I made this vid cause I was bored. Hope you liked it.
Ahem... hello, ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, and dudes of all teenages, as well as the, uh, gals. My name is Christian Chandler; I am here, and y'all are there. [chuckles] This message is for everyone of the present and the future, beyond this date: February 24th, 2007th. My birthday. My 25th birthday. [holds up 2 fingers] I am high-functioning autistic, and in my 25 years, I have seen and learned so much. And today, I am share--intend to share some wise words that I hope each and every one of you will take to heart and will offer yourself and everyone else a better, brighter future. First off, remember that going to school is not a torture. It is a place of learning, a place for growing, a place where you form the spilling of your own opinions, your own feelings, and your own personality. So learn everything you are able to, and grow with it. Now, you should also be able to try something for yourself, before forming praise or detest of it. As long as those things will not harm you, or shorten your lifetime in any way, it's totally cool. What is totally NOT cool, though, is thinking or doing these things, which are very harmful to you, and definitely gr-will gross out those around you that don't do it, because I haven't done it and I don't like it-doing either of them. You should avoid at all costs smoking, drinking alcohol, and intaking any similar icky dangerous stuff. And smoking will eventually cause cancer, and it will-you'll be more likely to get heart attacks, viruses, and your life will be cut drastically short. They don't call cigarettes and cigars "death sticks" for nothing, other than killing you slowly. If I could, I would take every last ounce of tobacky, put 'em on a rocket, and shoot 'em up to the Moon. [Desi walks to front of the house in the background] And for, uh, alcohol, they'll cause, uh, liver dysfunction, kidney prob-kidney failures, and uh, not only that, but, when you get drunk enough, bar fights and automobile accidents. So it's a real slow-acting poison. And I haven't done either one, and look at me now, I'm, uh... [puffs out his chest as a truck passes by blasting AC/DC from the stereo] fit as a fiddle, and I'm livin' twenty-five, hopin' to live on to be about eighty to a hundred. And y'all-hopefully, y'all will get a chance to get up to that ripe old age, as well. Now, among the better things you should definitely try before despising, is some of the hobbies of those of your own-opposite gender. Like, uh, for example, if you are a young gentleman, I recommend buying yourself a My Little Pony figure of your favorite color or whatever. Now, uh, stroking the hair of said pony is very relaxing and therapeutic, and also rubbing it against your cheek. That's... nice. And also, uh, you can pretend that, uh, the pony is, uh, that girl you want to take you wanna take out to-you wanna take out sometime, and talk to the pony like you would talk to the girl. Now for the, uh, ladies I would recommend... a good old Autobot from Transformers. Because you can get to learn how to examine the mechanics... and variations of... each and every... I mean, of the, uh, Autobot you have... like, uh, you would tr-like you would learn how... a man... works. And it'll allow you to feel more comfortable in approaching, and talking to, that boy you've been flirtin' from a distance, or, uh, just have been, uh, flirting with from a distance. And, uh, hopefully, uh, all you have to do is just end up and say "hello". I mean, it's not so hard. All you have to do is say "hello" to the man, ladies; that's all. And everything will just get going from there. And also, uh, with the, uh, Autobot, while it's in vehicle mode you can pret-drive down that imaginary fast lane. But any-in any case, uh, while few people may ridicule you, you should not worry about it, because most everybody will be o-totally okay with it, because it won't matter. It won't matter, because... [completely loses his place] ...they see you enjoyin' it, and it's totally cool, if you're enjoying it. So you enjoy it, just do it-don't worry about other people's opi-pinions. Because, uh, compared to the other schools, those people who disregard you are just total peanuts. And I'm not talkin' Charlie Brown; I'm talkin' 'bout the little nuts after the shells. The real peanut gallery. That would be peanuts, wouldn't it? Also keep in mind that, while you're playin' with these things, you should keep in mind of what your true, original gender is. Because, uh, it's like you worry about that girl you want to take on a date-YOUNG MAN!-or, uh, likewise, you feel more comfortable to approach that boy-by just saying "hello"-that you've been checkin' out from a distance-YOUNG LADY!-and hopefully in due time or now, each and every one of you will stay straight. You know, girl for boy, boy for girl? Everything else is vice, as said by Doctor Kinsey. Not just for me, not for The Big Man Upstairs, not for your family, but do it for, uh, yourself, and for-and for the benefits of everyone in the future: your children, your children's children... And, besides, if you stray away from the straight path, it can really jeopardize the entire future of the world and the human race. Also, girls and ladies, don't just go over gaga, over the handsome rich boys... and men... because they may turn out to be disrespectful and distasteful in their personality. You should take into consideration all the other gentlemen that you may have considered, that may be less attractive, or equally-less or moderately. Because those will-because they will likely have a better personality that you will-that you will generally enjoy and like, and they may end up having a brighter future for themselves. Like, look at me now-I'm shootin' this movie for a DVD... that's gon-that I hope will be shown in a couple of schools, at least. Now, uh, also, uh... also, when you-when each and every one of you has a true general understanding of the, uh, opposite gender, and after that-finding that special MAN-LADIES!