Tech Talk! Seat Tube Angles and the Chisel Hardtail: how steep is steep enough?
This video is partly a response to comments from the first video I made about the Specialized Chisel Hardtail. The topic of whether the seat tube angle on said bike was steep enough came up, and little did the commenters know how much I think about this topic, so I figured I'd take the opportunity to talk about it a little.
I love the topic of bike geometry, and I think seat tube angles are one of the more interesting areas of that topic, so I've tried to cover some of the basic principles that I've found in this area. I'm not claiming to have any final word on this or anything so grand as that, but I do claim to have some experience with the topic, having built many frames and ridden many bikes. Of course I should have talked about many other things in this video, but I don't tend to get them all each time, so maybe I'll do a more comprehensive overview in the future (I should have at least mentioned Grant Petersen and his Rivendell bikes, which have tended to have seat tube angles well under 73 degrees, and which ride great, though they're definitely a far cry from a modern enduro smasher).
I hope you enjoy this topic as much as I do, and if you do, I expect many of you will have opinions about it! Thanks for watching and please like and subscribe if you enjoy any of the videos I've made!

MTB Pre-Flight Check and Tune
มุมมอง 6014 วันที่ผ่านมา
Over the years I've seen so many bikes coming into the shops I've been at that just haven't had any love between rides, so I wanted to do a short video about a basic tune and check that I do to my mountain bikes before every ride. These are things that I've learned over many years-both from experiences in the shop, and on the trail-that I have found to help keep my bike working well over the lo...
Happy new year! This is the direction I see the channel going in 2025.
มุมมอง 1214 วันที่ผ่านมา
As anyone can see, this channel has gotten off to a slow start; but I'm excited to do a lot more with it in this new year! I've got a lot of how-to videos that I'd like to do, and I'm sure that I'll end up wanting to ramble on about some bike part or idea that relates to bikes on more than one occasion. I hope that you can find something useful in my videos, and that through making them and int...
Info Snack: Teravail Kessel Tires
มุมมอง 54หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been riding the Teravail Kessel tires in a 29 x 2.4" Durable, Grip casing variation for about a year now and I wanted to give a quick rundown of my thoughts. There are obviously lots of reviews out there, so this is really meant to be more of a small personal experience note that I hope will help someone who's looking for another set of tires. I've really enjoyed the consistent feel of the...
Wheel build: Tips, Tricks, and a lot of rambling....
มุมมอง 30หลายเดือนก่อน
I love building wheels, and I've built a lot of them over the last 25 years or so, and because of this, I'd like to share some of the things I've learned in that time. This isn't a step-by-step wheelbuilding video; rather, it's me building a wheel. Along the way, I'll explain some of the steps that I take in the process and give some tips that I think are useful so that you can build better whe...
Box News: new trends in packaging in the bike industry
มุมมอง 562 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just a quick note about a new type of box that Specialized is using for their frames...as well as a quick peak at the next project I'm working on. I really love seeing what I feel like is becoming a larger trend in the industry toward less plastic in packaging, and when I opened this new Specialized Chisel FS frame box, I was really impressed by what I saw so I wanted to share it with you. Than...
Specialized Chisel Hardtail: thoughts after the first 2 months
มุมมอง 8742 หลายเดือนก่อน
For the past few months, I've been riding the Specialized Chisel hardtail that I built up recently, and I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you what I'm thinking about it. This isn't a very technical video, and if anyone is interested in more of the tech, I'd be happy to make a more technically-oriented video at some point. My goal with this was really just to talk about the main things that...
What are the Best Brakes for Your Hub-Motor Equipped E-Bike?
มุมมอง 1479 หลายเดือนก่อน
If you own a Rad Power, Lectric, Aventon, or any one of the myriad hub-motor equipped e-bikes that are available today, you may have noticed that your brakes aren't very good (if you haven't noticed that, then maybe you got a good one, so great!). At my bike shop we deal with these bikes a lot, and I get tired so seeing customers having to come back every couple of weeks to have their brakes ad...
What's the best endurance gravel bike to start out?
มุมมอง 4019 หลายเดือนก่อน
As someone who's been in the bike business for almost two decades, and who has had a deep love of riding bikes for as long as I can get away with it, I often find myself thinking about what the best bike for a given type of rider, or type of ride, or any other distinction of a segment that I can come up with. On this particular day, I had a customer come into my shop, Piccadilly Cycles, in Ashl...

    Bought a stock HT Chisel Comp last spring and thought it could do with a dropper post - now I know why I intuitively thought of that 👌 - and with climbing, the seat tube angle is pretty much perfect to me. And agree with the XC-gravel bike use/position.

    Bought the carbon version (Epic) and it is awesome. The geometry is perfect for me and my riding style. Super efficient and climbs like its pedal assisted. Congrats on your new bike. Enjoy it!

      The Epic is a sweet bike, and I'm sure you'll love it:) The climbing on these bikes is definitely a standout feature, and it's really helped remind me of how much I enjoy a lightweight XC bike (even if it's not the bike I choose for every ride)! Have fun out there!

    I just can't look at that frame close up without thinking hairy balls lol. I'm trying to decide between a Chisel lightweight XC project build bike (2023 Silver Spectraflare colourway) or the Epic hardtail Comp, 400 to 500 g difference in frame weight is substantial, and the Epic comes with a Sid fork and the new S-1000 t-type AXS drive train, although I would still probably look at upgrading the crank and cassette to XO or XX for weight savings. With current offers and cycle2work scheme, the Chisel is super affordable and would massively increase the budget for components. It's proving to be a super hard decision.

