New Orchestral Template: Loading Instruments (Order, Configurations, Negative Delays, Triggering)
Hello everyone! Welcome back to the large orchestral template series. This series is specifically designed to increase writing speed, versatility, clarity, and tweakability. In this episode we'll begin the arduous task of loading instruments. Some of the topics I'll cover include creating a new template file, deciding on instruments used, setting up the instrument order, taking inventories, choosing libraries, single vs. multi articulations, instrument latencies, negative track delays, articulation triggering methods (velocity/keyswitches/MIDI channels/program change messages/CC messages/expression maps/color), installing and using scripts, defining a consistent articulation order, loading instruments, track vs. rack configuration, the advantages and disadvantages of each configuration method, and a bonus tip! I hope you enjoy it!

Thank you for this!
Very informative video. Thank you for sharing! If I may ask, how do you tackle the issue where when a midi or instrument track's midi channel is set to "Any", ramps and curves can't be used in the controller lanes? Do you just use multiple points?
I don't set any of my tracks to the Any configuration, each different articulation has a different midi channel and shorts are governed by velocity
@@sonicconceptsmedia3892 That's how I've set up my template too. But how cool would it be not to have that limitation! Another issue that I've encountered is when multiple notes are simultaneously sent to different midi channels. VDC doesn't seem (yet) to be able to handle them. So if you need e.g. legato strings and staccato played at the same time, you need a second kontakt instance.Despite all that, it's very promising.
Brilliant! :)
Thank you Don 🙂

I have read many times that Allan was influenced by Ollie Halsall and so was Alvin Lee.

@@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios I don't understand. This is just optimizing Cubase
@@sonicconceptsmedia3892 Apologies for my lack of clarity. The reason which I found this video was a search on orchestral templates. The reason i'm searching is because I can't find any cubase orchestral templates which demonstrate use of stock reverb plugins which is becoming very frustrating. So, I would love it if you could share some stock reverb settings to be used with orchestral templates for us noobs.
@@sekritskworl-sekrit_studios unfortunately I do not use stock reverb plugins. I'm not against them, I just don't use them, sorry
Here's the main difference.... Allan created a sound and entire music theory that NEVER happened before. Bill Connors would NOT sound like he does if he hadn't heard Allan first. I can understand that he loved Holdsworth and was influenced by him but if there was no Allan then Bill would NOT have come up with this. Bottom line is Holdsworth created an entire futuristic music theory and Bill was one of the earliest adopters to learn this theory. I can only WISH that I could learn that theory as well as Bill did. BUT.... there is only one Allan Holdsworth and everyone else is just a simplistic copy.
Thanks! I remember Allan mentioning Steve. Now I finally hear him, thanks! I brought Allan some English ales to a gig in NY State, so we got to hang with him between sets. He was quite shy(!) but very nice. He played like a demon!
Yes!!! Most innovative guitarist in history IMHO. Thanks for the comment!! ☺️

It was great hearing your perspective on these players. I love Alan Holsworth, but I also love Bill Connors. I’m surprised you didn’t play the Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy album when he had Captain Señor Mouse solo on there which I think is incredible. Definitely combination of both players, but like you said, and I agree, Bill Conners has his own silence sound but he did go from hard-core electric guitar playing to classicalacoustic guitar playing and back-and-forth I think because he just is such a serious Musician. He just wants to keep learning new things techniques, etc. were musicians that were allowed to be heard like it was at that time today what an inspiration they were and still are.
I agree! Thank you for the comment 😊
My favorites by Bill were two early solo projects for ecm, Theme to the Guardian and Of Mist and Melting. Swimming with a Hole in my Body is good too.
Good stuff! I'll check them out, thanks for the tip! 🙂
8:15 shifting ahead of beat 10:29 negative track delays (offsets for different articulation) 13:05 independent articulation per track 13:53 triggering choices 14:17 velocity triggering 15:15 problem with key switching on same midi track 16:40 lots of midi tacks for each articulation and effect (cons) 16:55 changing midi channels via key switch solution (ks router) 19:42 minus delay plugin
I'm still going through this but ran into confusion around the channel changes. I am not sure how to trigger the changes. I get how to set up the plug-in. I have the outputs routed correctly and I do understand how each of them have their own effects. But I just do not understand the triggering. Am I supposed to use a midi device other than a keyboard to trigger these changes?
@@AcousticBruce Sorry, just saw this. Are you talking about Program Change messages? Or changing MIDI channels?
@@sonicconceptsmedia3892 probably both because I have no idea what either of them are. One thing I do know though is in contact. Sometimes the libraries have special keys that might be start on a low C, d and e key and this would change the articulation of the instruments. Is that what you mean by a key change or are there other ways?
Noob here. What is the purpose of six horns halves, quarters, eighths and so on? Isnt that just a duration held of a key?
These are the note duration articulations offered by the Cinebrass sample library (specific to that library) 😉
@@sonicconceptsmedia3892 that helps. Thank you for that.
@@AcousticBruce You are very welcome! I hope you will consider subscribing if you haven't already. All the best to you
However, there are various environments where this example cannot be applied, so it may still be best to create a separate track per articulation.
Interesting. Perhaps you might explain a scenario where this might be true and I can explain how I might solve it using this template?

