Description

The excavation of 30 day old flowable fill is shown. Flowable fill should have a compressive strength between 20 and 80 psi (150 to 600 kPa) so that it can be easily excavated for repairs, future installations, etc.

The ill-advised method of mounding used to install pipe is shown. The pipe is supported on each end on a mound of soil. This is done to place the pipe at a certain elevation. Since it is practically impossible to compact beneath the pipe, a loose zone between the mounds results. The mounds may end up as hard spots creating point loading on the pipe. Illustrates the procedure in ASTM D 6103 " Flow Consistency of CLSM." A 3-inch by 6-inch cylinder is filled with flowable fill and raised. The mixture consistency should result in an 8- inch to 12- inch diameter patty.

Demonstrates how the angle of repose of crushed rock creates a void in a pipe haunch when the rock is dumped in beside the pipe.