      @@SilverShamrock71 Haha:)…yeah I hear you on the graphics on this one. I really like the way it looks, but pretty much everyone who sees it seems think hair: pet hair, other hair, whatever. That said, I think it’s a rad bike and it’s super light and fun. One interesting difference between the Epic and the Chisel is the slope of the top tube, and so the stand over. My buddy has an Epic hardtail, and the stand over for the same size frame is much higher. This could be good if you want to run a frame pack or something like that, but personally, for a mountain bike, I prefer the lower top tube. It keeps the tube from being in the line of the brake levers if you ever happen to crash and have the bars spin around, and it just feels lower profile. If you ever want to run a transmission group (or just want to get one stock as you noted with the S-1000 version) the Epic is the only choice since the Chisel uses the older, non-UDH, sandwhich hanger. I think you’d be stoked either way, but it depends what you want to end up with.

      @@brendonrambles Well I've put a deposit down on a silver Chisel, to hold it until my cycle2work kicks in in about a month or so. Agree on the frame, it somehow looks sleeker than the Epic. Actually decided on an XX1 mechanical set (cable activated) eventually rather than AXS, will run the NX until I'm ready to upgrade. Have already secured a lightly used SID SL Ultimate (2023 edition) fork set. Will look at carbon Roval Controls, but will hold out until they are on sale, Next upgrade after the forks will probably be a BikeYoke dropper. I'm looking forward to getting started with the build.

      @@SilverShamrock71 That sounds like a rad build! It's funny because in the evolution of my build, I've ended up replacing the Eagle drivetrain that I had on the bike with an older X01 11 speed drivetrain that I had around. Somehow it just seemed fitting for this build to have a lighter option since I really didn't find myself using the 52t cog ever, and the bike was already so light it seemed like a good idea to make it even lighter! Even though the shifting with the AXS stuff is great, I tend to be a bigger fan of the cable actuated Sram parts because they're lighter, and if the bike has decent cable routing (which this one does), then they tend to shift perfectly. That's a bigger discussion of course, but still, I like your choice.

      @@brendonrambles Well I may experiment with AXS further down the line. Hey quick question, do you know if a 3 position remote twinloc lever set would comfortably clear the top tube? I'm planning on running a remote fork lockout and a dropper. Bike fit test is scheduled for next Monday, so not sure if I'll be running a slammed XC stem position or a more relaxed stem and bar set up as yet. Also, I've seen a chisel frame in chameleon colour flip, grey, blue, green which looks really smart, pity they don't seem to do it anymore, I'm sure the satin silver will grow on me and there's always custom painting if I decide that I really like the frame (which, going by the numerous favourable reviews, I think I will). SID SL Ultimate in gloss black arrived yesterday and I'm watching the market for a set of Roval Controls in carbon

      @brendonrambles 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SilverShamrock71 That sounds like it's going to look amazing! As far as the clearance, I can't say for sure, but I'd tend to think that there's a good chance that it will clear because of how low the top tube is on this frame. I've found that even with quite a slammed stem and a flat bar I don't have any clearance issues with the levers on my bar, but I realize those Twinloc levers are larger, so it's possible there could be an issue. Let me know how it goes!

    I buy the frame but sold after 6 months i have some issues whit the geo, the seat tube angle is pretty slack for today standars at 74 degrees and the heat tube angle should be at least 66.5 not 68, yes the frame is beatiful but i rather have a good geometry hardtail than just a good looking bike, theres a lot of good hardtails whit better geometry and at a better price

    • @brendonrambles
      @brendonrambles 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@pepeanza6187 I totally get where you’re coming from. I guess the geometry feels ok to me because overall this just feels like a very cross-country oriented hardtail, rather than one of the more progressive hardtails that have become popular more recently, and I’m ok with that-for what it’s good for. I really like how light the bike is and how well it climbs, and I actually enjoy the more on-edge feeling that it gives me on a descent because of its very short travel and pretty aggressive, racey geometry. But again, I totally get where you’re coming from and I don’t think I’d want it to be my only bike. As far as the seat tube angle is concerned, I really don’t think it needs to be steeper because of the short travel and the fact that it’s a hardtail. There’s a lot to say there so I’ll just leave it there. I started out with the seat more slammed forward like I usually ride it these days, and then ended up sliding it back more because the at felt more appropriate on this bike. Anyway, thanks for the insight, and I think this is a great example of how a bike can be great, but still not be right for everyone. Thanks again!

      In other words, you buy into marketing hype and believe everything TH-camrs tell you. I doubt you could honestly tell the difference between a degree or two without looking at a geo chart. Buy a bike based on comfort and suitability to the terrain you ride most.

    You hit it on the head Rambler. I have always been amazed at how products are packaged. It's great to see how companies innovate. It also costs less for the company to minimally package with recylables. I'm a BMX guy but also into electronics and am seeing the same from the big synthesizer companies. I subscribed. Thank you! PS: I looked up your location, that green space called Sunrise behind the store use to be a railroad yard. There was also a roundhouse on that property based on the land scars I see on Google Maps. You are in a historic railroad town. You guys have a beautiful store and town!

      @brendonrambles หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words! As you say, it does seem like it would be more cost-effective to use less packaging, which I guess I tend to think might be one thing that helps better packaging get adopted more quickly now that it seems to have started being a bit of a trend. I know I look at that as a very good thing! It's also cool to hear that this isn't just a trend in bikes (though I'm not surprised to hear it). It's always great to see good things happening in the world! Yeah, the land across the tracks is now just a superfund site because of that roundhouse, but for the moment at least that mostly means that from work I get to look out at the deer and hawks that use the land, and that I have a free view of the mountains to the north!