-or that special GIRL-GENTLEMEN!-always keep the... heart and memories of times that you two felt most attracted to each other, because that will be a key point to recovering from any disputes or arguments that you two might have in the future. Otherwise, so you two will just be darn happy with each other. But it's not all always gonna be peaches and cream or strawberry shortcakes. [Chris sighs] And also remember, you two should KEEP each other, because there will be nobody else-no matter how much you think about it-nobody else that can replace that special someone-him for her or... her for him-there's just nobody else...there's no substitute for that first one. And now, I leave you with the lessons that you should have-I hope you have learned from my message. You should all-you should stay in school, learn as you much. And try before you praise and despise. Never smoke! Never drink! Never worry about how others think of you when you do things... or... when you play with things that may not s-that may not seem like you-or whatever. Don't be afraid to approach those of your opposite gender. And MOST IMPORTANTLY! PLEASE... STAY STRAIGHT. I leave you with those words, as I have shared with you on this, my twenty-fifth birthday, February 24th, 2007. I am "Christopher" Christian Weston Chandler. Live long, and shine on, in your very own unique way. War is never the answer; peace is. Never fight. Compliments will get you fuzzy-wuzzies. War gets you prickly-wicklies... as well as punches. They get you those, too. Thank you very much, and have a wonderful day.

Something I noticed when I went through this moment was how out of my control Harry felt. Looking at his dialogue options, it all felt like nothing I would want to say. Which I don’t think is a coincidence considering that Volition, your skill that wants you to be a good person and offers the most control over Harry’s impulses, is the one hurt most deeply by the Ex-something. He begs you to hang up the phone, and he begs you to throw away the apricot chewing gum wrapper when you first discover it. The other skills seem curious or foreboding, but Volition is truly heartbroken.
I did my playthrough without seeing this lmao. I didn't want to be rude and keep calling, I think I stopped 2 away from _her_
The singular "hello" is bone-freezing. What also echoes within me still is the . . . . phasmid's "I exist" for the simplicity of this grandeur statement Very cool video!
I came here because my friend brought this up yesterday while we were hanging out and we got into a debate about it. I argued it couldn't be possible that Chris-Chan made the first Let's Play uploaded to the internet because logically there had to have been at least like hundreds of instances of people between the time the first video-sharing website was created (ShareYourWorld in 1997) and the time that Chris-Chan made their Let's Play of Animal Crossing (late 2003) who also filmed themselves playing a video game (that was commentary rather than a walkthrough) and then uploaded it to the internet. There couldn't have been that much of a wait before someone out there in the world wide web eventually uploaded a Let's Play predating Chris Chan. ShareYourWorld was, of course, shut down in 2001 due to bandwidth and budgeting issues and there are scant mentions of it online, so any true "first" uploaded Let's Play has likely been lost to time for decades. I told my friend that Chris-Chan is only considered the first because they just so happen to be one of the most documented people in human history, so of course any and all videos they've made are preserved, including a coincidental screen recording of Animal Crossing. First (preserved) Let's Play in terms of chronological upload date? Maybe. First Let's Play? Not likely. But I'm gonna use that fun Christory fact anyway to freak out people in the future, as my friend did with me. In her words: "You're just in denial Chris-Chan invented the Let's Play."
my moment, my first one, was the scene of harry and kim on the swingset, waiting for the ice to melt. im not sure what it was about it, but in the moment i knew this game would be special. my second one was the phasmid. its what broke me. i cried at 3 am over a bug and thats when i went "i already loved this game, now it might be one of my favourites"
I love that you can just say "I am the LAW" to her, which has just been this funny refrain you can fall back to at this point. But seeing it come back here is weird, like knowing its an absurd defense mechanism for his life
nonsensical title, people recorded video games since the 80's
Mine was right away, as soon as the game started. Not hyperbole, I put all my points into mental stats so I would intentionally have a frail and unhealthy physical character that had to solve every problem with wits and a sharp tongue. First thing I do when I gain control of Harry, is reach up and try and get the tie off the ceiling fan. I hurt myself, have a heart attack, and die right there and then. I was giggling for a full five minutes while I remade my character and started all over again, making sure to save this time lol.
Have I been pronouncing happenstance my whole life, or have you? I actually just called it a night on this game after that scene, but I cracked open a bottle and then shut it down after being sober the whole playable game. I didn't save, but for tonight, that is how it ended for me.
