Discovering Xuzhou, Jiangsu: China's Underrated Food Heaven 🇨🇳
2 Days in Xuzhou, Jiangsu: China's Best Kept Secret
For our first China Travel Vlog of 2025 we are in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. On a spontaneous trip, just a couple hours train ride from Shanghai, I had no idea what to expect from this bustling city in the heart of Jiangsu province.
Having already travelled to Suzhou, Yangzhou, Danyang, Nanjing, and other cities in Jiangsu, China I was absolutely blown away by the food culture of Xuzhou and now have an all-time favourite food- can you guess what it is?
About Xuzhou:
Xuzhou (Chinese: 徐州), also known as Pengcheng (彭城) in ancient times, is a major city in northwestern Jiangsu province, China.
Xuzhou is one of the oldest cities in China with a civilization dating back more than 5,000 years and a city history of over 2,600 years . It is located in the northwest of Jiangsu Province and serves as a crucial transportation hub since ancient times, often referred to as the “Gateway to Five Provinces” . The city covers an area of 11,765 square kilometers and has a population of about 9 million .
Xuzhou is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and historical significance. It is known as the birthplace of Han culture, being the hometown of Liu Bang, the first emperor of the Han Dynasty, and the former capital of Xiang Yu, the Overlord of Western Chu . The city is home to numerous cultural relics and historical sites, including the “Three Wonders of the Han Dynasty”: Han Tombs, Han Stone Relief Carvings, and Han Clay Figurines of Terracotta Warriors and Horses . These sites attract visitors from around the world and are representative of Chinese Han culture .
Xuzhou has been ranked among the happiest cities in China .
In addition to its historical and cultural significance, Xuzhou is also known for its natural beauty, with attractions like Yunlong Lake, Yunlong Mountain, Pengzu Garden, Hubu Mountain, and Pan’an Lake . The city boasts a thriving ceramic industry and a diverse cuisine, including Huaiyang cuisine, famous for its delicate flavors and exquisite presentation .
Xuzhou is a city that blends the past and present, offering a unique experience for visitors who are interested in both history and modern development .

The city defines the Chinese way of BBQ, but the land of Xuzhou has been the scene of numerous wars throughout Chinese history.
Yes, it has a very rich history such that it was “the birthplace of Han”.
@@ExpatNatt Yes. Indeed. It was a little bit more than 21 hundred years ago. It is also the ancestry of my mother whose maiden last name is also Xue came from. I definitely miss it a lot and will trace my root back there someday.

Xuzhou is not a popular tourist attraction like Suzhou for example for foreign tourists! But historically it was a famous city back to the Three Kingdom ! Thanks for sharing.

Actually I can speak some Chinese but this sponsorship was to show that even if you cannot, there are still options. Whilst I can converse with my friends, colleagues, and husband who use mandarin, many family members do not use standard mandarin and it wouldn’t be possible to learn all the dialects and languages.

Do you need a permit to fly a drone in China?
Yes but the type of permit depends on the drone. They are regularly changing the drone laws so be sure to check before flying a drone. All drones must be registered and the DJI Fly app is great at telling you what flight restrictions there may be in a certain area. Other areas may be no fly zones or may require an additional permit/registration with local law enforcement. Hope this helps!

And maybe you could change your location setting on your TH-cam or Google acount and VPN address from China to UK, USA, Japan or somewhere else(Taiwan, Hongkong, and Singapore not included) to avoid the regulation on youtube. Do not know if it could work.

Thank you, it took months of planning and months of editing for literal pennies but we do it because we love it. I wouldn’t say no to more money from TH-cam though to cover expenses 😉😂
@ExpatNatt There are websites where you can lease out your video clips, there are people and companies will pay to use your original videos and photos, but you still own the copyrights.

I led a group of 23 solar eclipse chasers to Xinjiang in 2008. I so much want to get back there. The Uyghur people are wonderful, the Urumqi night market was a hit. The weather in August was just plain hot. I will watch again soon. I reposted on my 2008 group and Beautiful China page.
