how to *finish* a first draft! | writing advice from a bestselling author📔👩🏽‍💻
📖✨welcome back to my channel! ✨📖 #author #authortube #booktok #ditl #Londonlife #bookish #bookworm #authortuber
hi! I'm Esmie, author of the Sunday Times Bestselling space fantasy book THE PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS, which is best described as Treasure Planet meets Atlantis with a lot more romance ;)
*I am rooting for you - remember why you started this draft in the first place.*
In this video, I break down some methods that have helped me *finally finish a first draft*. I wanted to break down the video into *mindset tips*, and *practical tips* for finishing the first draft of your novel, because I genuinely think mindset is 80% of the battle.
*mindset:* remember why you started, stop letting other people's opinions dictate YOUR creativity!! Your dreams are on the other side of the end.
*practical:* What are your characters *ultimate, end goals*? what does the scene look like where they finally achieve their goals? Give yourself something to write towards!! Raise the stakes, and if you need to, sprinkle in some tragedy to make the writing really fun... *author discretion is advised!*
00:00 - intro
01:45 - the mindset tips.
03:06 - *your dreams are on the other side of the end*
05:14 - the practical tips.

    I’m jealous. Not that you finished it, but that you finished it at only 125,000 words. My fourth, book1 in an epic fantasy, needed itself to be 240,000 words, and for a non-traditional published author, and with the limit to the word count for these kind of books at 130,000, when approaching agents … what an uphill battle it is.

    Now I get why I never finish my first drafts it's because I am a poet so I tend to seek perfection in every word I write. I've been willing to write my first novel for a while but I only reached 3000 words and got bored and decided to focus on poetry. I even procrastinate publishing my poetry thinking it isn't perfect🤦‍♀️😭... I only publish in 1 by 1 in a literary journal or contest just to see if my work is worth publishing.

    I needed this SOOOOO badly. Particularly the checking the one star reviews of your favorite book part. So great! I've written several novels but really just for me. Something to do with an idle brain. But recently I met a friend whose mother is an editor for a quite well known author and she wanted to read what I'm working on now. I was elated that a professional editor for a major publishing house care enough to want to read it. When she did read it, she was REALLY complimentary and told me I was crazy if I didn't get serious about it and since then, I have been frozen for fear that I'm destined to disappoint. This was perfect. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

      @esmietheauthor 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment :) Hi from London to Chile!!! I think it's a combination of things. Usually I read the whole thing through, and note down where I get bored, or the dialogue feels awkward. I read sections aloud to see if they flow well, and have good rhythm. I think about my characters - who were they are the beginning of the novel? What lessons have they learned, and how have they developed? Have the changed in any way? Recently I was thinking about a character and I realised she didn't change from the beginning of the novel to the end... so her character felt boring to read - her reactions became predictable and therefore a bit annoying. It's also important to take a break from it, so you can read it with fresh eyes! I hope this helps!! thank you for watching😊
