Sounder Golf
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 มี.ค. 2020
Sounder is the brainchild of Cathal McAteer and James Day.
Cathal founded the award-winning fashion brand Folk. As a proud Scot, an acclaimed creative director and a self-confessed golf nut, he has created a range for Sounder that is stylish, functional and hard-wearing - both on and off the course.
James founded Urban Golf, the UK's first and best indoor golf venue. As a player, teacher, clubmaker and entrepreneur, he's spent his entire career fighting for a version of the game that's more accessible, more rewarding and more fun.
Sounder is the result of Cathal and James' shared passion for the game. All Sounder products have been conceived, designed and tested on the course by us, and only the products that we believe in have made the cut.
We know that there are many people out there who share our love for golf as a game - and also our frustration with golf as an industry. We hope that you'll find Sounder a brand for people like you.

The Play Lite Gilet
It seems that you lot just can’t get enough of our gilets.
Our classic Low Light Gilet was a bestseller from day one, so we added a new version for 2021 - the same stylish cut, but a new eco-cambric water-repellent fabric from British Millerain. Then along came our Himalayas series - gilets and jackets made from an Italian polar fleece, with deep pockets and front and back and a rugged styling that’s perfect for any activity in the great outdoors.
Now we’re pleased to introduce the Play Lite series - a quilted jacket available in both a gilet and short-sleeved version. Both are made from a lightweight nylon with polyester lining and filler, which translates to packing up small without compromising on cosiness. We’ve replaced the zip with snap button fastening, added elasticated front pockets with an embroidered Sounder star, and a handy inside pocket for your scorecard and pencil.
We know you’ll love the Play Lite just as much as you loved the Low Light series, so don’t hang around - this is a limited-edition piece that’s sure to sell out.

The newest addition to our polo range is named for the Monterey Peninsula, where the mighty Pacific Ocean meets the California coast. It's home to some of the world's most exclusive golf courses (Cypress Point, Pebble Beach and MPCC), but also to easily accessible public golf gems like Pacific Grove and Poppy Hills. Tiger Woods 9 shots done on an indoor simulator
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
When Tiger Woods was playing his best golf he used to have 9 shots he could play - so we thought we should give them a go on our indoor simulators. The shots he wanted to have in his arsenal were the straight stock shot, a fade, a draw, and then all 3 of them in a high version and a low version. We headed indoors to Urban Golf where they use About Golf simulators, the most accurate and realisti...
The truth about the progress of the modern driver
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
We saw a video from MyGolfSpy showing a driver from 1999 up against a Titleist 2023 model which was particularly misleading and spurred us into action. Firstly, MyGolfSpy hadn't built the drivers to allow it to be a fair test, but more importantly the conclusion of the test was a red herring. Most people watching the MyGolfSpy video would have walked away assuming modern equipment provides heap...
The Haar Jacket
มุมมอง 2452 ปีที่แล้ว
As James explains, the 'Haar' name and inspiration for this product came to us on a dreich day in Machrihanish. It's a fave of many of the Sounder staff, and we've been shifting heaps of them since the product first dropped. Made from a lightweight soft-shell nylon, this mesh-lined overhead jacket packs up small enough to squeeze into a pocket, even on your single-strap Sunday bag. A concealed ...
Good Walk Trousers
มุมมอง 3422 ปีที่แล้ว
Our Good Walk Trousers are available in a range of colours, fits, styles, and materials. Whether you are going for 100% cotton, ripstop, linen, button up, drawstring, black or olive, there's a style for everyone. Over the years we've found it difficult to a decent trouser we can wear for golf, which is what led us to design the Good Walk Trouser as one of the first ever Sounder products. It's a...
Stripe T-Shirt
มุมมอง 2072 ปีที่แล้ว
You can't always put on a stripe show on the course. But slip into this classic striped crewneck tee after your round and you're sure to be dialled in when you get to the bar. It's made in Portugal by the guys who make our bestselling Play Well polo. They really know that they are doing with the very best 100% organic cotton, which is soft, hard-wearing and fits just right. It's stripier than a...
