    Hi Intercultural English, I just finished your Cultural Dimensions playlist, really enjoyed it. They were informative and really helped me hone in on some ideas I've been prodding at for months. I've been noticing and doing some research on some of these things myself for a while but building up the information is a little scattered and takes time. While I'm a native English speaker, I would love to travel some day, so it'd be interesting information to have at the back of my mind. Right now though, I mostly went through these videos examining my close relationships. Namely my father and my ex lol. With my ex it was useful for describing some of our fault lines we'd come across; while we're both flexible, open-minded people willing to work together, there were definitely some differences in values and processing information we could not bridge. With my father, while we are obviously related (and of the same nationality--it's not a question of immigrant generational dynamics) and share a lot of experiences, we clash sometimes where neither means to do harm but I think we both believe we're right lol, and meet at an impasse. It seems to come down to a difference of values. Which isn't uncommon at all between parent and child, but I found myself thinking of the cultural dimensions because we come from different upbringings + cultural and economic backgrounds. (I am mixed race, American)

    In conclusion, both individualism and collectivism have their advantages and drawbacks, and the ideal balance between the two dimensions can vary depending on cultural, societal, and individual preferences. It's also worth noting that many societies exhibit a mix of both dimensions, and cultural norms can change over time. Understanding these dimensions can help individuals and societies navigate the complex interplay between personal freedom and communal well-being.

    I'm really struggling mentally with not belonging to a homogenous culture i live in the UK and I'm really struggling to cope with living in such a rampantly diverse place, I feel isolated and on the bad days horribly invaded, I don't look down on people from elsewhere at all, I just feel alone and isolated and obsolete, I feel like predominantly black cultures like those of the carribean and former African colonies are dominating through artifical media coverage and it feels strange and uncomfortable, I don't know where to go to talk about this, I don't know where to go to get help dealing with these feelings, I'm only ever consistently called a racist and berated and mocked over and over for simply feeling lost and alone and it further entrenches this developing sense of xenophobia that's began in response in my subconscious, the absolute irony being that of the few people who have sat down and related to and listened to what I'm experiencing have all been black, that's how I know it can't be a racial thing, there's some underlying human instinct that's being aggravated or upset somehow and I don't know how to soothe or resolve it

    • @interculturalenglish9794
      @interculturalenglish9794 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really qualified to offer you any advice but I know that you aren't alone in how you feel. People mock things that they don't understand and anything that can burst their own little bubbles of reality. You might consider reading about history, and find out why things are the way that they are now. But I would suggest reading classic books from the last century to avoid modern political biases. Personally, I have come to the conclusion that the word is on the cusp of some very big changes that will especially affect Western countries. This is making everybody anxious but very few people can understand why. This is just my opinion for what it's worth. “I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Sure, men and women have some differences like men being stronger and women having the ability to nurse, so there is some truth to one being protector and the other being nurturer. However, they should not be taken to extremes as individuals would be left incomplete internally.

    As a collectivist you may have no idea what i being talked about by denigrating individualists as selfish and believe only in the ME. It is having the right to be informed when a loved one has been killed on a Malaysian Airliner. Even though it may embarrass the government or airline company. As a collectivist you have no right for your gov't to inform you that the pilot may have been trying to negotiate with the gov't for the release of a prisoner. Your loved one is dead and there is no consequence or responsibility to the group.

      both individualism and collectivism has it's own advantages and flaws but, individualism sees every person equally and evaluate them rationally, but in collectivism more important members gets the higher priority and righ to take decisions. goverment decides for us, so, democratic country should have individualism culture rather than collectivism, I can see your point there.

    I have heard the United States is considered a Universalistic vs a Particularistic nation. I would disagree. If a person is wealthy or a politician, (friends in high places) the rules/laws are applied in a particularistic manner, much in the way of a socialist or communist society. Without friends in high places, the common man faces a universalistic destiny, in the manner of our republic/democratic society. Because of this, our nation is losing it's direction.......

    • @interculturalenglish9794

      You could well be correct. Since making this series of videos I have noticed many paradoxes contained within these models. For example, the US is considered highly individualistic, yet many Americans act uniformly when it comes to what they watch on TV, how they dress, the cars they drive and the houses they live in. There might well be a hundred varieties of chips to choose from - but everybody is still eating chips!
