LAST SWIM AT NIGHTCLIFF BEACH 2024
A short video of my last swim at Nightcliff Beach for 2024. I take a quick walk along the rocks to check out the gravity defying tree battling erosion.
The end of September signals the arrival of the Box jellyfish. I do not want to tangle with one of those deadly creatures. Its a beautiful 26 degrees on a Sunday morning with a 7.4 metre high tide. I walked along the base of the small cliff to document the erosion prior to this years Monsoon season.

I take a quiet drive around the peaceful little town of Howard Springs. Whilst you cannot swim at the Springs anymore due to the sludge and algae build up it is a nice nature reserve. They have built a paddle stream for toddlers to cool off . The town site itself appears to be unchanged and the locals enjoy a relaxed life in a beautiful rural setting. #howardsprings #darwin #northernterritory #...

I still enjoy 35 mm photography. I am more considerate of the shot than when using my digital camera. The cost of the film and processing slows my shutter button finger somewhat. Its great to look at and think about pictures from years ago. I sold cameras for many years so i have a good idea of how they work. Unfortunately that does not make me a good photographer. My film camera is a Canon EOS...

Terrific watching you enjoy the water in Darwin - you really make the most of the place Gavin. I'm up there in a couple weeks - be great to grab a beer and catch up. Will be in touch, have a good one mate!
Sounds good Nic. Look forward to it.
Looks beautiful so calm and peaceful . We were yet again taking of trying to make a visit to Darwin after my 60th birthday last week I need to get on with it looks like a special place and certainly top of my bucket list 👍
A great place to visit Bigfoot. April to September is the best time weather wise. If you dont mind the heat and humidity come and join us anytime.
Why does it have to be your last swim ?😢
Only for 2024. The Box jellyfish is here now and can be deadly if i get stung. The water becomes warm, muddy and salty.
Darwin has some lovely beaches. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Great show!
Thanks Cody. Most of these vehicles were made in Australia. Sadly no longer.
Great tour through Howard Springs, lots of information and interesting context. So much housing growth in Darwin. Those GoPro batteries can be a struggle - do you use the blue ones or the white ones? Apparently the white ones are more hardy.
Thanks Nic. It was an original blue one. It has swollen so much it will not fit into the camera haha. The white one is doing fine.
So many new estates in Darwin, interesting to see and be orientated around this one. Thanks for the tour!
A good snap shot in time. A well planned out suburb.
Thanks for the look about really enjoyed it weather sounds wonderful I’m jealous lol .looks like Darwin’s starting to grow a little but at least there putting the structure in to deal cope with it ! We are just coming into our Autumn here in the Uk . The weather’s unsettled with temperatures of around 17 in the day going down to 5 ish at night ! I absolutely hate the cold and winter it seems to go on forever so we try to get away somewhere warm in January February time cheers all the best 👍
These semi rural areas will continue to grow as people want a certain lifestyle. After living in the north for so many years i feel your pain dealing with the cold.
Thanks for posting. As a past resident of Darwin, it is fascinating to see the spread of new suburbs. Impressive new shopping plaza and infrastructure. Yep, a gorgeous climate overall and the humidity, although a pain in the a.se at times, is what makes Darwin so unique. Your channel takes me right back there.👍👍
Thanks David. The climate is not for everyone haha. Many will leave over the next 2 months. I am lucky being a Rideshare driver i get to see all the changes around the place.
was at the very place you vlogged with my daughter 2 years ago...basically walked where i walked!she has moved to adelaide now...not happy!.. i preferred darwin..she does too..adeladie too cold...we both dont do cold... great vlog!
Thanks Ali. Its a very under rated spot. Its warming up as we get closer to the dreaded buildup. Feel free to come back for a visit to thaw the bones haha.
Mitchell Street sure has changed over the years.
It has and quite the party zone each evening. We have a huge Naval exercise going on this week. I fear we may run out of beer haha.
Hi. I was the viewer who asked you some time ago to check out Howard Springs. Thank you so much for taking the time to present such an awesome vid. I left Howard Springs in 1997 so yes, I see huge development in some ways. The growth of housing in the township area is huge as it is out of Palmerston. The Howard Springs nature reserve, in some respects, has hardly changed at all but has been improved in other ways. Many, many memories. As I used to live at Howard River Park, many evenings I would take my young son for a walk along the tracks at the reserve - magic. Huge thanks again for posting such a lengthy vid - very much appreciated!!