You should bag a 5-wood: things to think about
มุมมอง 1.8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The humble 5-wood has come back into fashion, no longer resigned to the old boys at your club or the slightly oddball 12 handicapper that keeps winning the Wednesday medal. Allowing you to hit the higher shot that doesn't roll out too much, while also performing out of the rough, the 5-wood could be an important weapon in your arsenal, but you need to get them built correctly. Getting the right...
Persimmon vs modern driver test - done properly
มุมมอง 4.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Our persimmon driver vs modern driver test is done properly, meaning we actually build the clubs so they have a fair chance. Other people have done the old vs new driver test before but you'll notice they don't spec up the clubs so it's not a fair fight - you'll also notice you rarely see them hit a bad shot, which is a bit dubious, and pretty average swings manage to get 170 ball speeds on the...
The best club rack in golf
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Sounder co-founder James Day is an equipment junkie, and he's in a bad way. Just take a look at his club rack at Urban Golf, the indoor golf business he founded back in 2004, and you get an idea of the trouble he's in. In this video, James riffles through the rack picking some of his favourite bats, giving some background on them and generally waxing lyrical in a way only true equipment heads c...
The New Sounder Golf Ball
มุมมอง 6582 ปีที่แล้ว
The original Sounder golf ball was a key part of our vision for the company - to create a more honest and authentic golf brand for people who love the golf the game, not golf the industry. We wanted to cut through the marketing hype and tour player endorsements that contribute to premium balls that cost £50 a dozen. We created a soft three-piece ball that felt great around the greens without gi...

ZZZZZZZ
Love the honest chat including self appraisal. The skill in creating your own makes us all envious
One of the best golf videos ever. Will make a pilgrimage to play all of these courses.
This is exactly what I found comparing a modern Ben Hogan driver to and older persimmon (Louisville Golf TWPD) with a True Temper shaft. 7 mph difference in swing speed and 20 yard difference in ball flight. I've got several Powerbilt Persimmons that I want to try as well. I think the timing is different between the old shaft and the new stiffer shafts. The older Tru Tempers feel more whippy and there's a sense that the shaft flexes as soon as you hit the ball, while the new shafts don't seem to give one bit.
beautiful x
Love this! Nice to see somone making it more of a fair test. Have you hit the modern made persimmon woods? I've just got my hands on a Persimmon T Classic with a 260cc head I think. A wooden mini driver if you will. 9° lift I think. It has a steel shaft which is enjoyable but I think less optimal. Tried to get a wood but it looks like the company may have stopped operating.
Nice test. Sounds about right. Around 20 yards or so in 30 years tech in the club alone.
really demonstrates how much better the golfers were before modern novelty clubs reduced the golf swing to a 'ball speed' rather than a solid hit on the screws. i imagine if the top pros of today were forced to play with traditional equipment, we would see how truly average they are...and how many low handicap players are just as good as they are. the difference is that professional golf is little more than long drive contests.
Those old Wooden woods and forge blade irons are the absolute best teachers. When you miss em your entire body knows it😂
I invite you to look at Moe Norman’s iron set that is online. They are worn out in the shape of a ball right in the middle of the blade. Moe used to practice all of the time. Do you know what is missing today? Practice! People today expect their clubs to do it all. This is ridiculously obvious on the greens. I don’t care if you spent 1k for a putter. If you can’t hit it properly you are going to miss. It is getting comical at this point because everyone is being played by a bunch of marketing.
@hillbilly4christ638 I agree, even though most of us don't golf for a living, the amount of "my practice consists of just playing a round on Sunday with the boys" is appalling. If you can't even get off the tee box, the course is not where you should be.
Watched a current tour pro on a vid getting 1.48 smash with a persimmon…..but his club head speed was slower. so they go as far if you can swing them just as fast and hit the middle…..but we can’t. So his results were the same as you. About 10 yards less.
TH-cam keeps reffering my to your old videos. Don't get wrong because they are great and bear a rewatch. But are you doing new material?
I swear to god the sweet spot of a persimmons driver is the greatest sound in the world
I think your dog might be retarded. Great video though!
Lololol...Hogan yelling "whiff" in the middle of your swing absolutely made my day!!! Give him a treat...he just earned a sub!!!
