Which fountain pen from each brand would I keep?
Thanks to @ChrisSaenz13 for the great idea! And according to her video description, the idea came from Rachel Delafuente's blog: racheldelafuente.com/blog/only-keep-one/
If I had to choose just one fountain pen of each brand, which one would I keep and why? This was fun to think about! Especially for those few brands that I have a bunch of different pens. Curious to see what others come up with! #onefountainpenperbrand
(Sorry, forgot to increase the resolution and really don't want to redo it. I promised myself to not be a perfectionist with those videos, otherwise, I would never upload a video ever again!)
Brands mentioned:
Lamy
Pelikan
Leonardo
Pilot
Benu
Esterbrook
Franklin Christoph
Opus 88
Kaweco

Very good video. No idea i could change the ink in my preppy. Thatks for the tip
Beautiful collection! I hope mine gets this plentiful someday
😇🩷🙏🙌
Grew up writing with fountain pens then stopped for several decades. Now I'm back I ave four rules 1; I Have to LOVE USING IT BECAUSE a gorgeous b love the nip 2; Style / Aesthetics have to fit function; Daily Contemplation about living my best life - the pen is so beautiful - stupidly expensive but I put it on the list my husband asked for - for a big birthday. Because of 3 I will try as many as necessary; with this one the company's superb in person customer service and reasonable policies qllowed me to try 2 others before settling on the original 3 Customer service return policy, company's reputation have to be good. and 4 I am willing to try and return repeatedly until I am sure it is right - people who do not realize what filing, using and restoring a fountain pen to as new for return need to know about this read the return policy closely and see how Easy one can get someone qt the company on the phone from customer service.meek....love your channel looking forward to learning more G
Nice pen and nice ink, Simone! Enjoy!!!
Great video and takes. All these discussions recently only show how different we are in our preferences and tastes. And in that regard - if you want to let go of that white Benu you don't love (Cookies & Cream Milkshake, was it?)... Please let me know. I found it too late and by the time i got the funds to get it, it was gone out of stock and never re-stocked.
Fun video, thanks for posting. For me the brand with the widest variety that I own is Kaweco. I ended up picking the Special, with a BB nib.
This was so much fun!!! And I'm very glad to find your channel!!! A lot of people have mentioned to me that I'd like a Leonardo - I do intend to learn about them! They look expensive but to be honest I've yet to "price" them. :) Esterbrook is another brand I have yet to try! I also had trouble choosing between Pilots so ultimately I just went with the one that will hold my favorite CM nib lol. Thank you for mentioning in your comment over on my channel that you did this video!!!! :)
So fun to watch!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks - you just sent me down that rabbit hole too! I love specialty nibs and have several custom grinds done after I purchased the pens. I also have an F-C pen with a SIG grind, and probably my favorite everyday pen is my Estie with the journaler nib.
There are always new rabbit holes to discover!! Oh, how does the journaler nib compare to the SIG one? I got the SIG one and I really didn't like it at first. But inked it up again with a different ink and now really love it. I have been thinking about getting the journaler nib to make my Estie's a bit more interesting, so curious to hear how they compare!
Loved this video! And I laughed at how fast you were able to sort through your pens so quickly. You are a quick decision maker. I am not so quick.
Glad you enjoyed it! I definitely thought about it all day long, and had some decisions already made in my head. But I was trying to just go with my gut rather than overthinking it. The only one I am second guessing and still churning in my head is the Pilot one…. :-)
What a fun video! ❤ I would also choose my Lamy 2000 from my collection. It’s a no brainer for sure! Thanks for sharing! 😊
Thank you! Yeah, the Lamy 2000 out of my Lamy’s was the easiest decision of them all!
@@Minminionspensandinks ☺
Hi! This was fun, thank you! You can get rid of the squeaking on the OPUS 88 or any pen with a touch of silicone grease. Great choices by the way and I really enjoyed the „why I‘m choosing this pen“!
Glad you enjoyed my random ramblings about the why’s!
Correct answer for Pilot was Falcon. ;) The Leonardo's are amazing-absolution granted. Lilliput is the best Kaweco. Especially that one.
I don’t even own a Prera so not sure why my brain offered that 😂. I respectfully disagree about the Lilliputian, I love the feel and look of it and I think it’s the cutest pen, it’s just too small for my hands to write with.
