Vin Scully and Don Drysdale at St Louis, May 26, 1990
While visiting Los Angeles at the time, I had the good sense to borrow a friend's VCR to tape this random mid-season game. Vin does a pre-game conversation with Tommy Lasorda; Don has a post-game interview with starting pitcher Mike Morgan. And, as was still the standard with most ballclubs into the '90s, Vin calls the first three and last three innings...and as he goes over to do 4, 5, and 6 on radio, Don takes over the play-by-play. As Vin says, "We'll have it all..."

When did the Steelers eclipse the Pirates as the most popular team in Pittsburgh? I'd suggest it was right after the 1975 baseball season when the Pirates, after again being beaten in the playoffs by the Reds, fired their popular and distinctive broadcast voice Bob Prince. Officially, he wouldn't return to the broadcast booth until 1985, just a few weeks before his death at age 69. But as Time-...

The full show which is a little loose and sloppy to be generous is also up on this channel. But here's the segment that counts: Thirteen minutes with a couple of legendary personalities: Slim Gaillard (1916-91) and disc jockey Al Jazzbeaux Collins (1919-97). The house band is led by a legend among drum teachers, Sam Ulano, with Billy Gray (of the Widespread Jazz Orchestra) on trumpet. This was ...

He was one of the greatest of the Greatest Generation: Lt. Col. Jerry Coleman...in another typically great example of what radio play-by-play guys could do in the era when they also did television. There's lots of Ted Leitner and Bob Chandler too...with a couple of legends on the field as well: Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman. And the tragic figure Ken Caminiti...

From a little closet of a studio on East 23rd Street, this is the Jazzbeaux Christmas Show with Sam Ulano and the band, plus a rare TV appearance by the legendary jazz singer Jackie Paris. Despite the excellent on-set cuisine by Dr. Wok, I remember heading with Jazzbeaux and Jackie and a couple of others after the show to Chinatown where we continued to hold court for several hours. Unfortunate...

Even into the '90s, most major league ballclubs were still doing their radio and television with one team of broadcasters. As it was with most clubs, the Dodgers would have Vin Scully doing the first three and last three innings on TV. Then he'd switch over to radio for the middle three as Ross Porter (also an excellent broadcaster) came over from the radio side to do three innings of TV. I wis...

Fair warning: This program had no producer and looks it! I know there was no producer because I was there for the purpose of meeting one of the great characters of jazz, Slim Gaillard. And had there been a producer, Gaillard would have been on camera for the entire hour, instead of coming up to the stage at about 29 minutes in. This was a weekly show that was slapped together on the fly at the ...

12 20 61...Despite a top-tier team of writers and a new roster of comic talent in Tim Conway, Buck Henry, Joey Forman, and the Smothers Brothers, the New Steve Allen Show was buried in the ratings by the mega-hit Wagon Train (which ranked #1 in the Nielsens). It lasted 13 weeks. Not to suggest that this is anywhere near as good as a typical show from Steve's legendary (1956-60) NBC series...but...

    4 years ago, I placed a comment on the Utube, ON THIS GAME… Got to missing Vin so much I came back to watch again. I reckon I’m getting old and just want something nostalgic? I don’t know, but I do know Vinny was the BEST! Bob Uacker (SP) is a close second in Milwaukee. God Bless BOTH of them. Isn’t baseball great?

    I was 10 years old at the time. I remember we had moved in with my grandparents when I was three years old and I used to sneak out of the bedroom and stand in the hallway to watch Steve Allen, Ernie Kovacs, Gary Moore and outer limits. These truly were the golden days of entertainment.

    I can't believe it took until the Top of the 6th for Ross Porter to mention that this game, on Aug. 21, 1995, was Ismael Valdez's birthday. It happens to be MY birthday, too, Valdez is seven years younger than me, and so it surprised me that he was so strong in this one, on just his 22nd birthday. He had a great career. Great to hear Vin AND Ross Porter in this 1995 game. I need to find out about the Dodgers' forfeit during Ball Night vs. the Cardinals.

    • @yaddamop
      @yaddamop ปีที่แล้ว

      That was his actual name. I didn't know he went by Tom before he changed it to Tim, though. He had to change his name to Tim because there already was a Tom Conway in Hollywood at the time. In fact, my aunt told me this because she was in realty back in the day in California and sold the Conways a house. She got to be on his then-wife's bridge club. She said he was hilarious --- greeting the ladies at the door in his underwear or wearing a dress!

    Listening to Vin I could tell this was shortly after his son's death.. it's very subtle but you can hear a little less spark in Vins play by play.. commentary, anecdotes etc.. can't imagine how much courage it had to take to suck it up and still be the best broadcaster in baseball

    I used to catch Jazzbeaux back in the 80's when he was on WNEW from midnight to 6. It was an enjoyable way of passing the night hours and one of the last radio sources of jazz/big band music at that time. It's interesting to see how he appears on video. Always a laid back way of handling chaos. "...welcome to those of you who've tuned in by accident, because this is one of those shows you can't find when you're looking for it..." Thanks for posting this.
