    I always thought it was suspenseful to hear that. As if something scary would happen after hearing that

    I actually just started listening to big finish last month. I've gotten both war room set's and just got the 8th doctor time war cass set. I want more 8th doctor but don't want to go broke would you recommend the further adventures of Charlotte or the 2022 8th doctor adventures set's or maybe the 2023 ones

    Thanks a lot. Im so overwhelmed w how many stories there are and a lot of them are $$$$$$ so this is helpful to narrow down where to start.

    My first was Only The Monstrous, which I managed one episode of when it first came out and never touched again. Now on my recent rewatch of Dr Who I picked up Scherzo and am using wayyy too much money picking up the best stories Even though most of them are on Apple Music, I’ve got to commend the Big Finish App as my favourite way to “collect” these stories. Putting them on a streaming service is great until I hit shuffle on my phone and get a random insert instead of a song!

    I hardly collect or listen to any of Big Finish audios but the only one that I did bought it got my attention was of course David Tennant and Tom Baker's out of time. Cuz I always wanted to hear Tom Baker and David Tennant together for the first time and this audio made it happen. That's why when I made that Doctor Who event called The Disturbance in the Multiverse I did the voice of the 10th and the 4th doctor and reference Big Finish Out of Time.

    I listened to all the Volumes 1-4 Short Trips and was genuinely shocked to discover that most of them were written by fans and not professional writers. They're so good.

    I mainly agree with your conclusions, if not all of your reasoning. I do think that Star Trek has made better use of the Cybermen (Borg) than Doctor Who - Even though Who invented them. Yes, there are too many stories in which they could have been swapped out for nearly any other alien monster - which is a waste. But I do love a well told BUS (base under seige) story... because our enjoyment of stories comes from how well they are told, not how original they are. But, yes, I do wish they would make more use of ideas like the lost of your humanity and stuff... or even just deal with the consquences of the stories they do tell properly (where is the Cyber-Brigadier now? Does he help out UNIT? Has he gone back to Doris?) Similarly... I get a little frustrated with what they do with the Ice Warriors too (when is someone going to work out that they only work if you write them as people not monsters?)

      I have nothing against the bus stories, they're actually probably my favourite story formula in Who, it's mainly that it's spiralled into them being in their current state as interchangeable. I do think I could have expanded on a lot of my points in greater detail but hey ho. With the Ice Warriors, I'd love for someone to give them a proper revamp because I feel like we haven't had a single truly great Ice Warrior story, on TV at least.

    My first Big Finish stories were "Patient Zero" which was the start of the last Six/Charley trilogy and "Legend of the Cybermen" which was the last of a trilogy. Despite not having any experience with the Charley and limited experience with the Classic Series, Patient Zero is still one of my favorites.

    Great guide and some solid recommendations. FYI the Lucie Miller run was originally aired on BBC Radio 7 (later renamed to BBC Radio 4Extra). The station mainly focuses on repeats from Radio 4's back catalogue and used to have a daily hour dedicated to sci-fi, horror and fantasy branded as "The 7th Dimension", often introduced by Nicholas Briggs himself. Lucie Miller was my gateway to Big Finish and she remains one of my top companions to this day.

    I personally always thought that the cybermen could work so well as an allegory for conversion therapy. It's a dark thing in human history to think about how many people were lobotomised and tortured because of what they wanted or thought. It could be the perfect backdrop for a cyberman story. Cause they are always at their best when they are at their creepiest.

      Oh definitely, and I think that the 11th doctor adventures are about to do something with that, but it would be great to see that kind of thing on screen

      Yea it was a really big deal when BF got him on board. I was sooo excited at the time, I mean these were the wilderness years; no “Who” on TV and the movie was a fading memory so it really was the next best thing and fortunately it did not disappoint. And, as a bonus, the David Arnold version of the theme is still the best reworking since Peter Howell’s. Fact.

    I started out with Tennant’s first set. I hadn’t seen much Classic Who at that point and I figured acclimating to the new medium would be a lot easier with a Doctor I was familiar with. Learning how to experience audio was a bit of an adjustment, but I’ve since listened to hundreds of hours, with a great many hundreds to go.

    I started first with Out of Time, with David Tennant and Tom Baker. I fell in love eith big finish so much that my irish friend sent me down the Paul Mcgann rabbit hole. The Charlotte Pollard arc was so amazing. I would've loved for you to mention the David Bradley First Doctor adventures line. I love Big Finish so many good stories. I've always dreamed of having a channel with a co-host to talk about this stuff.

    The Cybermen are the biggest reason why I hope we get a spinoff with a higher age rating set at some point where Humanity are spread across the galaxy. The overall pitch would be to show what various villains are capable of when the Doctor isn't around, with a full season dedicated to an arc that places the Cybermen in a prominent role (either in one of the Cyber Wars or in a situation that fits with the Cybermen but rare get done with them).

    • @tonaldissonance
      @tonaldissonance ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I've always thought that the cybermen would lend themselves to a horror focused series in particular. It also has limitless political commentary potential