Sorry for taking so long David. I hoped the long slow drive around would be of interest. There is more expansion north east to the suburb of Herbert.
Great views of Howard Springs. The new homes and water towers. You could see the heat coming through your cars windscreen. And how dry the bush looked. Melbourne has had some shocking wind. My shed got demolished. Makes me miss the Top End. Thankyou for taking the time to film for us. Hope your go pro battery survived. Cheers.
We have been watching your wild weather on the news reports.Hopefully it settles over the coming weeks. The bush is very dry and we are still having big fires mostly with the Gamba grass. More people are choosing to live out rural now and i can see the attraction. Thankyou for watching. Cheers Gavin
Mate, so much delicious stuff there. Gotta love a VL Walky in a Group A livery. Looks like a great show!
It was a great representation of all the different motorsports in Darwin. I could have spent all day there haha.
Absolutely too good, loved it. I always feel like I get a real dose of Darwin in your vids mate, absolutely bang on - great stuff.
Its quite different to how it was in the 80,s but a great day out. It was awesome chatting to the guys from the WA wheatbelt.
I absolutely loved this video. I would love to attend a Pitch Black air show. It is disappointing that Harrier Jump Jet technology was never developed further with newer and more advanced planes ?
It has Ed. The Italians were here with the new F35 Jump jet. You can see it in my Mindil beach video at sunset.
You never mentioned the humidity. 25 degrees is very mild but what’s the humidity like? 100% I have only been in the dry season and it’s just perfect for me, as I don’t think I could handle 100% humidity. Nice video too, I still love Darwin .
High humidity is bearable when the temp is under 30 degrees. Dry season is still the best haha.
That Osprey is a cool weird machine love it . I used to live in Newbury Berkshire UK right next to the American Air base when I was a kid we used to ride our bikes to the perimeter fence and watch the planes and the air shows were brilliant. Im pretty sure it’s all been decommissioned now .
It requires special skills to fly it. We lost one here last here with the Marine contingent.
Its sad that Australia is being invaded and overrun by the US.
2:30 Looking forward to seeing the Globe Master and F/A 18 Hornet buzz Brisbane this weekend.
The Globemaster is an awesome beast in flight.
Great video as always. Love the open day. Highlight for pitch black.
So many aircraft from all over the world. Great to be able to see them up close.
@@darwininsights442 Did you get some patches from the crews?
@@DroneKingsInDarwin No i did not. A bit of trading going on tho haha. I might still have a chance
Interresting video! Thanks for that! Greetings from a sunny and warm THE NETHERLANDS! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
We have had over 140 military aircraft involved in this exercise. Quite extraordinary to watch and hear them take off and land. Darwin Airport has no curfew and no noise restrictions so a perfect opportunity for every one to test the capabilities of craft and crew.
Stinky!
Look like a great day out ! Lots to see 👍
It's a pitty it has come off as a clasic car show it was ment to be a all car show new and old jdm euro aus usa UK everything. (Thats what the organiser told me) hopefully they advertise it better next year then should be a big one.
Yep. I will definitely look forward to next years show.
Looks like such a lot of fun and the weather was perfect ! I must admit I always thought you had crocs in the water around Darwin but I don’t know why I think that as I’ve never been lol 👍
The weather is perfect until October then the monsoon season begins. Very Humid. We do have Crocs in the water however i have never seen one at my favourite swimming beaches.
I moved to Darwin in 2020... after living all my life in Melbourne. I was 73 then... Should had done it years ago.
Its a different vibe to the big cities. Glad you are happy here.
Great video mate, those photos were incredible. All that food looked absolutely fabulous. I don't think there's any difference between a yiros and a kebab apart from the name - but I could very well be wrong. Terrific video and great to see you the other day.
Thanks Nic. Amazing range of foods on offer. I look forward to our next catchup. 🍻
Those planes are awesome 👌I live in the UK near RAF Lynham in Wiltshire so we see lot of planes come and go there was an air show on recently in Faiford near Oxford and a spitfire activity done a barrel role over are house it was Awesome to see a spitfire let alone it doing that ! Sometimes there’s a Lancaster bomber that comes over to amazing planes. That market looks superb Im hungry now lol
We have a very multicultural market scene here in Darwin. Lots of spicy foods and lots of icy beers to wash it down haha.
