THE HISTORY OF WHORLTON CASTLE
มุมมอง 1.8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
GSI PARANORMAL th-cam.com/users/GsiWestYorkshire At the time of the Norman invasion, Whorlton was a small settlement owned by Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria. In early 1068 he was one of the leaders of a northern uprising against William I ultimately joining a combined resistance against the Normans under Edgar the Aetheling. William defeated this threat and, in what has become known as the 'Har...

ACKLAM HALL AND ST MARY'S CHURCH
มุมมอง 1.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
In the early 17th century, when Acklam Hall was owned by Sir Francis Boynton, its long association with the Hustler family began. William Hustler, a cloth merchant from Bridlington, wanted a country estate close to the River Tees, from where he could trade. Initially he rented Acklam Hall, but in 1637 William Hustler bought the whole estate - which comprised the whole of the Acklam township as ...
MULGRAVE CASTLE

The first fortification was built at Mulgrave in the years immediately following the Harrying of the North (1069 to 1070) - William I's ruthless devastation of large tracts of land in Northern England following a rebellion against Norman rule. The fortification was an earth and timber motte-and-bailey known as Foss Castle and was erected a few hundred metres away from the site of the later Mulg...

THE LEGEND OF BEGGARS BRIDGE
มุมมอง 7322 ปีที่แล้ว
Beggar's Bridge was built in 1619 by Tom Ferris, a wealthy merchant who became Sheriff of Hull in 1614 and Mayor in 1620. Legend has it that he was originally the son of a poor Egton farmer and loved Agnes Richardson, daughter of a squire across the River Esk in Glaisdale. Ferris was rejected as a suitor and denounced as a beggar by the squire. He thus resolved to go to sea to seek his fortune,...
THE LEGEND OF THE BLACK MONK
มุมมอง 2452 ปีที่แล้ว
A great night exploring and seeking out the truth behind the urban legend THE BLACK MONK. On the first full moon of every new year it is said that the black monk will appear and he is said to lower a drawbridge and checks on the chest of treasure that is still hidden in the tunnel that the monks dug which allowed them to visit Tockets Mill for all sorts of reason. Hope you all enjoy.