I loved this video! I think the Franklin Christoph nib units screw in and out, so it would be easy to swap the nibs in your two pens.
I know! And I might actually swap them. I was imagining having to choose right in the spot 😜. But the easy nib swaps is one of the many things I lobe about the Franklin-Christoph’s
I'm trying to think which brands I have more than one of, lol. I have a few Preppies and they're all pretty similar, but the blue preppy wa I got is pretty. I have a Pilot Petit1 and a Pilot Kakuno and I like them both. Might go with the Petit1 just because it's been discontinued!
Oh I like the discontinued argument!!
I spent a lot of time on Team Pilot Petit1. Then I switched to using and loving a set of Parallels. Now it's an older Custom 67, for its Coarse nib. It has the biggest nib I've found that is still round, not stubbed out.
🐢❤️🐢
Let me know if you need help with the vintage Pelikan, a local friend here in New Mexico is specialized in the repair of them! Also I hope you’ll check out my currently inked with my Pelikan 400 with an OB nib - I soooo love it too! Viele Grüße Dag 🙌🏻🖋🌸
Good to know! Shipping makes me super nervous though....That is the trade-off. Will check out your video and see your Pelikan 400!!
@@Minminionspensandinks I know exactly what you mean about shipping! I have to send to Joel even though he’s in state, but I’d hate to imagine what could happen - my last package had 11 pens!…
great collection
Thanks! I really want to spend a bit more time with each pen and enjoy what I have!
For cleaning the Pelikan I would consider getting an ultrasonic cleaner. They are surprisingly inexpensive.
I keep thinking about getting one! Just not sure if the cleaning would actually make it possible to remove the nib safely without damaging the feed....
Lovely Pelikan you have there.
I agree! I love thinking where that pen has been before, and all the hands it had been in. The big reason why I love vintage pens!
@@Minminionspensandinks indeed it’s like having a handful of history.
I missed your videos!!!! Yay for this! These are gorgeous pairings. The golden lapis is stunning!
Thank you so much!! So nice to read that after this mostly unintentional break!
Nice. Glad you like your new pen.
What a beautiful pen! I haven't seen anyone with this colorway...Enjoy it!
I'm so thankful to have found this video, thank you! I'm going up to Kirk's place on Tuesday so I'm researching what I should have him work on for me! Thanks again!
So glad it was helpful! And what a treat to get to see him in person and get some nib work done. After trying various custom grinds, my personal favorite with my writing style is still his architect nib!
@@Minminionspensandinks I feel so lucky!! I can't wait!
Have you tried writing in the reverse with your imperial?
@@FountainPenNews I haven't! But now that I know that this is what the Imperial can do, I will try. Often the reverse is too fine for me. But should at least try it!
Your reaction to the initial unboxing and writing sampling was exactly the same as me. I got the PM 1 model. Took my breath away. Enjoy your new pen!
I just love how pens somehow ignite that pure awe in me. Probably why I have stuck with this hobby. Need to check your feed to spot your PM1!
Some lovely inks on show.
Thank you! I like them too! Especially the Dominant Industry exclusive to Wonderpens ones.
I have never bought from them.
I am in Canada and they are just around the corner (well for North American standards) from me! It’s on my bucket list for this year to go to their physical store!
Nice, however a little far for me as I live in England. However I can't wait to go to my first pen show this year.
Cool.
very cool, thank you for sharing these!
Glad you like them!
Wow, just wow, the FC 31 you got is absolutely stunning! And the inks, amazing. You kind of got me wanting to try a shimmering ink with your enthusiasm, haha. I usually stick to shading inks. I‘ve been wanting to try the Birminghams as well, but they’re still not available in Europe. Amazing haul! Looks like it’s time to put in a US order! Thanks for sharing!
This was great! I’ve long been interested in trying diff nibs and kind of shied away for. Doing so. The way you’ve done here it makes so much sense. I’m such a TWSBI fan, they are such a reliable pen for me that I think this is the way I will jump into the deep end of specialty nibs. Thank you!
Have you tried yet?
Grace @wildlyimaginable , I get to go to Kirk's place on Tuesday and have some work done on some of my pens! How lucky am I? What should I ask for ??