The love quest is over, congratulations!
The phonecall reminded me of a Danish arthouse film called Submarino that I watched on a date. It haunts me to this day because of how relatable this movie felt to my own life. In the beginning, the protagonist, a depressed alcoholic, has a phonecall similair to Harry's and punches the payphone. He injures his hand doing this. Throughout the movie, the injury gets worse and worse untill he collapses from septic shock and wakes up in a hospital bed with his hand amputated in the end. I highly recommend it, but be warned, its not a feel good film.
The note from her in the clipboard absolutely broke me the first time I got it.
I remember slowly realizing this was important when he slowly input the very long phone number, and realized what this meant when the person on the phone knew Harry's name, and once the call was ended, I didn't call back. I was like "Come on Harry, the past is gone. Let it go so it won't hurt you anymore." I genuinely felt awful for the man and couldn't bring myself to put him through that conversation again.
Same here. This moment in the game changed the whole perspective for me. In my first playthrough I missed it. I didn't pass the check and then forgot about it. I came back to the phone last year. When Dora hung up I was as devastated as Harry. Hunching. Crumbled. In a deep mental pain. Because let's be honest, we all had broken hearts in our lives. I had to quit playing for a while. And then I decided to fix Harry. I replayed the game again. Quit drinking and doing drugs completely. Quit being Superstar Cop, became a Sorry Cop and never f*cking regretted it.
I think for me it was the "ghost" In the doomed commercial area's calling machine. It sent real shivers down my spine, and made me wonder if the world is really as straightforward as i though.
For me was when you try to do a hit and run with the Middle finger after you fail that check
been to years but i just finished the game so whatever. To me, this scene was made infinitely better with kim. When you try to call his name but only a whimper comes out really set the scene for me, even made me tear up.
there is a payphone attached to the building directly beside whirling in rags. That's where i encountered this exchange
HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T KNOW... WOW THIS IS GIVING ME CHILLS
I'm a simple man: he walks out of a completely mess of a room, half naked and with hungover, sees a girl, says "I want to have fuck with you" and then I'm totally sold.
For me, it was the moment when you met the phasmid,i was too caught up with the investigation and when i completed the check and i saw it,I got so derailed because of my childlike curiosity, and it was beautiful.
The moment that's still stuck to me was standing in the rain, right in front of the nearly abandoned Doomed Commercial Building, listening to a ghost on the call box say "It felt so nice to finally forget about you..." I finished the game this past week as of writing. I couldn't help but shed a tear as it said that. I miss my best friend...
No one mentions failed karaoke and that’s a crime I never laughed so hard while feeling so sad
I will always remember the moment that I told the pawn shop guy that I should've shot myself. The reaction where he didn't know how to react sticks in my brain.
For me it was Harry's singing performance oh boy how beatiful that was
When I tried to hang up the phone and the game was like "Lol nope", that was my first oh fuck moment in the game
For me it was talking to Measurehead the fact that they took the time to explore what kinds of racism would exist in this world and made it just as inchorent as real world racism and the fact I had zero context going in was too funny and they did this all for a joke character.
I had so many moments like this: - Winning the pinball machine with Kim - Meeting Kim for the first time - Seeing Kim protect Harry and everyone else in what is (unquestionably) the most loyal and badass moment he has, he definitely followed through on that esprit de corp check... - Talking to Kim on the balcony - The kineema, OH GOD THE KINEEMA! - talking to Kim about his (not crashed) Kineema.. - Backing Kim up when the racist guy used his vocal chords - The ending, my god the ending! - The insect - The Mega Rich Light Bending Guy - Kim commenting when I took the boots and completed the set - just Kim being an absolute chad - Sad FM is such an incredible moment Sadly I completely forgot about the karaoke as I was having such a blast, but I'll 100% do it every other playthrough
This game is the trump card any gamer can pull out when having a pointless argument with movie or book snobs that claim video games can't match theyr version of the art that is story telling. It's a pointles argument because in mine and I'm sure many of yours opinions - video games are superior in their story telling especially due to the unique ability to interact and influence their narratives. And not only do WE know this...but deep down, even the aforementioned snobs know this to be true. Anyway my point is, this video game is the beez kneez. And I know I praised the story a bunch but I'd also like to mention that I love this type of overall gameplay and infact, this is the only video game with this camera type that I can put in my "BESTEESSSSTEST VIDEO GAMES EVER MADE!" Hat. The other one is the original Diablo when I played it on PS1. There is of course Dota style games I loved playing with similar type camera. As well as RTS games like Red Alert and Warcraft, oh and ofcourse Final Fantasy Tactics 'War of the Lions' ( which I forgot to mention is not an rts, it's considered like a JRPG maybe? It's turned based, grid tactics game of the absolute peak quality, chefs kiss absolutely no notes brilliance of a game :) go play it asap as heck!); But I can't count those because they are in entirely different genres.
