Front Trail - Moshannon State Forest - PA
Day 3 of a 3-day backpacking adventure around the Allegheny Front Trail in Moshannon State Forest in Pennsylvania. A long hike back to where we started, through high grass and ferns and checking out the campsites along the way. The final 3 miles back to the car were the most difficult part of the whole day but had the best views. If I could change anything about this hike, I would have gone clockwise instead, if only to avoid that brutal finish. Maybe next time.

Day 1 of a 3-day adventure around the Allegheny Front Trail in Moshannon State Forest in Pennsylvania in the middle of summer. Hot days, rain, bugs, long miles and overgrown trails. If that doesn't sound like fun, well it actually was! The trail was beautiful and more challenging than I expected, but worth it.

A relaxing overnight adventure with no talking, no music, no animations, and no subtitles. Just the sights and sounds of nature, and my footsteps on the trail. This is my 3rd time hiking in this area, so I thought I'd try something different with this video. If you would like to know more of the details about which trails I hiked and how far, check out one of my previous videos in Pinchot. Rela...

An icy cold overnight adventure in January in Vermont, hiking a few miles on the Appalachian Trail to a very frozen Little Rock Pond and camping overnight at the tenting area near the pond. Then hiking back out with a stop to check out the pond and the shelter before heading back to the trailhead. Beautiful views and lots of snow and ice!

Persistence indeed. Seems prudent to understand one's water sources before consuming. I was hiking through farmland and there was no filtering anything for me. I found a gas station and bought what I needed. Anyway, hoping the final stage brings some easier miles.

Thanks! I always record audio on a separate device from the camera so I can get better environmental sounds, and I record in wave audio for better quality. I'm using a Zoom H1 recorder with Roland CS-10EM Binaural Microphones.

Wow the trails have been designed for toddlers to hike. None of this was around in the 1980's. Wonder if park service located the lean-to we built. Probably dismantled/burned. Trail to and up Marcy, was very rugged and swampy. Made too easy for today's relaxed hikers.

The view from those lookouts was gorgeous as any I've ever seen. The Catskills are wilder than their reputation. I hope more people decide to leave NYC for good and settle in the Catskills permanently. It would be nice to see the place make a comeback.

Thanks for the awesome walkthrough! I've been doing easier overnight hikes from Caledonia up to Big Flat Tower and back for the past few Springs. Another, nice scenic route I like, if you want to make it a little more of a loop or have more campsite options, is to cut off onto Greenwood Rd. to Beaver Trail (around the huge lake) to Rocky Knob trail. Rocky Knob has some really nice, piney, open spots to camp. You do miss the Quarry Gap shelter etc. which is a highlight of this section, but you get a little more variety of Michaux.

Thank you for posting this video! I'm hiking it starting this Sunday and on the fence on whether I want to use my new Lone Peak 7s or the Topo Trailventure 2's I used last year. It looks like there's not much in the way of bouldering or rocky climbs - is that accurate? The Lone Peaks are notoriously bad at gripping wet rock, and it's going to rain a bunch.

    • @downtoearthadventures1528

You are correct, there's not much bouldering or rocky climbs on this trail. Just be careful crossing those streams though. I had to learn the hard way. LOL

You make great videos man and i hope to see more of your adventures, i was thinking of going up Algonquin through the avalanche path and you showed me just how bad it is, not a trail you would want to go down on and if you plan to go up need good hiking shoes.

I hiked Algonquin many years ago from the other direction and returned via the Avalanche Lake catwalk along the cliff side. Too bad you missed that as it’s very beautiful. I did most of my hiking in the White Mountains and in the Mt. Kahtadin area. Your cinematography and editing are excellent and I especially liked how you edited out the selfie stick and camera. I’d never seen anyone else do that. Happy trails!