Lots of 'minimalist' ethos in this vid. "BogeyGolf" pure pleasure 👍
Do you have these in stock? Planning a golf trip to NC500 in May and might be useful :)
I came across this video actually bc I just purchased a used sonartec 5 wood. I feel it’s a great addition to the bag since I already have/ use a titleist 906f2 3 wood, which is an absolute weapon. Saw the sonartec sole somewhere online and vaguely remembered it though never used it. I thought when I saw it like a week ago man, that is a serious looking fairway wood. Come to find out many tour pros used it- I had no idea. So now I’ll have a pretty awesome throwback set : 905s driver, 906f2 3 wood, sonartec 5 wood, Mizuno mp-29 3-pw, Cleveland 900 raw sw, a tm rac tour lw, a terrillium Newport 2 ! Love this set ❤ping hoofer vintage bag
Played hickory here shorly after it was opened, mesmerising place.
that sounds ideal!
@soundergolf They had hoped to run a promotional hickory tournament but couldn't fill a plane load from Stateside. Pity, I would have liked that.
Brilliant, I've played many of the courses and camped my way around as well. And you don't need state of the art gear...did I spot a nice block of furniture at 3.33 ? Love it.
Thanks James, this is superb! I want to game older equipment but how would anyone find the best fit if they don’t have all the tools. Feeling corner by the market right now where you can’t even get fit for 22 models anymore
Great video 👏 bringing back great memories
I still have my 983K, loved the sound off this when middled, like a rifle crack, didn't MGS suggest!!!!!! only a few months ago that Chrome soft still had issues?
Really nice test guys, good job! Loved the video
You havent got a R H set of McGregor MC 700's by any chance
Can you do a coach session on these? Those are incredible with one take
My gamer is a 983k, hit miles more fairways with it than any 460 head I've tried, 150-153 ball speed bit of a drop off on mishits but who wants high ball speeds when you've hit it towards the trees. Just picked up a 983E which needs regripping and I'll try that out next week.
nice! let us know how you get on.
@@soundergolf so the 983E is now my gamer, 157mph according to the same range top tracer 🙃 how accurate the data is I have no idea, better flight than 983K and have never hit so many fairways/green light drives the last few rounds in my life
loved the vid keep it up
Thanks!
Brilliant vid as per. Really good craic. I use a TM 300 mini. Im not good, but looking down on a wardrobe sized thing is scary to me. I do hit some bad drives, but when it goes, it makes me happy.
Play what makes you love the game. People often ignore the effect the club has on you. Huge driver heads actually make us worse players over time
Good test and explanation James. Unfortunately you already know that the masses will follow the marketing nonsense like sheep. Persimmon all day everyday James
I love playing persimmon too. I just think the modern attitude to equipment misses the point. People are being told they should play clubs based on numbers which misses out the look, the feel, what will actually make you better and most importantly the pleasure of hitting shots. It’s as if those things don’t count.
@@jamesday4842 I couldn't agree more James. It's a multi-billion dollar industry these days so the ethical and moral codes go out the window unfortunately. I will stick with my persimmon and continue to enjoy the game and play how I was taught as a young lad.
Nice test. I got fit for a Nickent around 2001 and hit it pretty well and far at 8 degrees. The next driver I got was a Mizuno ST180 at 9.5. Not a huge difference I've noticed, just slightly more forgiving. I think maybe if I had more swing speed I would notice more forgiveness in my Mizuno.
are you still playing it now?
I'm still using a 910 and a 906f2 with an Accra SE80 m4 and if something happened to that then I think I'd be looking round charity shops to find another. I know I'm old school but I really don't want any of these new clubs. I'm bringing out the 905r with the SC65 M4 for the winter just so I can keep the 910 for atlwast another summer.
All great drivers and that era of Accra shafts were the best. I think you might get back into the 905r
A few years ago I purchased from you an M2 with an Accra shaft... I've just gone down to my basement and brought up a King Cobra Ti from around 97/98. Going to try it this weekend.
I'm in the process of buying a King Cobra 440 SZ second hand one
I have come by one of these Haar windcheaters recently in Silver, with one previous owner. Love the roomy fit. Fits in the single pocket of my walker bag no problem.
