The Laser Beam Mode Burn Test
The Laser Beam Node Burn Test is a simple method to check the intensity of your laser beam. Find out if your tube is "blunt" or "sharp" with this simple test. Combining the laser beam mode burn test with a Mahoney laser power meter will allow you to fully check the performance of your laser tube.
Please note: this test requires a degree of competence and confidence and you carry out the test at your own risk. Ensure you comply with all relevant safety requirements

    was you over driving the laser at 59% power?..how much current in miliamps were being drawn?

      Hi Rat8356, 59% power on my laser system equates to 19mA, which is the maximum working current recommended for the tube.

      I have a generic 50W Chinese laser with a 300 x 500mm bed. It's actually the same system as used in the Tangerine Tiger video series by Russ Sadler on Sarbar Multimedia. It can also be found at laseruser.com/rf-laser-source-upgrade-tangerine-tiger-menu/

      What laser source is in the X1? Is it a blue diode? If so, I don't think you will be able to cut Mylar.

    In the full Session 27 - Laser Engrave Photo Replication Part 2 - Burning an Image, you showed a new nozzle for your air assist, blowing the dust sideways just above where it built. Does this work better? Is there further information on how this works in different situations engraving and cutting? Your videos are always very helpful, teaching the mechanisms helps a lot more to understand whats going on and do the right things :-)

    • @laseruser_com
      @laseruser_com ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Keksfabrik, Russ is currently on holidays. The sideways design was specifically to stop the air assist from blowing "sticky" fumes and residue from the laser process back onto the surface of the material. Blowing them sideways would give them enough time to cool and / or be removed by your extraction system. It would mainly be used for laser engraving as most cutting applications benefit from the air assist removing fumes / smoke from the laser path. Acrylic is an exception with regards to cutting, as the air assist can cool down the acrylic in the cut and reduce cutting performance. Hope that helps Gareth

    Where did you the board from? Or did you make one yourself ?

    • @laseruser_com
      @laseruser_com ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you are referring to the pin board? I made it myself using 6mm thick acrylic and cabinet dowel pins (with a central lip). It's not too bad to use but the acrylic is starting to warp a little. If I was doing it again, I would use straight pins so that the pin will be in contact with my steel bed and won't be affected by warping of the base.

    can you cut through 9mm and 12mm MDF sheets too with a 50w laser?

    • @laseruser_com
      @laseruser_com ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi NYSee Sorry for the delay in responding, just recovering from a bout of Covid. I'm totally sure I could cut through 9mm MDF using my 50W laser source and 2" lens, as I can already cut 10.5mm thick acrylic and the cutting performance is comparable. 12mm may be a little bit too much for the 2" lens, but I have a new 2.5" GaAs lens that I believe would allow the 50W laser source to cut through it. If you want to read more about choosing the appropriate lens then this article by Russ Sadler called Lens Performance Comparison Data (laseruser.com/what-is-the-best-laser-lens-to-use/) may be of some interest. All the Best Gareth

    That's got to be the cleanest cut without edge burring that I've ever seen from a laser cutter. I would imagine that the smoke could be a problem!

    • @garethlewis828
      @garethlewis828 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, the cut is so clean because I used the pre-ionization zone of the laser. There is a lot of smoke generated, but I had to keep the lid partially open in order to record the video. Normally, the smoke will be whisked away by the air flow across the work piece.

    That is a lot of smoke. How do you deal with it?

    • @laseruser_com
      @laseruser_com ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately laser cutting or engraving MDF does generate a lot of sticky smoke that will quickly block any extraction filters. In the video it actually looks worse because I had the lid partially open to do the filming, which reduced the effectiveness of the extraction fan and air flow across the work piece. Normally the extraction fan will whisk away the smoke as soon as it is generated, this also has the benefit of minimising the amount of smoke particulates falling and condensing on the surface of the work piece. I've set up my laser chamber so that there is an air flow across the top and bottom surfaces of the work piece. I have a solid mild steel bed which stops air being pulled through the bed. I have also made curtains at the back of the bed to the base of the laser machine to ensure air flow is concentrated above the bed. Hope that helps.
