Zawadi za Afrika (Gifts of Africa)
Swahili is the most common language spoken in Africa after Arabic and French. It is an official language of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Many people also speak it in Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Zambia, and other countries in Africa.
Elie Muhanano grew up speaking Swahili in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Music became Elie's passion. He later moved to Rwanda and began teaching music to children. Elie said, "I love children so much, for me they are joy makers!" Elie composed this song in Swahili and English and recorded it at a studio in Rwanda.
Enjoy this music video with scenes of African animals, plants, and geography.
This song is featured in the "Our Great Big World" curriculum available from Notgrass History. This curriculum is designed for homeschooled students in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. Lessons guide your child across all seven continents, highlighting God's natural wonders and amazing creatures, fascinating people God created to do fascinating things, and beautiful landmarks people have built. With open-and-go lessons, you can teach your student with minimal planning or preparation.

Appreciated the succinct overview. Nicely done. While it's your right to proclaim your Christian beliefs, it made your reporting biased and suspect. Also, when you said Chicago protestors "provoked" the police, the reality is that the police were locked and loaded and ready for combat per Mayor Daley. Rubin and Hoffman didn't help with comments that they were there to urinate, defecate and fornicate in the streets.

Hi Liya! The "America the Beautiful" curriculum includes two textbooks. Part 1 has 75 lessons beginning with life in America before Europeans came and continuing through the first years after the Civil War. Part 2 also has 75 lessons beginning with the late 1800s and continuing to the present. So there are a total of 150 lessons in both texts.

I've been reading these books to my daughter. I'm a working class musician in farm laborer with a very humble life, a single dad. We have been captivated by these books. I dream deep in my heart of building a little cabin for us on some land. Last night we read the first few chapters of "By The Shores Of Silver Lake". I won't spoil it for you, but I can say that by the end of chapter 2 both of us were weeping

I related the challenges her family faced with my family difficulties in Brazil, her parents were as dedicated and wise as mine and her words helped me and supported me during my childhood. They were my favorite (and most of the times my only) Christmas gift. The power of literature!

Will students learn the geography of the U.S., state capitols, etc., through the Map Study book or will they be expected to know them already before going into America the Beautiful?

    • @notgrasshistory

Hi, Melissa! "America the Beautiful" introduces students to various aspects of U.S. geography--mountain ranges, major rivers, national parks, and more. It does not specifically teach state capitals, and students do not have to know them to complete the course. We do cover state capitals in our elementary geography course, "Our 50 States".

I remember reading the entire series as a 10 year old to 11 year old little girl. I would read a chapter a night to my three younger brothers before bed. We were always excited to read and hear the next chapter! We would always read two chapters during any holiday time off from school, as we didn't have to be in bed as early. It turned me into an avid reader and story teller! It also made three young busy boys better listeners, lol! I read these same books to my own 7 children and every time I read it, it floods me back to my youth. I now have 6 grandchildren that I wish I could continue the tradition, but they live 5 hours away. I have decided next year, when my oldest granddaughter turns 10, I will give her, her own set of Laura Ingalls Wilder books to read and hopefully cherish as I did!

I am from Denmark - and I grew up with the little house books. I believe the first LHBW was translated and published in Denmark 1957, when my Godmother gave it to me for Christmas. I was 7 years old. A new little house book was published each year for Christmas since then. I was fascinated from the start. Farmer boy puzzled me a bit. Where did this boy with the funny name come from? But I realized he must have something to do with the names of the author - Ingalls Wilder - though when the book was published in Dk. noone knew yet - that he was to be the husband of little Laura Ingalls. Anyway - it's fascinating to see the original home, I've read about so many times. I would love to go see it - but I live too far away. I was wondering - what about all the secondary caracters in FB . are they fictional or real? A lot of efforts has been done to verify the side-characters of the "real" little house books. I haven't seen this done with FB. Were these real persons: mr Corse Bill Ritchie and his father French Joe Lazy John and their sons. The shoemaker, mr Brown mr Paddock - the carriage maker Mr Thompson, who lost his wallet.

I've read that Mrs. Wilder used people's real names, unless they were unpleasant people, so most of the people in _Farmer Boy_ were probably written as Mr. Wilder related the information to Mrs. Wilder. For example, Nellie Olsen in the books was really named Nellie Owens, and was written as a composite of three unpleasant girls that Laura knew over the years: Nellie Owens, Genevieve Masters, and Estella Gilbert.
