Great tutorial
Thank you. I have a full length tutorial coming out soon. Will announce on Instagram - @ivanweiss.london

This is so informative. As a headshot photographer, this has given me new ways of thinking about how I approach these sessions. Thank you both!
Glad it was helpful!
Fantastic tutorial! Loved the advice about resting your eyes and looking at the image from a different perspective while editing.
Eye health is important!
what were your camera settings? Were all the flashes set on the same power? Same channel but different groups I assume? Thanks!
So long ago I can’t remember precisely. If it doesn’t say in the video, I’d guess at 1/200sec, ISO100, f/4. Power slightly lower on the bottom unit. All same channel but different groups.
I wish there were physical 8x10s present during this interview just to see how she flicks through them until she lands on something that really piques her interest and then explain what made it so compelling.
I doubt physical prints are part of the workflow. Digital is far more common
@@IvanWeiss-london Oh wow, I don’t know why I didn’t think it’d all be digital nowadays. This was a lovely conversation btw. I’ve been binging your old videos!
Ivan’s portraits always make me stop scrolling
Fidel Castro vibes!
Siempre!
If Affinity Photo gets something like PS's newish Subject, Sky, and Object selection tools...I'd switch to Affinity in a heartbeat. For me the AI selection tools just make my workflow much quicker. Also, there are some great plugins for PS that aren't available with AF. This is also, not to mention, the fantastic masking tools in LR.
Well that C-Stand won't fly away, for sure.
You have c-stands that can fly?
Excellent conversation, impressive photography!
This is the second time I've watched this video and enjoyed it (again). I also use Godox AD200 Pro strobes and find them very useful for various types of shoots. Watching this time brought a couple of questions to mind. 1. You mentioned you shot your subject (Barbara) with an 85mm 1.4 lens. Is that a Canon lens? if so, is it "L" glass? 2. It appears you're using 1 ft x 4 ft softboxes. Please confirm or correct my observation. Thanks for the video and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks in advance...
Hi Kenneth. Glad you enjoyed the video again. Yes, here I am using a Canon EF 85mm ƒ/1.4L IS. The softboxes by Rotalux/Elinchrom are sometimes listed as 1' x 3', sometimes 30cm x 90cm, and sometimes 35cm x 100cm. As I understand it, the size of the softbox has never changed, but the manufacturer's description is different depending on which country it is sold in. Any softbox of more or less those dimensions is usable for this type of set up.
@@IvanWeiss-london Thanks for the info, Ivan. Much appreciated.
I'm sorry But with all these colour grading tutotials I'd like you to show the original photo, and tell us what you think is wnorg with it, and what you want to achieve, so that we can see your progress and how you do it.
You can see the original photo at 01:44. It's not that there is anything wrong with it. I'm just sharing some techniques that I use to manipulate colour and contrast in order to make things that look pleasing to me.
Are you using 12"×36" strips?
Yes. They are listed as 30x90cm or 35x100cm - roughly equivalent to 12"x36"
Very bad sound!!!.
really enjoyed this. learn a couple of things. great job
Thanks for the video Ivan. Have you tried these little lights as white background flashes ? Maybe then we dont need to bigger unit that you have used in this video?
Yes, they can easily light a white wall
@@IvanWeiss-london thanks for taking the time to reply:)

