Cow Therapy
Program Notes:
My dad’s side of the family lives on a farm in the Florida panhandle and raises cows on their pasture. My aunt Jamie visits them every day, spending time with the curious, silly, playful animals. She calls this her “cow therapy”, and that was all I needed to come up with the piece. It draws on the quirky, angular noodling of Art Tatum in the midst of a bouncy stride accompaniment. Cow Therapy was composed as part of a collaboration with the Jacobs piano department, and I’m grateful to Chenchun Ma for lending her sense of humor and effortless elegance to the piece.

Finding Parking, for string trio
มุมมอง 22หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: There is so much to be angry about in our world that it can be stifling to try channeling that anger artistically. I decided to start small, and work my way up. This piece is about all the little frustrations of our daily lives: slow internet when assignments are due, Kroger being out of the one thing you went there to get, and finding parking at Indiana University at 10:30am on ...
Daydreams of Violet the Dog, for woodwind quartet
มุมมอง 33หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: This piece was commissioned by the Ultraviolet Wind Quartet. Their modern-sounding name actually is inspired by one member’s dog, Violet. Never to miss a chance to compose joyful, whimsical music, I took Violet on a series of adventures, some real and some imagined. It is at times tender, playful, heroic, and a little ominous, but never fear: she will always make it back home, to...
Prayer for Rain, for mixed chorus
มุมมอง 41หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: I love the rain, and I will never tire of writing music about it. The text and music for this piece, however, were conceived during a particularly horrible summer of wildfires in California. It is, on the surface, a description of the beauty and comfort of experiencing a thunderstorm inside one’s own home, but it is also a very real prayer for rain for my home state, which has be...
Extension, for solo flute, live electronics, and AI
มุมมอง 23หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: The nn~ object in Max/MSP uses a machine learning algorithm to recreate sound from samples given to it in a data set. When I approached Robin Meiksins about the idea for this piece, she suggested using the audio from her many flute lectures and improvisations on TH-cam as the data to train the AI algorithm. Much of the electronic sound of Extension comes from that algorithm, whic...
Tropospheres II. As Above, Snow Below
มุมมอง 25หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: The troposphere is the layer of the Earth’s atmosphere where weather occurs. This piece began as an homage to three climates I love: the rainy Pacific Northwest, the quiet snows of the Black Forest, and the blistering sunny summers of Sacramento. This is only a performance of the second movement, which contains images of footsteps in snow, dripping faucets, and the grandeur of a ...
Tom Jones' Damnation
มุมมอง 54หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: Upon watching the 1963 film Tom Jones, starring a young Albert Finney, I was both amused and appalled. The bulk of the plot centers around a young rake’s series of romantic escapades, while a woman who loves him follows his trail, attempting to find him and profess that love. He is arrested for a surprisingly non-lecherous crime and is set to be hanged when it is revealed he was ...
Confluence, Discovery, for horn, cello, and piano
มุมมอง 42หลายเดือนก่อน
Program Notes: The confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers occurs near Discovery Park in Sacramento. One is bright blue and sparkling, while the other is dark, muddy and opaque. This piece, commissioned by Tyler Goodwin-Souffront, begins with a music box piano and a lyrical soli line that eventually diverges to become a playful dialogue. This progresses to a portrait of the second rive...
Isaac Smith - Prelude (After Duke). for Brass Quintet
มุมมอง 2.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This original piece is inspired by Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss", a tune I hold dear. In "Prelude (After Duke)", I've used different elements of that tune to create my own harmonies, textures, and emotional headspaces. It's a bit mysterious! Like Duke's music, it's more complex than it seems on the surface. However, there are plenty of moments of tenderness and exuberance that I feel emb...
Istanbul (Not Constantinople) Mashup: They Might Be Giants vs. The Four Lads
มุมมอง 13K3 ปีที่แล้ว
When I was researching They Might Be Giants' hit "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)", I found out it's actually a cover! The Four Lads, a vocal quartet, recorded the original in 1953. The original has a groovy slow latin beat, but I also love the frantic goofy swing of They Might Be Giants' version, so I mashed them up! Enjoy! Music for sale at my website: isaacsmith.me/store DISCLAIMER: I pre-reco...
Ievanman (Wellerman Sea Shanty and Ievan Polkka)
มุมมอง 405K3 ปีที่แล้ว
There have been a couple of viral music trends I've enjoyed recently: the TikTok mashup of the sea shanty Wellerman, and the resurgence of an old Finnish polka called "Ievan Polkka", played by a blind Turkish drummer and accompanied by a "vibing cat". Both are earworms, and I thought, "Hey, what if they went together?" This was the result: two meme songs for one! I had a lot of fun with this on...
Isaac Smith - How Can I Keep From Singing?
มุมมอง 4.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
"How Can I Keep From Singing?" is an American Baptist hymn composed by Robert W. Lowry around the year 1869. Its lyrics talk about how it's both joyful and necessary to make music when the world is suffering. It reminds me of a quote by Leonard Bernstein: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." In 2020, the many chal...
The Place I'll Return To Someday, by Nobuo Uematsu
มุมมอง 2.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
If you'd like to know how I recorded or filmed this, please let me know in the comments! I'd be happy to make a tutorial! Final Fantasy IX is one of my all-time favorite games. As a kid, seeing the incredible graphics of the opening cutscene with this haunting recorder trio made me want more than anything to pursue music as a career. I even did an arrangement of this tune for my senior project ...

I love it. Not that hard to do if you have the right software. Probably used blue screen and repositioned chair separated not to overlap. Then each part and background is on separate layer in software. If needed tempo can be adjusted in each layer. Then reprocessed to join the layers. Good job. And excellent brass musician.

I'm gonna guess you're playing a (l-r) l horn, tuba, euphorium, trombone, trumpet. No knowledge, just instruments I've heard and guessing. Nice segue though. Wellerman a bit dated now, the guy didn't kick on from his moment of fame

Actually it sounds better when played a slightly faster rate since when I leave it at normal it sounds a bit slow to me. I increased the the playback speed up to 1.25 instead of a Normal so now it sounds more like a true polka to me. For best result for the final portion of the music, I increased the playback speed of 1.25 at 1:22 frame.
