MG Midget Blowing Smoke - Fixed!….I Hope
มุมมอง 683ปีที่แล้ว
If you watched my other videos you have seen that the car blows smoke at certain times. I installed an inexpensive oil catch can, purchased from Amazon for $38, which seems to have helped. Time will tell if this is a long term solution. Either way the plugs aren’t fouling at the moment, which is awesome!
Why Is My 1971 MG Midget Undrivable?

While out driving my MG Midget the car started to shutter and bog on acceleration. I was able to limp home because I wasn’t far, but now needed to figure out why the car suddenly became undrivable.

1971 MG Midget - Valve Seals/Springs, and Head Gasket Replacement
มุมมอง 1.8Kปีที่แล้ว
The purpose of this repair was to try and correct the car blowing oily smoke at certain times, and to try and correct a possible cause of fouling spark plugs. My assumption is that oil may be getting past the valve seals and leaking into the cylinders. I planed to replace the valve springs at the same time. Once I had the head off I found something else to fix first. Certainly not the professio...
1971 MG Midget Distributor Replacement
มุมมอง 4.1Kปีที่แล้ว
My car was running a little rough, so I decided to give an inexpensive distributor that I found on Amazon a try. There were no reviews, but for around $130 it seemed like it was worth a try. Model Number: yise-K1174 Unfortunately, the car would not run with the new unit installed. I played around with it for way too long before packing it in and reinstalling the old original part. I have driven...
1971 MG Midget - Sway Bar Installation

Maybe the best handling upgrade for the money if your car didn’t come with one. The sway bar shown is the smallest diameter and it still made the car feel better in corners.

This video describes how to change the starter, and how to clean one up if yours is still in decent condition. I bought the replacement from Rock Auto for around $82 ($68 core charge). Even though I quoted a lower amount in the video (sorry). It’s still cheap though. It also arrived in just a few days. www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/mg,1971,midget,1.3l l4,1204883,electrical,starter motor,4152 This...

1971 MG Midget - 22 Year Build Slideshow
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a collection of pictures of my build over a very long time. The earliest pictures were taken with an actual film camera. It's not an exciting video, so only watch if you really like seeing this kind of stuff. There is some narration, but it's not polished. The best part (as far as I'm concerned) is the first start of the engine. It's the first engine I have ever put together from the sm...
High Oil Pressure - 1971 MG Midget
มุมมอง 6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
After putting the first 200 miles on a rebuilt 1275 engine in my 1971 Midget I’m trying to find the cause of high oil pressure. The car also smokes until the pressure drops down, once it’s warmed up. This is part one of hopefully only two videos on this subject. It’s too cold for working in an unheated garage, so part two will be a few months from now.
MG Midget Door Card - Make Your Own
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I show how I made replacement door cards for my 1971 Midget. There are some great videos showing how to make door cards with other techniques, but I wasn't confident enough in my sewing abilities to give some of them a try. I think that my method gives a decent quality finish that's similar in design to the originals, but with plastic panels instead of the paper stuff they were ma...

      @@midgetmakeover Good job. I fitted an Accuspark module to the Lucas distributor on the 1275cc MG Midget engine in my 1970 Morris Minor Traveller a few years ago (along with a Burlen SU electronic fuel pump conversion), and it's been very good overall. Certainly a lot less hassle than conventional points.

    Thanks for your comment. I know lots of people have successfully used the push through mount things but I would never recommend it with an old Midget radiator after this mess. I forgot to mention in the video that the fan housing doesn’t even fit in the front without some trimming. The Moss fan kit relay was also lower quality than the cheap Amazon ones I bought for the lights. They need to do better. I was lucky to have a spare (if ugly) rad to use temporarily. Still added hours of work and will add hundreds of dollars to correct.

    I bought my 71 the same color after it sat in the garage for 43 years. The owner felt he was too old to work on it so he sold it to me for nearly nothing I dove into it very quickly. The car had no rust but needed Brake hoses and a clutch slave cylinder the previous owner had done everything else including a new tank. I had it up and running with a new head gasket and exhaust valves after five days. Since then, I have re-sprayed it and converted it to original spoke knock off wheels. New top I drive it every day I have put 5000 miles on it since October 23.

  • @dimadee
    @dimadee 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not sure if you got this sorted. 80psi on a cold engine with choke is not unusual for these engines. High oil pressure will not make it blow smoke. The oil pressure is measured with a hot engine. Many of us run 15w40 or 10w40 as the 20w50 is like honey when it is cold; this means high oil pressure and low flow.

  • @awalk5177
    @awalk5177 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Looks good to me and just needs running in. On these A series engines they should have small O rings on the valves to reduce oil passing down the valve stems. I would be interested to see after running in what the smoking was like when the rings have bedded fully with the bores.

  • @rogerking7258
    @rogerking7258 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I literally just did this job on my Frogeye yesterday afternoon, along with fitting new drums and shoes. Job went smoothly, but I'm intrigued by the packing of the bearing with grease. Obviously, it's normal & essential practice with unsealed ball and roller race bearings, but in this case the unsealed bearing is exposed to the rear axle oil. When I stripped the bearings out all the grease had long since been flushed out by this oil, but the bearings were nevertheless still well coated in oil and in not bad condition. I have an original 1958 works manual for the car and it mentions that the axle oil can reach the bearing so I can only assume that this is a satisfactory long term lubricant for it. I did nevertheless pack the new bearing with grease in the conventional manner so that there would be lubricant there until the axle oil found its way along to the end of the axle casing. I fit the seal with a special rubber lubricant (not rubber grease) that makes it almost possible to push them in by hand. I then lay the old seal on top of it before tapping in with a large socket (it's just a little protection for the rubber from the steel socket).The lubricant is made for fitting suspension bushes and the like and it really excellent because it goes off in the absence of air meaning that the seal is firmly held once fitted. It used to be an embarrassing product to order because it was called "rubber lube" and you always got a lot of innuendo from the supplier when you said what you wanted. Fortunately, they changed the name; unfortunately they changed it to "bush lube". They couldn't have made things any worse if they'd tried! If "bush lube" means nothing stateside, look it up for the British meaning.

    Looking at the distributor, as I have had many BMC engines over the past 50 years, it looks like the ignition timing is way out from where it should be. I think I would reset the static timing then do an adjustment with the distributor loose and rotate the distributor with the engine running so that it at least runs smoothly. It looks like it is too far advanced from the position of the vacuum advance.

If you pay close attention to how your original distributor and out just install the new one as close to the same position as possible and the car should run. Good luck with your car.

    Hello, this means you have too much pressure in the crank case, check the charcoal canister to make sure it flows if not John Twist has a nice video on how to refresh it, or you have too much piston blow by, worn piston rings, you can check that with a leak down tester witch is quite inexpensive but you need a compressor. Very nice videos. Good luck

Any tips on what to use? I'm also running fairly high oil pressure at idle, around 60psi if my gauge is accurate. Thanks again!

    Is there an electronic ignition module to replace the points & condenser?

    • @exasperated
      @exasperated ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, and it's.... Not very good. Well the usual, cheap, one (which is also sold not cheap by some unscrupulous outlets), isn't. It's an easy drop in, but you'll often find it sparks too soon when cranking. So you dial the ignition back, only to find then it's too retarded when running. So you advance it to where it should be, and get the whump whump near stall on the starter again. I've had this, others I've spoken to have had this... It seems to be a "characteristic". Also know of one that suddenly died. Good thing is, if you're really determined, they're cheap and easy enough to fit that you can carry a spare. Or keep a spare set of points/ condenser with you...