This is a sponsored video for Affinity Photo?
It's a video made by the Affinity team as part of a series in which they interview professional users of their products. You can see more on their TH-cam channel
you rock man!
Just found this looking to see if my AD200's were enough - I guess so! question with the triangle setup - the two side strips are they facing the subject or feathering the subject - hard to tell!
06:29 onwards. I like to feather the lights. Try it and see what you like.
I’m two years late but the knuckle on your grip head should’ve been on the right. That prevents the bar from completely falling if it ever became loose.
I'm an actor headshot photographer in Melbourne, Australia. I've been doing it for about 4 years now. This interview was really insightful. I get so many conflicting requests and comments from clients, agents, etc. that I'm not sure where I'm going. But this interview really helped me reset and think fresh. Thank you :)
Glad you found it helpful. My advice is to listen to your own instincts - there's no right or wrong, just do the work that you believe in and find the audience that connects with what you do.
Thanks for this video! What size are the strip boxes? I tried to follow the link, but it is no longer active.
They're 1'x3' or approx 35x100cm
Great content Ivan. Thanks for sharing.
Thats interview worth watching, for sure. Photographers, casting directors and actors will learn a lot from it.
Love it. More along these lines, please Ivan. Industry insider knowledge is both valuable and refreshing.
So, she judges how people look for a living. She's cute!
I think the job of a casting director is a little more involved than that. An actor's suitability for a role is not just about how they look. I guess it's a starting point.
@@IvanWeiss-london Of course. Especially with film and tv, a certain look lends itself to believability for certain roles. Great acting, imho, can surmount any preconceived notions, but I understand that time is money in show biz, etc., etc.
Loved this interview.. thought provoking, intelligent, witty and gave both perspectives. Well done both of you and thank you for doing this.
Glad you found it useful. I'd love to hear if there are other topics you'd like covered in future
@@IvanWeiss-london I have always liked your content, they are always meaningful and useful. I first stumbled upon your video where you talk about your setup for headshots with the triangle shaped elinchrom strip boxes, i watch it pretty often, always good to watch and look at the basics :). Would love to see a dedicated video on feathering light, i know you touched upon it in the setup video, but a more extensive one. Would also like to see a video on mixing soft and harsh lights for a shoot, using shadows gobo and soft light together. Those are the things that i can think of for now :). Oh and yes, kinds of catchlights would be a nice one :). Coming to think of it, how as a photographer do you go about putting your model / subject at ease and let them be themselves?
@@epradeep That pretty much covers everything! Thanks for the suggestions. I will endeavour to make some more videos soon.
@@IvanWeiss-london Thank you. Appreciate it :). And look forward to the next video :).
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure
Thank you so much for sharing this interview.
I know this is an older video but I still wanted to comment regarding the little struggle you're having getting the unit into the bracket. I would suggest feeding back of the flash unit into the front of the bracket, instead of the front the the unit into the back of the bracket. Hope this helps any newcomers that may come along.
What's your typical lighting ratio with the triangle setup?
Somewhere between 1/16 and 1/32. Generally equal settings on the two upper lights, slightly lower power on the lower light.
Fidel Castro did it first!
And probably a lot better
"Pop" is the favorite word of photographers on social media.
If we were good with words we probably wouldn't be making pictures
@@IvanWeiss-london Touché. And if I were a good photographer, I wouldn't be a keyboard warrior.
@@Daniel_Zalman 🤣
what makes it look so much like an oil painting?
I'm never sure how to answer that one. Some paintings look like photographs, some photographs look like paintings. Maybe try to say a bit more about which specific characteristics remind you of an oil painting. Is it the pose? The light and contrast? The colours? The depth of the shadows?
Ty so much for lesson ,lut and everything. Is so much for a nub like me who want lern 😇😅
Ivan, this is phenomenal. Finally, a chance to see how a real artist edits an image. I really like your WinterGreen Lut. Can you do a video where you explain your approach to working with colors? For example, how to harmonize colors or how to come up with color themes?
I don't take a scientific approach to colour. I just go with what looks and feels right to me at the time. But that is based on spending a lot of time observing light and colour in the real world. Possibly when other people are expecting me to be paying attention to other things 🤷♂
The elinchrom stripbox size please
1'x3', sometimes listed as 30x90 or 35x100

Hi Ivan. Thank you for your video. It's been really helpful. I am looking to replicate this to some degree. I have the Godox AD200 pro and the S2 bracket. Which speedring should I get for my Elinchrom softboxes? The Elinchrom website suggests...Rotalux Speedring for S-mount/Bowens EL26554. Does that sound right to you?
That depends which S2 bracket you have. The most common version is the Bowens mount. In this video I am using the version with Elinchrom mount. If you're not sure, do a google image search - they look very different, so you will be able to identify which one you have and can then buy the speedring that matches with your bracket.
@@IvanWeiss-london Ah, I see! That's what confused me...I thought all Godox S2 brackets came with the Bowens mount. I'll double check what I have on order. Thanks so much for your help. Best wishes, Chris
Amazing tutorial! Thanks for sharing this!!!
Are your canvases stapled onto the PVC pipe?
Carpet tape under, gaff tape over.
Amazing!! Ugh I have an ad600. So wondering if I should just get 3 led panels since it’s less expensive. Idk which I prefer continuous or flash
If you have the Godox S2 Bracket S-Type, you can also remove the lower rubber piece, which should help you to remove/insert the AD200 Pro a lot easier.
I put the rear end through the S2 bracket to mount it from what is the side that becomes the interior of the modifier. The knob won’t interfere with the opening in the bracket.
Do you notice any flare/low contrast in camera when shooting straight through the feathered light coming from the other side of the rotaluxes? Or is the falloff enough to make it weak when it reaches the lens? I've seen some clamshell alternatives with both key and fill pointed towards eachother (floor and roof direction) and always wondered about flare towards camera. Obviously your images turned out great so...I guess not a problem.
Never had a problem with flare. Good quality lenses, and a lens hood, seem to do the job on that.
Oh...so talented💕
Ive just bought the AD200 with the AR accessories kit upograded from a Yongnuo YN560, Absolutely love this bit of kit loads of power and lovely light. Im just in the testing stage at the moment and Ive used it on 2 shoots already. I have a pixapro collapsible beauty dish and together with the bare bulb option and grid i get amazing light on my subjects, I was always a "natural light" photographer but ever since i started using more flash the upgrade to this fantastic unit was definitely worth the expense I paid around £420 on Amazon Im definitely getting a 2nd unit this year . . . .
The AD200 is still my go to strobe
great next level stuff