The best silhouette / cut of trousers I have ever owned...on or off the course. So, so comfortable.
Fantastic colours. How does a club distinguish between a 'no collar' shirt (as worn by Tiger Woods) and a 'T-shirt' anyway? Would be interested to know.
Love this James. Good honest efforts as well. I guess the key thing is the right shaft for you is the most important thing? Thats reflected in how many shaft options / variations there are where are you might get 2/3 head options from manufacturers these days? Would you do a similar text with modern irons versus older ones? I feel technology has potentially moved on more here for the regular amateur player?
Absolutely stunning wee vid. I dont like phrases like "speaks to me" or "I identify with this" but my word, my own golfing ethos articulated beautifully by someone else gets me feeling all furry and happy inside. Thank you Sounder Lads x
Technology has made a huge difference in the game of golf. I’m a retired Tour player (45 yrs old) who only plays 2-3 times a year now, and I hit the ball further now than when I was 20yrs old playing state lvl golf. Drivers do go further due to their forgiveness and lower spin rates, the irons are almost 2 clubs longer than they were in the 1990’s too, but the biggest factor for the extra distance are the balls. I’ve got loads of balls from the late 90’s and 2000’s and I can tell you they go WAY shorter than they do now, it’s almost criminal how long the new balls are 😂 … and they go MUCH straighter, too.
yep - and i think the game is poorer for it!
Actually I own set of Sounder irons from decades ago. Good looking clubs but there are much easier irons you can own and play.
I've been enjoying a steel shafted 7 wood recently in the bag. Alongside the 16* 3 wood you made me (which is awesome). I'm finding the 7 wood easy to make go high or low. Quite fun to chomp down on off the tee on a tight hole too, or when confidence is low. Feels like a similar function for me what you are describing here in these 5 woods. Good stuff.
love of sound of what you're doing with that 7-wood! enjoy
I mean I know it´s just a commercial and for that it´s well made and sends out a positive message. But is there any other sport with the exception of racing where there is so much equipment snobbery and attempts to gain even the most minimal advantage possible than Golf?
Hi Boris - we totally agree (although, we refrain from calling it a sport - rather a game) - we stand for the complete opposite of what you suggest we are trying to imply - listen to the voiceover again :)
@@soundergolf Oh I know. Its nice :) And quite refreshing.
Inherited a set of 80s persimmon woods from my grandpa and they play fantastic not to mention how gorgeous they look
Very enjoyable watch. Got an old hogan speed slot Percy I’ll get out again and have a bash with
Well made video/test. What golf ball do you recommend for persimmon? I usually use Pro V1 but as you say, can feel a bit hard. Is the Sounder ball suitable for persimmon? I only have a dozen "Spalding Tour Editions" left. P.S I play at RND with Fordy senior every week.
Wilson staff Zip. They are the softest ball i have ever hit including Tour 90 and Tour 100 Balata. You will sacrifice spin though on iron and wedge shots. Another couple are the Duo Soft and Callaway SuperSoft. They will spin more than the Zip.
lol the dogs having a blast scratching himself on the mat
At 16:13, Hogan looks witheringly straight down the camera lens, as if to say "Are you still rolling? He ain't ever getting 155 ball speed out of this Maxfli today".
Hogan was in a VERY odd mood this day.
He’s losing it. However his judgement is still good. Was very agitated by the Maverick
Hi James, What's your thoughts on Tom Wishon Clubs and fitting?
“ A ball for amateur golfers, that plays how you hit it “ I’d love to see a ball that doesn’t have all the usual claims of longer, straighter, more spin blah blah blah…. How about some cool lines and suck like the Srixon divide or the Taylor Made stripe ball. Always sold out here in the USA. Maybe purest golfers don’t like this stuff but they always play Pro V1’s anyways. But the new age amateurs of the world prefer something just a bit different and neat with cool alignment aides. Just a thought. Can’t wait to try yours out.
Fantastic video guys !! Keep at please ! Hopefully your videos find the Algorithms on TH-cam
Thanks Cam - fingers crossed :)
Loving the content guys!
Thanks Sam 🙏
