    Hail Mary is brilliant, but I would highly recommend pairing it with the audiobook. It's kind of necessary in a way. The narrator is marvelous!

      Oh, how interesting. I will give the audiobook a try. Recently I have really enjoyed paring up listening and reading. I have just finished The Bell Jar narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal and dare I say the audiobook is better than reading a paperback. I will talk about it a bit in my next episode :)

    Although I love The Thursday Murder Club series, it seems that we share a similar taste in your other "dislikes". I DNF Bel Canto (and I love Ann Patchett), I also abandoned a Gentleman in Moscow and I just couldn't get into Tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow. Hi Paulina! I love this video and how you organized your bookshelf! It looks really good! I like that it’s not overstuffed and there are room for decorative items. I also like what you talked about in the beginning of the video about limiting your shelf space to one bookshelf and letting go of the idea that we should always aim to buy books when we could always borrow books from the library. I also love when you shared what reading was like for you in your childhood. I too grew up in a household where we could not necessarily have the means to buy the books we want but relied a lot on the library. My husband was the same. My young kids now of course has many books in their room (I do buy them books also limited in one bookshelf) but we still go to the library as well so they grow up also loving libraries. Thank you so much for sharing this! It also motivates me to keep my bookshelves organized and to think twice when buying a book vs borrowing!

    Getting carried away thinking and talking about Classics is very relatable, I've read many of the books on the top shelf, so I'll look forward to your thoughts on different publications eventually making it to the internet. The idea of a buddy-read with the giveaway winner is also a charming one, hopefully the schedules align! That is so very sweet that you are reading such amazing books with your son. In our house, my teenage son isn’t very interested but my little daughter loves reading together so I cannot wait to share such amazing books together. You have many great books on your list. War and Peace I read so long ago I want to revisit it. I also love your tradition of reading a Jane Austen at Christmas!

      Ha, ha! Things are the other way round in my household - it is my teenage daughter who is more interested in football than books :) I just checked out your video on "Wives and Daughters". I am excited to have found your channel as I start my literary journey. I read aloud to my children all the time, many children's classics, but I also want to read more "for myself." What do you think of audibooks?

    • @Paulina-Maria
      @Paulina-Maria 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Welcome to the channel! I am so glad you are here. I firmly believe in my motto: "Read whatever and however you like, as long as you are reading!" Audiobooks are fantastic, especially for busy parents who don’t always have the luxury of sitting down in peace to focus on a book ;) Research has not definitively shown that listening is any less effective than reading-it really comes down to personal preference. Each format has its pros and cons. While audiobooks may require slightly less direct engagement (because you can listen while multitasking), a skilled narrator can bring the story to life with vocal inflections and character interpretations. In fact, I am currently listening to The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, narrated by Maggie Gyllenhaal, and her performance is extraordinary-it has truly blown me away. That said, not every book translates perfectly to audio. For instance, books with experimental prose or heavy reliance on graphics can be harder to follow in audio form. I will do my best to point those out in my videos so you know what to expect. Top tip - always listen to the sample recording first to work out if you like the narration. For example, I found the narration in the sample of Intermezzo by Sally Rooney had a really strong Irish accent which I knew I would struggle with. So I decided to read a paper copy instead. Ultimately, I say go for it! Let me know how it works out for you- I would love to hear about your journey. 😊

    What would you recommend for a beginner?

    • @Paulina-Maria
      @Paulina-Maria 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well done for venturing into the classic's world! Modern classics are sometimes easier to read, for example Agatha Christie is a safe bet. I always get motivated by a play or movie I want to see and then read the book first. Not sure if you are near London, but for a long time they have been showing a play "Witness for the Prosecution" and are still showing "Mousetrap". Also her books tend to be not too long which helps as it gives you the sense of success! I also devoured Gabriel Garcia Marquez in my teens. Some complain that there is a lot of names to remember (similar to War and Peace) but I have never found it an issue. However, his other works such as "Love in Time of Cholera" are also fantastic novels and very easy to digest, especially if you enjoy a bit of magical realism. If you would prefer older classics, then I would highly recommend "The Lady of the Camellias". It is a tragic romance written by Dumas after his more famous "Count of Monte Christo" (which I is super long!) which means his writing was extra polished by then. The movie "Moulin Rouge" is said to be inspired by the novel, as is the opera "La Traviata" - it might be fun to see those after the book. If you would prefer older classics then I would recommend Austen - such fun to read! I will be talking about "Pride and Prejudice" in my video next Friday so stay tuned. Also, I have not read these two yet but most say "Great Gatsby" and "Rebecca" are easy to read too. I am sure our lovely community will jump in and give great advise too! Let me know how you get on - you have got this :)

