Coming at you with a quick and dirty 1 take cover of an old favourite this week. It’s been a tough week with some heavy family news. Power Drill + Snare Drum = Tone??? Testing out Vented Shells & Heads

Ever wanted to get that iconic late 90's/early 00's Vented Snare sound? Today I drill down (pun intended) into how you can capture the vibe of those vented heavy ply shells popularised by OCDP back in the day. I'm having difficulty tuning the resonance. I press it a little and it already reaches 400 Hz. My Snare is a Gretsch Drums USA 14" x 6.5" Hammered Chrome over Brass Snare. Due to the fact that the material is in Brass and the drumhead resonance is very thin, is it normal to reach 400Hz so quickly? Because on Toms you have to tighten it a lot more. I use Tune bot

      Hey! I have almost the same drum. Gretsch 14x6.5 hammered brass. I’m guessing you have diecast hoops? They are way more sensitive tuning wise than typical triple flanged hoops. You need way less motion with a tuning key to jump up significantly in pitch.

    Why does no one ever talk about the app that works in conjunction with the tunebot itself! You simply type in drum sizes desired pitch and sustain and the calculator gives you the recommended settings based on a mathematical formula to get your whole kit sounding great! Without this its a bit like a bike without a chain!

    Great video! I love the insights. I do have a question about the reso head, though. When I try to tune the 4 lugs near the snare bed to the same pitch as the others, the hoop seems to bend. Is this normal? I’m worried about potentially damaging the drum. Any advice would be appreciated!

    • @benking9160
      @benking9160 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey mate, glad to help, Because of the snare bed where the wires meet the edge of the drum you treat it differently to all other drums! Never try to make the lugs next to the wires the same pitch as the others! That is why you are bending the rim and you may have permanently distorted it unfortunately! Generally the lugs next to the wires will always read 10 or so hat lower than the others.. so just tune normally keeping that in mind.

    The plastic ring on my Emperor SMT is falling apart. I find a chunk of plastic on the floor every few days. I currently have the foam ring held onto the head with gaffer tape. I'm heading out today to just get a P3 and call it good. Wherever Remo sourced this plastic from, it's brittle. Drum has not moved since I put the head on 4 months ago.

      Strange! I’ve got 2 SMT’s going - the one from the video is still going strong and an emperor SMT that’s on one of the other studio kits. Neither have had any issues with plastic falling apart. Maybe you got unlucky or perhaps the head copped some sunlight?