@@FountainPenNews What? What? What??? Dang lucky I say!!!! And, unfortunately, I haven't a clue what to ask for. I'm still new to pen nib grinds. There are a few folks who know so much more about this subject, including Kirk himself. I'd def go in with prepared questions for him.
@@Minminionspensandinks Not yet.. Got caught up in choosing pen colours believe it or not. 😆 On my list to finally get to these TWSBI pen purchases from Kirk in April tho.
@wildlyimaginable oh I believe it 😂😂
Loved these colors and your first turned pen. It's funny how all the ink colors you swatched are showing in the colors of your turned pen. Its so beautiful Enjoy it!
Thanks for the video. I am now interested in giving a try for a couple of eco pens as well!
Is rev reverse
Enjoying this video. Did you send your pens in to Kirk Spear?
I actually ordered the pens with the custom nibs from Kirk Speer. Sending my pens makes me nervous. Especially because they have to cross the border.
@@Minminionspensandinks I understand, I would be nervous also. Glad to know you can purchase pens from him vs having to send your pens in. He is supposed to be here in Houston later this week
Great show! At first, I thought that you were Simone', another youtube personality. You have similar sounding voices 😊
I know! She is from Germany and lives in the US and I am from Switzerland living in Canada. I love her channel!
fascinating that there is so much variety in nibs
It opens up an entirely new rabbit hole….And it’s a fun one!
Fun video to watch….interesting nibs! I also love the Ecos…I may get some of them ground! “Rev” means reverse…as in the reverse side of the nib. You can have nibs ground on the both sides. Like a cursive italic on one side and on the reverse a fine for example. Or sometimes depending on the grind, the reverse side writes differently. I noticed that you didn’t try writing on the reverse of that Round nosed nib…try it out and see!
Hi there! Your channel just showed up on my feed so I watched the video and subscribed. I thought I heard a German accent. I also enjoy TWSBIs, but my favorite pens atm are Italian pens. That cursive smooth italic grind sounds lovely! My first custom ground nib is on my Santini Libra Cappuccino - a medium cursive italic - that I really enjoy. Thanks for sharing! By the way, I‘m a German that grew up in the US (emigrated as a child) and returned to Germany later in life. My cursive is also a mix of both worlds.
Hi! You heard (almost) right. It’s a Swiss German accent. I did the opposite of you. Moved to Canada from Switzerland more than ten years ago. I love my Leonardo’s and Montegrappa’s a lot. What other Italian brands do you recommend?
I'm guessing "rev" refers to "reverse writing"? Lovely set of colors--I like that they all go together!
Yes rev. is a reverse grind, which is ground to provide a much better reverse writing experience than normal.
Yaaay someone from Canada! I hope? Born raosed in Toronto into adulthood, now live just out of Niagara Falls, Ontario.
I am close to Toronto and Canadian. But also Swiss. Immigrated to Canada almost 15 years ago. Meant to go back but that just never happened :-)
I look forward to when all of these get released to the Diamine collection next year and I can try a couple! There are definitely some cool colours.
Agreed!
Oooh I bet that pen goes beautifully with all of the inks you picked up. ❤ I'm only catching this video now but always love finding other Canadian pen and Stationery lovers!
I am having a hard time with this one in a pen. Clogs it up and very dry. I like the color. May try to use it with no shimmer.
Interesting! I thought it’s my pen, but maybe it’s the ink! Did you play with it some more?
Wow I love how you swatch them in different ways! Thank you for sharing! (I'll have to go back and do my own again 😁)
I think I will try Weeping Willow in a Pilot Falcon once I use up the current ink - to see if a more flexible nib can show off that ink... Rainbow's End is one of my favorites.
I just found your channel. Thank you for sharing all these swatches!
You are most welcome!
ooo, love the colour
I am still undecided on this one! Need to ink it up in a pen that is a better match to really decide.
The Weeping Willow ink is very beautiful and complex.........in the large swatches. You don't see the different colors that come out when you use it for writing, the width of the font isn't enough to get that gorgeous gradation. Maybe in one of those crazy wide poster nibs, but not just one of our regular fountain pen nibs in medium or even broad. Know what I mean? I am an artist and I use it for art, not writing!
Such a good point! I always only think of using them for writing. But could absolutely see how Weeping Willow would be a brilliant drawing ink!
No idea how I got here, but these look amazing! Nice!
Best comment :-)
