Loy Krathong Thailand 🇹🇭 E29
#Join us on a celebration in Isan for Loy Krathong. Loy Krathong, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of Thailand's most enchanting and popular celebrations. Traditionally held on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month (usually in November), the festival is a time for Thai people to express gratitude to the water spirits and seek forgiveness for any harm done to rivers and waterways.
The centerpiece of Loy Krathong is the floating of krathongs, which are beautifully decorated floating baskets made from banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense. These krathongs are released onto rivers, lakes, and other water bodies, creating a breathtaking spectacle as they gently float away with the current. The act symbolizes letting go of negative energy and expressing good wishes for the future.
In addition to krathong floating, Loy Krathong is celebrated with various cultural events, including traditional dances, parades, and firework displays. Many people also participate in the ritual of releasing khom loi, or sky lanterns, into the night sky, adding to the overall magical ambiance of the festival.
Loy Krathong is not only a time for reflection and spiritual activities but also a celebration of Thai culture and community. The festival attracts both locals and tourists alike, fostering a sense of unity and joy as people come together to honor nature and celebrate the beauty of Thai traditions.

Hi! I am curious if the cruise told you the transfer trip would be 2-2.5 hours? I am looking to book this same trip and the representative told me 2-2.5 hours (taking the Hanoi-Haiphong Highway, which is a faster toll road), but i am apt to believe your video when you said it was closer to 4-5 hours. there are a lot of cruises offering the shorter transfer, and I will pick another one if this one doesnt actually take the shorter route like you mention. any other info is much appreciated! thanks for the great video!

Yeah we were not prepared for the long transfer trip. Perhaps if you are the last one to be pick up it's not so back. Be aware they stop at a pearl farm which did take about 30 minutes. Thank you so much for watching our video and taking the time to comment. We do hope you enjoy your cruise.

On the way back from the Grand Palace, the bridge is Rama VIII, not Rama IX. After that it is The Memorial Bridge. The bridge was the first bridge across Chao Phraya River built about 100 years ago. It was a steel bridge whose middle span could be raised to allow Navy ship to sail towards the former Navy headquarters at King Taksin's Palace near Wat Arun. Later the Navy built a big pier at the mouth of Chao Phraya River and there was no need for the navy ship to come to the headquarter anymore, thus this bridge's middle spans were no longer raised for the last 40 years. I should know because I studied at Suan Kularb school at the foot of the bridge from 1965-69 and saw the bridge raised a few times. The school is the oldest government school in Thailand built during King Rama V reign. Its 2-storey yellow building was/is the longest 2-storey building in Thailand. Since then a parallel bridge with 6 lanes was built and a few decades ago. Then a few years ago the skywalk garden was built in the middle of this new bridge at the former abandoned railway track. It is the great place to relax, watching sun set while drinking a Thai beer. Meanwhile, you can also visit the Flower Market, just opposite Suan Kularb School. Around 9 pm till early in the morning, all types of flowers were trucked in, sorted and arranged to be sold either retail or wholesale. The Flower Market never dies, the business is run 24 hours/7 days per week.

Bangkok's Grand Palace was built in the style of Ayutthaya Grand Palace with a royal temple inside reserved only for the King and relatives to hold Buddhist ceremony. Since the temple is in the Grand Palace there is no monk living in the temple. It is only the functional temple in Thailand that has no monk resides in. Monks from temples nearby are usually invited when the King performs Buddhist ceremony. It is a tradition that any novice who passes the highest Pali Grade 9 language proficiency will be royally patronaged and ordained into monkhood in this Emerald Buddha temple. Pali is the language spoken during the Buddha's era. Buddhist Dharma was originally transmitted by Pali oral tradition (still practiced even today when monks cite Pali sutra every morning and evening) but later transcribed into Pali alphabets, similar to Sanskrit which is the main language of Hinduism. There is a nationwide exam conducted annually to assess Pali proficiency and few novices/monks pass Grade 9 language each year, normally fewer than 10. So you can imagine how hard it is. At the Grand Palace, you can see Garudas (mythical flying deity) grab Nagas (mythical serpent-like deity living underworld). They are sworn mortal enemies in Hindu and Buddhist legends. However, both are God Vishnu's mounts. When travelling, God Vishnu mounts on Garuda. When resting in the sea, God Vishnu lays on bed transformed from Naga's body. Garuda is a sacred deity in Thailand and Indonesia. Thus Indonesia National Airlines is "Garuda" while Thailand's official emblem is Garuda which is affixed in front of official paper and shown on Royal Announcements on Thai TVs. Naga is sacred deity in Thailand and Laos as protector of the Lord Buddha. Temples in the Thailand's North and Laos often feature 2 Nagas at the front leading the steps into the temple. Standalone Naga is featured prominently along Mekong River on both sides of Thailand and Laos as well. Here is the full name of Bangkok. Krungthep Mahanakorn Amorn Rattanakosin Mahintra Yuttaya Mahadilokpop Noparat Burirom Udom Rachnivet Mahasathan Amornpimarn Avartarnsathit Sakkatiya Witsanukamprasit Here is my rough translation. Krungthep the motropolis, the royal capital of Ratanakosin dynasty following Ayutthaya dynasty, a grand palace resided by God King.