Thanks for sharing. Do you remember the annual RAAF fly past at the Merredin Show ?
Yes i do Ed. Noisy skies. Were they F-1-11 or MIrages ?
@@darwininsights442 I think they were Macchi Training Jets ?
Looks like a great day.
It was well worth the effort to get out in the sunshine.
Thank you 🙏 so much for showing us around, to see how beautiful 😍 Darwin is 😊. I don’t mind the humidity much as I did some personal fitness in Bali during 36° 😅 outside my little hotel 😊👋
Thankyou for watching. Its Dry season now so the weather is perfect.
Some awesome machines!
Love you Darwin, Nightcliff beach is one of my favourite swiming area. I remember, the city council put stinger net around the swimming area. Me and my mate use to bbq under the rapicreek bridge with a few beers.
Thanks for watching and happy you enjoyed it. The stinger net eventually fell apart with the big tides. I still swim at Rapid creek, just love it at high tide.
Looks interesting 🧐 will watch it later
Part 2 is interesting when i find the stone carvings.
Absolute eye-candy mate, loved it - thanks for filming it, dream of owning too many of those.
Its surprising how many of these cars are still on the road.
Absolutely brilliant some fabulous cars 👍 makes my old ford streetka look a bit shameful lol
We were lucky to drive these great cars.
Memories from my youth in the 1970s. Wish I could have bought some of those beauties. I still want a Mustang even now. But the Dark Horse is over 100k. Have not seen one yet. That Cobra or the GTHO..wow.
We didn't know what the future would become. Some pretty amazing cars on show.
Great👌
I love how involved the V8 Supercars are with Darwin as a city. That opening minute was awesome!
Its a great atmosphere in town. People have flown in from all over.
Awesome some right tasty motors ! wish I could have been there it’s cold and raining here ..👍
I went out to the track today. Lots of categories racing at the same event. Nice 32 degrees.
Ha ha. When I saw the bonnets up I thought the police were doing road worthy checks.
A lot of them were overheating due to the speed limits. Not a problem today tho out at the track. A big crowd rolling in now as the Drag cars get ready for tonights show.
Hell yeah. This was awesome.
Legend, glad someone filmed and uploaded this. Got stuck at work and missed this
Cheers. It was an awesome sight and sound. Huge crowd at the driver signing in front of the Doubletree.
Some Raw footage i took this afternoon of the V8 Supercars cruising into Darwin city. Apparently an Australian first.
They did this recently for the NZ round. Thought it would be awesome for Darwin.
It was. Generated quite a buzz in the city.
That Norton was beautiful, and that RG500 - wow. The green LH Torana, just a piece of art - better than new, and I grew up in a green LJ like the one you showed - definately not with the triple carbys though heheh! Pretty crazy seeing a Ghostbusters Commodore heheh. Love these car/bike show vids, great one - cheers!
I met the guy that owns the RG500 a few days prior to the show. He told me all about it haha. We have the Ford car show on Monday. Kings birthday holiday.
The old Holden in the video is a HJ Statesman Deville, 308 V8, T400 Trans. A very smooth ride. The motorcycle is a 1981 Suzuki GSX 750. My first road bike.
I learnt how to develop black and white film in the school dark room at tech in the 1970s. It was an ordeal to load the film in the canister in the pitch black. Colour was new and costly. But I still love photography to this day. Although I've retired the 35mm cameras. Gone digital. Cheers.
I can still recall the smell of the developing chemicals haha.
@darwininsights442 oh God yes. It got on your hands. Despite tongs for developing fluid, stop, and fix. When using the precious paper for the actual photos. I think negatives still smell today. Like microfiche wè used in the bank in the day. Yucky.
An interesting insight into Darwin Insights. 👍
nice turn out , loved that Holden van there so cool 👍 never seen one in the flesh over here in the UK
Holden and Ford made some pretty cool Panelvans in the 70,s. My brother had a Sandman with 5 litre V8 , 4 speed manual. He taught me to drive in it.
Hope you enjoy this years Cruise for the Cause. You can check out previous years videos here : th-cam.com/video/hayYNJ-NFHs/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/e0jzkRHkijc/w-d-xo.html . 2022 th-cam.com/video/GwfA4-tXRJ4/w-d-xo.html