Allan was influenced by Bill not the other way around. John was first fusion school by of guitarist soloing like Coltrane. Progressive rock woke up to fusion jazz and call it innovation.
Not sure if I agree with you. I believe Bill sounded a lot different with RTF before he was aware of Allan but perhaps other people here have a better historical perspective than I have, hopefully they'll have something to say to back it up. At any rate, I believe Bill had his own thing that was clearly distinguishable from Allan to the point that I would never mistake one for the other 😁

recently posted on FB Jazz rock fusion group: comments on Alan saying : “I liked Bill Connors when he sounded like Bill Connors.” so, I was up close and personal, friends w band members, w the first RTF gigs w Billy in May 1973, 4 days in Boston. He was a revelation after my mentor Larry Coryell and J McLaughlin, BOTH could not bring the Claptonesque arena rock panache and blues drenched sweet vibrato Billy had. Like many guitarist friends in 1974, was very disappointed when Billy left (got fired actually, but probably would have qui anyway ) and decided to go from maybe the premier guitar gig in large stadiums w Chick to playing tiny coffee houses and bars on nylon string trying to emulate Julian Bream (a pretty ambitious and noble task in itself!) .. I do remember those articles, the blind shootout thing in downbeat, etc where other players like Abercombie, etc. sort of gave Billy shit about adopting a Holdsworth focused style. In Billy's defense, at that time no one else had the balls to try to do it! McLaughlin stated many times he had no idea what Alan was doing. I MUCH preferred Bill's earlier style 1973-74, but, similar to C Parker, at first no one had the balls to try to follow that, but w a year or so there was a whole school of Charlie Parker clones starting up the bebop revolution. Years after Bill, several ex tapper - shredders gone fusion finally started putting AH motifs in their playing, but Bill did it first. That comment of Alan's was a bit of a dick move IMHO, instead of just wishing him the best as an elder player who Bill was CLEARLY an admirer of. Alan of course had a rep for being very difficult and a somewhat arrogant loner, one of the many reasons he never made money playing w other players of his level.
Many good points here! Thanks for the comment 🙂
Thank you, Man!

Your tutorials are great because they proceed carefully step-by-step. For Spitfire, especially strings, do you not turn off those articulations you know you won't be using? EW Opus has this capability as well. My machine just as 32GB RAM. I get a few hiccups. I keep meaning to add a couple more sticks for 64GB. Can't imagine how great 256GB would be, but maybe it's time to look into that --
I appreciate your kind words Douglas, here as well as on the template set up video, thank you! As far as Spitfire, yes, I turn off articulations if I don't use them, you are correct. I can tell you that it's truly wonderful having all that horsepower at my disposal, especially after coming from a 64 gb machine with a quad core! Best to you my friend 🙂
I somewhat agree with Nick... I like some of Bill's material, but it's in no shape or way similar to Allan's work. There is no comparison!
Yup! 💯👍