Traditional Thai costumes seen at Wat Arun are hi-so and usually worn by wives of high officials at former occasions such as Royal Ballroom celebration at Government House or at Official New Year's morning merit making presided by Thai prime minister/wife as well as cabinet ministers/wives. Woman also wears traditional Thai dress during wedding ceremony while Thai man usually wears western suit or white formal uniform if being civil servant. Legend states that when King Taksin, at the time Ayutthaya mandarin, led some troops to break the Burmese siege of Ayutthaya and arrived at this old temple at dawn, so the temple was then named Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). After Ayutthaya fell after one-year siege, he led troops from Chanthaburi province to expel the occupied Burmese troops in Ayutthaya. Then he proclaimed himself King and moved the capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi and built a royal palace adjacent to Wat Arun and this temple then became the Royal Temple within the Palace domain in line with Ayutthaya tradition. The same could be said about King Rama I when he moved the capital from Thonburi across the Chao Phraya River and built Emerald Buddha Temple within the Grand Palace. When Thonburi was still a distinct province before it was dissolved to form Bangkok metropolis about 50 years ago, Thonburi's symbol was Phra Prang (Stupa) of this temple. Phra Prang is lit at night and can be seen from tour boats or roof-top bars on the opposite side of Chao Phraya River.

Singha beer in brown bottle was introduced/produced into Thailand about 100 years ago using German recipe by King Rama VI court official Pirompakdi family ancestor. It was highly appreciated by both Thai and expat drinkers. Even though other local brand was introduced one or another but could not shake Singha's dominance and died away until Thai Beverages, the largest and most dominant liquor producer (mostly rum and white spirit) in Thailand, decided to partner with Carlberg to produce the brand locally to compete with Singha. It also resulted in a failure to challenge Singha. Both sides gradually drifted apart and Carlberg was eventually no longer produced locally. Before the final breakup, Thai Beverages introduced Chang (Elephant) beer in green bottle, which was much cheaper to gain market share from Singha. It was successful in a few years after heavy promotion and discounted price, and became No.1 seller. This was the reason that Carlberg decided to quit the Thai market as it seemed its Thai partner did not care to promote Carlberg anymore after Chang beer was successfully introduced. Singha did not give in and introduced Leo in brown bottle at the same price of Chang and it instantly became a success as well. Now, Chang and Leo are neck and neck, dominating local Thai beer market. Owners of Chang/rum/white spirit and Singha/Leo are Thai billionaires.

Where were you staying? Old District of Hanoi to Ha Long Bay is a two-and-a-half hour drive! Anyway, did a 3D/2N on Mon Cherie in early November. It was...underwhelming. Ha Long Bay is seriously overcrowded and ALL the boats follow each other and do the same activities at the same time. I counted 17 boats near us on the first night and 18 the second. Further, "cruise?" We ("us") were only underway, briefly, after picking up passengers or moving to a location to dump them off. I'd estimate we were actually moving less than 30 total minutes for the entire 3D/2N voyage. In short, I tell people to save their money and do a day tour instead.

We stayed at the Pan Pacific in Hanoi, next to West Lake and Trúc Bạch Lake. We did the 2D/1N and find that it was perfect for us. We got lucky and our captain anchored in a secluded cove away from other boats.