Heh, happenchance.
Ngl as someone who already likes Disco Elysium the biggest takeaway from this video is that apparently *happenchance* is a word. Fully got whiplash when the initial happen- didn't end with -stance.
The moment that sold me is being about to shoot Cunoette
Its not Dora saying hello for me, its Harry changing his entire posture just hearing her voice. Heartbreaking.
This video touches on something that I have slowly learned, time and time again: If there's something in Disco Elysium, it was meant to be there. Now obviously that sounds right, of course the developers intended to put something in there, but what I mean is that every single time the game says there's something to do--*they want you to do it.* You said "I could have easily left after making the prank phone calls" and that's exactly what I did!! I thought it was just a funny little money sink, but as I've seen more and more of other people's play throughs, I realize that basically no such thing exists. There was a reason, and I missed out on not pushing forward. I feel this is genuinely exemplified in the fact that in the final moments of the game; I didn't rest in the bed in the fort. I thought to myself "The day is young, we're right here, we don't want this guy to get away!" and so I kept up through the entire day... and later realized that I missed perhaps one of the most important moments Harry can have, finally confronting his entire perspective of deifying his former lover, and the guilt, the regret, the anger that his past wells up inside of him. That, luckily, I could go back and see by reloading a save--but this small moment, of *genuine* confrontation, speaking with her, is lost to my Harry. (Well, until the next time I play, of course) Also, great video! I appreciate the short length of it, the succinctness, you have a good grasp on these things.
I played DE back when it came out and sadly I wasn't pulled into it at the time. I had heard about how great it was but my mental was different back then. Come to the end of this year, I gave it a go again. I always knew that I would, this time with the voice narration, the moment that resounded to me the most was the description of death in the beginning. "Nothing baby" "There is nothing. Only warm, primordial blackness. Your conscience ferments in it -- no larger than a single grain of malt." For some reason the writing resounded with me, this time I wanted to "feel". I played the game straight for days. It is now my favorite game of all time.
Good video. DE sold me almost immediately, once I got adjusted to the over-the-top VAing of the reptilian brain and limbic system. I love how the game characterizes Harry by forcing you to play out as a total failure at first, to (IMO) great comedic effect. Btw it's hapenstance, not hapenchance.
Yesterday I cried for my ex-gf after finding and reading the letter in the blue heart clip. This is not my first run. She left months ago, I hadnt cry before...
My defining moment was with the Deserter at the end in the fort. To me, he symbolizes everything. You, Kim, the union, the moralintern, Revachol. He was everything, he was the most important piece of the puzzle. He also has an Amazing voice too
Two years too late to comment, but I missed both the Dream and the phonecall. The latter because I was in the zone. I almost met Ruby and felt like I needed to move it - as a character not as a player, - so I left the phonebooth after a few prank calls. The former I missed because Harry metaphorically forced his shit together for this final stretch. So, I guess my Harry actually did move on throughout the course of the game - and funnily enough, I started the run with, like, 1 in Volition and by the end it was one of my highest stats, so it fits.
You mean "Happenstance" --- "Happen-chance" isn't a real word
… it’s a real word, the words are synonymous www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/happenchance
Detective. Arriving. On the scene.
“You want MONEY?? Huh??” He wasn’t talking to the phone. Communism killed him
I LOVE that this game makes you feel like a genuine detective. No detail is insignificant. No amount of sleuthing and questioning is unrewarded. But perhaps the moment that really made me fall in love with this game is investigating Harry's clipboard. Digging through your files, finding out who you were, what your name is, what kind of cop you were and how far you have fallen, and perhaps most importantly, what is in the envelope. When Harry opens the envelope and is so overwhelmed by his emotions, by his unwillingness to face what haunts him the most, the screen goes black. Its just powerful. And as a man who has dealt with the pain of divorce, it resonated with me on a level like nothing else. Those who know, know that feeling of remorse. That black pit of despair that threatens to swallow you. What a genuinely awful and difficult thing it is to bring yourself back from that pit. To start over. I had never felt more understood by anything or anyone. What a truly special game.
The moment that stuck with me was the firing squad wall reconstruction bit.
When just opening this video, I knew it's going to be the payphone, and I watched it anyway.
Another interesting detail is that if you succeed an impossible volition check, you can actually back out of the call after dialing it and receive a surge of health and morale, as a wave of relief washes over Harry.
Weird Paul did it before chris-chan
For me it was when I failed the skill check and ran and middle fingered the garte and jumped into Lena.
