    I worked in the paging industry back in the 80’-90’s and the BRAVO pager from the big M was the pager of choice. The biggest problem was with the display. We had purchased hundreds of expensive control boards to replace broken displays. We finally were able to obtain a heat bonding station from the big M parts depot as well as a case of displays, pad cleaning pens, flux, etc. during the quiet times we would clean off ten at a time the control boards and then proceed to lightly flux the pads on the boards. One then places the board in the alignment jig and adds the display. At this point the heater has been preheating for at least ten minutes. You could then lower the heater head onto the joint and time it for X number of seconds as prescribed by M. Bingo a new display and another control board saved. Basically the flex circuits have been designed to use a heat bonding machine with a specific temperature for the solder used on the pre tinned display. A silicone strip in front of the heating element protects the flex board while providing the proper amount of heat and pressure to complete the soldering process. Now if I only had that press, perhaps I could have designed or modified it for the longer heat strip needed for the 857 displays. There is an adhesive strip just above the strip contacts, any idea what might be used in place of the original? It’s double sided and is used as "insurance policy" against accidentally ripping off the display from the control board if some novice takes their unit apart as well as for holding the flex in place for soldering.

    I would think Yaesu should get on the ball and start making these displays or they should release technical specs to another manufacturer. All of us who have these radios with this problem swamp Yaesu with emails to get them off of their butts and get more displays made. This radio should not be obsoleted for this stupid issue.

  • @Subgunman
    @Subgunman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Replacing the whole board is quick and convenient but doesn’t anyone work on reseating the tiger stripe to the board and lcd screen? I have reworked some smaller screens on commercial radios, it’s a pain and takes patience to realign that silicone conductive strip with both the board and lcd.

    • @andyruggiero3445
      @andyruggiero3445 หลายเดือนก่อน

      reseating is impossible, there is nothin to reseat. heat guns and other attempts to FIX the LCD does not fix the problem. the LCD must be replaced. It is not about convenience it is about necessity.

  • @glenb1356
    @glenb1356 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have two of these radios on the shelf. Both had lcd problems, one will not work on 40M LSB. I paid Yaesu $250 to get one lcd repaired. This was many years ago. Seems like way too much money for a radio that is probably not even worth $400. I was so upset about it, that I really contemplated designing a replacement control head for the unit. I have designed many microprocessor based units in the past. Color lcd touch screen are so cheap, and ARM32 processors so fast and powerful, that it seems someone would have already done this. Anyway, why not a CAT module to control the radio in lieu of a radio with a bad screen? AND !!! You mean know one knows where Yaesu bought these displays from? Not even a ham who used to work for Yaesu?

  • @astrawally8448

    Why wouldn't you give it a quick dust off then disassemble the head and put all the inert/plastic bits into an ultrasonic cleaner, then used electronic safe aerosol solvent to clean the board/electronics?

    • @andyruggiero3445
      @andyruggiero3445 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      great care needs to be taken not to have a cleaning process for the plastic parts not to damage any of the silkscreen lettering. I use a special cleaner that does not harm the plastic and paint. I would fear an ultrasonic cleaner would attack this. The electronics are cleaned at the time of the rebuild, day to weeks ahead of the installation. I use cleaners designed to remove flux and acid deposit from handling. this prevents long term corrosion. I have performed the same cleaning process on almost 600 of these now over 8 years so this is now all standard work process.

    Andy, do you check the boards for full function? For some reason my external meter doesn't work properly. It acts like there is a constant voltage on it no matter the meter mode. I haven't bothered delving into the issue to even see if the meter is controlled from the panel or somewhere else.

    • @Subgunman
      @Subgunman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you have the head reworked for the missing stripes issue or did it never work? You can get schematics off of the internet to see where the control for the external meter comes from but I beleive it is controlled by board in the control head.

      Where did you buy the part from? Was it only the LCD or full board?

  • @Subgunman
    @Subgunman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Sounds like a flaw in manufacturing of the filters. They could have been contaminated before sealing or the seals failed in service. Might be a good idea to keep a few on hand in a vacuumed sealed container. A good question to ask the customer is if the radio is used or stored in a damp and or humid environment. After working for 30+ years as a comms tech I made sure I invested in some good desoldering systems from PACE. One need the right tool for the right job. I refused to work on hilljack hacks upon opening the radio to find the customer has already tried his own repairs. My rates were posted. Factory clean radios cost $75/hour but hacked radios went for $125/ hour. No if's, and's or but's. And that was if the radio was not seriously burned or missing traces, plus NO WARRANTY ON REPAIR WORK ON A HACKED RADIO.