KETTLENESS AND SANDSEND RAILWAY TUNNELS
My old playground,I was born in Slaggy Island,(South Bank), spent the first 20 years of my life there, a short Trolly bus ride took me to these places, I remember the "Black powder house" we called it, a lot blacker then and less overgrown , this would be back in the sixties when I was about 15 years old, good days,I live up in Weardale now, another famous mining area I love to explore.
i have a piece of the railway in my house we found it while digging the drive up for resurfacing. its small gauge possibly the tertiary line which ran parallel to our property. we live granwood rd
I lived in Swainby for 10 years as a kid. The castle was our primary hangout point for all the kids in the village. Spent hours and hours there in the summer. Smoking, drinking, campfires all out of reach of the adults of course. Never saw or heard a damn thing.
Hi, this is news to me. I grew up in Saltburn and attended the local schools. At Huntcliff School, we were educated about the nearby mines, but there was never any mention of mines in Saltburn, especially a mine at Hob Hill. The school was next to Hob Hill, and I distinctly remember being told there was nothing underneath Saltburn. How much of the area do we not know about?
Are you doing anymore
What about skinningrove smugglers cave in cliff , and fan house between skinningrove and saltburn 👌
Myself and my family visited here today. We heard little children giggling/laughing right beside us. There was definitely no body else there. It was just after my children sat in the bathtub.
Errington Woods used to be my playground in the 1970s. I remember the drift mine entrance-bricked up?-right where you were. There were loads of remnants to be found in the woods back then. Cleveland County Council then obliterated most of it to create the Errington Woods County Park. You had no chance of seeing anything at Hob Hill mainly because it was a short lived, ill fated open cast mine, either side of the current road. The north side became Saltburn's rubbish dump and the south the golf course. The most interesting thing there is that the mining works discovered an anglo saxon cemetery in 1909. Keep up the good work and best wishes.
15:52.. Not sure what these stones are for, seem to be unique to Ravenscar, as they aren’t in Kettleness or Sandsend. Struggling to find any reference online either…
Dismantling the Scarb /Whitby was a mistake
Interesting video, albeit with some confusing comments. Sadly, I find the inlaid photo from the following morning to be a little ghoulish, as two of my friends lost their lives in this tragedy. The name, “Admiral Van Tromp,” came from a famous Dutch Admiral who vowed to sweep the British from the seas, and was chosen by the boat’s owner who happens to be Dutch. He went even further, in that he lashed a broom to her mast as a symbol, going against fishing superstition regarding brooms and fishing equipment.⚓️⚓️
CMHS stick signs up for the public, and make sites even more visible to public by leaving blue tarp everywhere, but they HATE ‘their’ sites being published on social media. Grinkle mine is a classic, might as well put a neon sign up
Did you have to get permission from the landowner to film here? How easy was it to contact him?
Lots you missed in errington woods..quarries..etc..the mine entrances have been filled in but i remember exactly where there are still.plus fan house and pumping house.
I fancy a walk up there, where’s best to park off the a174? I work in so very interested in our local history
Poor old Boro! They have one Grade One listed building in the entire place and the council builds a shitty housing estate ten feet away from it 😂
Love this channel and I'm glad you took your videos off private because I had the videos saved to go to the three shipwrecks and the Skelton mine and I was going to use the videos as reference. I just wish you'd upload more often
Thank you and there will be more videos to come but our shifts we work are different to each others so it difficult at the moment, but we will sort this. Thanks
I can't remember the name of the river it could be the stride? But I recently watched a hiking disaster story about somebody drowning in this river thats in the UK and is labelled as one of the most dangerous rivers in the world. They did a bit of a history lesson about the video and two young lovers in ancient times used to meet by this river, she was from one side of it and he was from the other. Usually they could cross safely for their romantic moonlight rendezvous but on this particular night it had been torrential rain so it was very deep and dangerous and they both jumped in and attempted to meet at the middle and both ended up drowning
Hi is the ss rohilla on the same stretch of beach as the other two wrecks you show in this video? Your video makes them all look within walking distance of each other on the same beach. I know where the concrete ship is and I will be able to find the trawler ok but the medical ship the one I really want to see I don't know where that is?? Its just when I have googled its location it says its inaccessible by foot but in this video it looks like its in the middle of the other two wrecks? Thanks any help would be appreciated please
Back in the 60s schools in Middlesbrough talked about Eston Hills and Iron Ore but not about how far the seam went South. It is the same with Whitby Jet where the seam is sloping under the North Sea. Jet, the Black Jewellery is the remains of Monkey Puzzle Trees, or Chilean Pine (alt. name).
Great video, I live nearby often wondered who owns this. I'd like to buy it as a build project.
there needs to be a part 3 when the people doing the digging is there
I went to Acklam Hall from 1962 to 1969. The area around was open fields at the time. Looks like the stable/laboratory block hs been demolished.
Top work lads Iv camped there many times with my boy’s beautiful sun sets 🤙🏻
Fantastic investigation ! Love the approach and professionalism. Give us more mate 👏🏻
Agin lads awesome work second vid 🫡🤙🏻
Thank you so much 👍👍👍👍
Funny that is my last name .Skelton . My family started out in northern England Yorkshire and migrated to Waterford Ireland
Excellent video. This small bore tunnel must have been a hell- hole for loco crews.
Brilliant mate enjoyed that. Subscribed
i wondered if you'd find this one. it was surrounded by trees and undergrowth when i was a kid. the tunnel fascinates me. guess i know where we kept losing the dog now! the buildings with the iron grates and the cobbles look familiar, but i didn't realise it was so extensive, and it's been 30 years, so my memory isn't that great :D
i lived near here, and when I was a child, all the roofs were intact. you could hide in there from the rain. I've never seen down the shaft before. It was still far too high to see over without standing on somebody's shoulders (which some of the adults did...)
I knew the previous land owner lord Ingleby who lived at Snilseworth Lodge his surname was Peak. I was unaware same as many others that there had been a former old structure in front of the castle, well done for adding this information great video and sound also as usual
Nice to hear Yorkshire/Teesside accents on a channel here Thanks for Posting you two
Strange, I just found your channel today, I was there at the same place on Tuesday , Thanks for posting well-hidden site, I never got stung by wasps just nettles. Its a very interesting site
Hi, how did you get in touch with the owner, my uncle said he went when he was youngee and there was a tunnel you could get in on the left side of the castle (looking from car) with a dungeon sort of thing.
What's the music in background please
Interesting video 2x👍 I remember years and years ago my gran took me through the tunnel that is now used by the potash mine. The track goes underground just outside Easington, not far from the Tiger Inn. I can't remember very much but it not a place to go back to now with the trains running.
Have you got any information and have you walked the railway line that curved round from Eston to the other side of the hill then headed towards Guisborough near Flatts Lane? There are sections in place, like for instance by the Cross Keys pub half just under half way between Flatts Lane and Guisborough
This is great content ! How this doesn’t have a million views versus other stuff that does baffles me. Great work ! Thank you.
Thank you Dave. Means alot
Spent many nrw year eve here middle of night ghost hunting for about 20 years nothing....
th-cam.com/video/sjHAtOoE8MU/w-d-xo.html. 5th March 2023. Revisit 7th March 2023 - the first adit ifrom the north portal of Sandsend Tunnel it flooded waist deep at the far end, its blocked by brick and wood ; possibly leading to a vertical drop. The second adit has now been exposed by very very lose shale, and leads onto a small grass plateau. This is showing signs that it will collapse and close the adit on the cliff side. The collapses you mention are from the air shafts above ground, they were just pushed into the tunnel before being capped, three original or shafts were built. Due to bad air, a further two air shafts were built
I’m a Sheffield descended from Ichabod, who was a descendant of John, who was a descendant of Edmund. it’s pretty cool to see ruins that my ancestors built and lived in hundreds of years ago that still stand. It’d be awesome to be able, and visit there some day…and reclaim my rightful throne lol
I might have subscribed if you didn't look like coppers or worse people trying to look like coppers
I had an ancestor that was born there.
Love this video, didn't want it to end. Cheers from Oz.
Thank you so much
Just been there last Monday for the first time and to honest did not know anything about it's history, so will put this on my watching when I have the time to watch it all, cheers Alan
Cheers Alan, it is a very interesting place with alot of history. Hope you enjoy it buddy