So whatever technology is applied it still isn’t working the way it would if you jest move the notes or score in Dorico to begin with.
Not sure what you mean. Using the VDC allows you to set different delays for different articulations; for example, short notes like staccatos have an almost immediate response with very little delay while legato patches have legato scripting which has much more delay 👍
@@sonicconceptsmedia3892 This seems al lot of calculating and guessing. When I just move the noes in Cubase to align them by ear and apply some negative delay manually, that works fine, and when I import the midi into Dorico I can quantize on import all the notes end up in the right place and everything sounds wonderful. As far as I can tell all the automation workflows you presented, they all have flaws and music making is something you by ear and hands and a human touch and slight discrepancies ad to the humanity of the piece I think. But maybe I just don't understand, although I am a software developer 🙂
@@homeofcreation it's all about setting it once and forgetting it so you can focus on music only. You can also convert midi to audio so you can visually see where the main part of the notes start in relation to the grid
@@homeofcreation Like you said, manually moving around notes and the various articulations to make them sound correctly is certainly a pragmatic and direct approach. Yes it's tedious, but then again, you didn't have to spend 20 years learning to play a French horn. But, beyond that, you have to wonder why the big sample library companies don't create their samples so they'll play on time and automatically fix other inconsistencies up front in the first place before releasing them? It's like they're selling a product that's going to need to be repaired before it's usable.
Having all of the music releases by both Allan Holdsworth & Bill Connors I can honestly say neither sounds like the other & those who feel Bill Connors was intentionally trying to rip off Allan Holdsworth’s guitar style back in the late ‘80s on the three albums he released need their hearing checked. Bill Connors’ music has always been more approachable than that of Allan Holdsworth over the years for listeners who are not into jazz or fusion & Bill Connors’ three late ‘80s releases (“Step It”, “Assembler”, & “Double Up”) are much easier listens than some of the material Allan Holdsworth was releasing at that same time much of which was recorded on the synth axe. Both had their own distinct styles & Bill Connors didn’t need to copy anyone. While not well known outside the jazz fusion community his work with Chick Corea’s first guitar powered version of his band Return To Forever is very influential, even if many recognize Al DiMeola as RTF’s guitarist more so than they do Bill Connors’ short stint preceding Al DiMeola’s time in the band. The “Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy” album, the only RTF album featuring Bill Connors on guitar has probably been more influential than the three albums Al DiMeola recorded with RTF also. Those who believe Bill Connor’s was copying Allan Holdsworth are probably the same yo yos who always say Robin Trower has been copying Jimi Hendrix throughout his career hen Robin Trower sounds nothing like Jimi Hendrix at all. ’
I agree, I can definitely hear the difference between the two 👍

If you read between the lines, Allan must have thought Bill was trying to sound like him. At the time, hardly anyone knew what the hell Allan was doing, so for Bill to come out with a similar approach was interesting. I liked Bill's albums, so I'm not ripping on him. But the influence seems fairly apparent.
I agree 💯. It definitely sounds like Bill was influenced by Allan, particularly in regards to the legato technique. That being said, I certainly think Bill had enough of his own thing. Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated 😊👍
Very interesting, nice work, cheer's
Thank you 😊
Great Job of Mockup! Just remember that this is FUNEBRE introspective music. Grave and Slower tempo to signalize pain. But not so slow that the early music dance character gets lost. K.r.
I've been messing and doing so plenty of research this last months, along with trying most of this alternatives you're showing here, but on Studio One. I just wish I had crossed your video earlier lol. Little tip, I movede EVERY KS to C-2, including the low instruments, and mapped everything to a separate MIDI controller (in my case Nanokontrol studio with 32 spare buttons, but any one could do trick) and now working towards the completion of the table as you did (it's insane we were doing the same steps all this time) and also creating S1 macros that work with the same buttons as the KS but on a different scene of the MIDI controller, that work for automatically assigning that articulation to selected notes. Only thing I have holding me back and want to ask. VDC stops my KS from working correctly, they only "come through" if I bypass it. Sound Variations (S1 term for Expression Maps) work perfect on play but not on idle when VDC is active. Do you have that same issue?
Glad you liked the video. I have not found the same issues you are having so I cannot help you in this regard. I know there's a new version of the VDC so perhaps that version will solve your problem? Hope so...at any rate, thanks for watching and if you find videos like this useful I hope you will consider subscribing if you haven't already. Best to you 🙂
