    He will only be the highest paid until McDavid signs his next contract. That's how this works...the cap goes up then there's a new highest paid player. NHL fans are stepping over dollars to argue about nickels. The real problem here is the patheticly low salary cap. Max Scherzer(MLB) makes $45M, Steph Curry(NBA) makes $50M and Joe Burrow(NFL) makes $55M. How can anyone argue NHL'ers make too much when you look at the other leagues. If you look at annual revenues the NHL brings in a lot more than 25% of the revenue of other leagues. So why are their top players making a quarter of the money?

  • @mortimerreed

    Been a leaf fan for 24 years and am a huge Matthews fan but I honestly cannot pinpoint one contract that a superstar player took in Toronto that was at a heavy discount like Crosby to win a cup, that's why 1967 lurks over us. He's top 5 in the league overall, top 3 overall defensive forward and #1 in scoring. I love everything about his contract except for his term. 4 years? He always leaves that seed of doubt that he wants to be a leaf lol. If he signed for 8 years, this wouldn't even be a topic of discussion. Also, if anybody wants to correct me on my first point please do, because i'm very interested to look into it. Great video man!

    • @aidanserra7021
      @aidanserra7021 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's hard to make any Toronto-specific comparisons to your first point. Only since 2020ish have Toronto been a team with legitimate Stanley Cup hopes (legitimate meaning they actually had a chance to win - not the fans overrating the team). From the beginning of the salary cap to 2020, the Leafs had either been a non-playoff team or a team destined for a first round exit. Conversely, look at players who at one point took discounted team-friendly contracts - Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and Brayden Point are three good examples. All three of those players played for teams who had legitimate chances to win the Stanley Cup, and did in fact win. The team sold the player on the "if you take a discount, we could win" and it worked. Auston Matthews is realistically the first Maple Leafs superstar to sign in Toronto since they were in that legit cup contender category, even Marner's 10.9 AAV was signed after a 2018-19 season in which Toronto finished third in the Atlantic and lost in the first round - they were hardly a legit contender. Matthews is the first Leaf star that you could make the argument could have taken that team-friendly deal. Toronto are legit contenders - will they be without William Nylander next year? Maybe, but it'll hurt their chances. Players don't take team friendly deals simply out of the goodness of their hearts. They do it because they believe doing so will help their team win a Stanley Cup. There's a reason, for instance, you're not going to see Elias Pettersson take a team-friendlyt deal in Vancouver this year. What have the Canucks done to possibly convince them that they're remotely close to contending? Nothing, they've been a dumpster fire since he got there, save for one year they made a playoff run with a team they promptly ruined over the next two offseasons. So I'm not saying you're wrong in saying no superstars have ever taken team-friendly contracts - I'm saying that before Matthews, no superstar has had a reason too. He did have a reason too, and he chose not to.

    While I do wish he signed a longer term. It's hard to blame the guy for chasing the buck. It is a business after all..... I truly believe Matthews will be leaf for life and he's on track to become the greatest leaf of all time. He will bring Toronto a cup. And that to me, makes it worth it. Do you think Mcdavid and Drai will resign in Edmonton? I know it's early still but things aren't looking very good there.That'd be a good take. Great vid Sunny!

    • @SunnyB02
      @SunnyB02 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would like to think so. To me, it's nice to see superstar players remain loyal to their teams when they treat them fairly. Also, in hockey culture there is more of an expectation for them to stay unlike other leagues (NBA) where players bounce around. Watching interviews of both them speak, they're very like-minded so I can see them having similar aspirations.