      @Paulina-Maria I tried doing it over the course of a year first, but I found I had more trouble remembering all the names and such. (I did Les Miserables over a year and loved it). I restarted it the beginning of November and it took me until Christmas. It's whatever pace works for you. I would just choose a pace that is quick enough that you don't have time to forger as much, but slow enough to savor and appreciate Tolstoy's writing.

    Great video and favourites! I purchased the book Girl A because of your recommendation. Also the book Never Split the Difference as you mentioned it previously. Circe is on my TBR pile! The book that made the most impact on me this year would be Pachinko. I love that book and the strength of the women in that story. I also like Orbital which won this year’s Booker. I also really love novellas this year. Small Things Like These and also this book called The Driver’s Seat by Muriel Spark which was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize. Dark book but interesting!

      Hi Tina, Thank you for your lovely comment! I hope you and your family are all set for a wonderful Christmas 😊 I absolutely loved Pachinko! I read it in just a week-I could not put it down. The writing was so succinct and yet so impactful. It was right up there with Brotherless Night for me, but alas, only one could take the top spot! Small Things Like These is on my list too-I just need to brace myself for the tears... Thank you for mentioning The Driver’s Seat. Say “dark book,” and I’m in! 😅 I have also heard about Orbital. Its setting is not my usual pick, but since you recommend the book, I will definitely add it to my list. Thank you for the suggestion! So many incredible books to dive into in 2025! P.S. I am so happy you will read Girl A - finally I will have someone I can talk to about this book! Just be warned - it is very, very dark-definitely not one for Christmas cheer. Think Lars von Tier's movies and similar exposing of the inherent darkness within humans. Maybe save it for after the New Year! 😉

    Hi Paulina! I’m one of your first subscribers. I live in Canada, a mom to two young kids, and I love books too and watching Booktube! I love your videos. Thank you for sharing your love of reading! Great videos so far! For future suggestion, if possible, maybe a book shelves tour as I’m always curious to know how people organize their books and how to make a decision on what books to keep (should we keep every book we read?), where to buy or when to buy books (thrift store or brand new or borrow from the library). I live in a small space and I know buying books brand new can be quite expensive. I do like getting books from thrift stores though! Anyway, looking forward to your next video! 😊

      Hello to Canada from the UK! Thank you so much for your kind words and for being one of my first subscribers-it really means a lot to me! 💛 I love hearing that you are a fellow book lover, especially as mum with two young kids. Life must be so busy for you! Is reading not the best form of self-care? 😉 I absolutely love your suggestion for a bookshelf tour and the topic of organising and deciding what books to keep! I will definitely add this idea to my list for a video in the New Year. It is great timing because I have to re-organize all my bookshelves anyway. For most of my life, space and budget for owning books have been limited and I have only recently started a collection but it has grown surprisingly quickly... I do have some rules around prioritising the purchase list, and I almost never buy new books. There is something about giving a book a second life that makes me super happy 😊 Thanks again for your thoughtful comment-as the first comment ever received it will forever be special to me! 💛 PS. I have a Canadian husband so Canada has a big place in my heart and I visit it every year. Is it not amazing how books can bring us all together, no matter where we are in life or the world!

      Thank you Paulina! I’m excited to learn more about your ideas on how to organize our fave books and when/where to buy books and when to share them. I think it’s a great topic as not everyone has the space or the budget to buy all the books. And I totally agree with you! I love physical books for that reason as with physical books I can share the books to others more easily - lend my favorite books to family and friends or donate them at my local thrift store or a free library! Also love the Canadian connection. I’m proud to be Canadian but I also love everything British! Kazuo Ishiguro is one of my favourite authors and many classic English writers like C.S. The less screen time, the better! Some things are too convenient to give up (i.e. Google Maps!). But there are many things we have conditioned ourselves to do using screens. Should we step back a little to give ourselves a break from screens? What is your habit that helps you stay away from screens?
