Two Pints of Maggots & A Packet of Hooks
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 มิ.ย. 2012
My Name is Dave Eastwood and I've been an angler for over 30 years. I'm no expert videographer but I try and hope you enjoy the channel.
A little bit about me:
- Former Angling Reporter for the Lincolnshire World Website & Oldham Advertiser Newspaper
- Creator and Host of the Fishing Podcast "Two Pints of Maggots & A Packet of Hooks"
- Regular contributor to Improve Your Coarse Fishing Magazine
- An Angling Trust Qualified Coach. (www.eastmidlandsanglingacademy.com)
- Social Media Admin for Miracle Baits
I love fishing matches and would describe myself as a "club" angler who enters the occasional open competition. I'll never win anything big…but I can hold my own.
Whether a tiny river, sprawling lake, deep blue ocean or commercial snake lake... I have fished them all.
My passion is just going fishing in great surroundings and meeting new people along the way.

Barely a week goes by when another local fishing tackle shop seems to close. Re-inventing the "Tackle Shed" section of the podcast, I make an order from Temu to see if cheap Chinese imports are any use and potentially impacting uk fishing shops. I also visit my local tackle shop. I believe it to be a great example of a well ran independent store which gives reason to avoid quick online fixes an...

On first impressions, whip fishing can be seen as a bendy pole with some line tied from the end. This isn't far from the truth and its a super easy way for youngsters to begin coarse fishing. However, for those fishing matches and competitions it is often an overlooked tactic where tackle can start as little as £10 up to the £100s I walk through some ideas on whip fishing in horrific weather co...

I think also some of the rates and rent the tackle shops are charged especially in the city centre areas make it difficult to survive there is only so much you can pass on to the customer,
+@charliered374 100% location is key.
Is that the new Acolyte one? I’ll see if it’s in my shop 👍
Top easy to follow overview, one line worth a look is the latest offering from Drennan, a new flouro carbon.
Great winter weight, top result 👍
I no longer buy anything from abroad on line any more because every thing i have got from abroad on line has been crap.
Very interesting video and no scorpions in your packages ;-) I find the main problem when trying to support your local tackle shop is having a good stock at consumables and I think that’s the same with many small tackle shops when it comes to feeders and hook lengths etc
+@richardgreen8867 yep keeping the shelves stocked is a biggy.
Coming from same area as you Gilders was my go to tackle shop - Pam and Gerry ever present. However places like your local are good for browsing and we all enjoy a mooch. Could the demise of some of the shops be due to the advent of pellets? Not many people use live baits these days along with “fishery pellet” only venues. Everyone wants a bargain and to see some of the prices of feeders and EVA you can’t blame people looking around. Tight lines
+@leefairbrother6527 good point. I think you’re right, Gilders, tight lines, Middleton Angling centre… you always had to know what you wanted because they would be busy and there was no room. My shop is now more typical of a store that has to be big to accommodate carp fishing which is the biggest part of the sport now. You have to evolve or fall by the wayside I guess.
Bro you need to find the top sellers they all sell feeder rods float rods lure rods etc etc braid mono fluorocarbon top quality fluorocarbon 100 metres £7pure latex bands 500 for 2.20 they expand from 4mm to 12mm whats not to like,YOUR REEL ISN'T BROKEN IT'S MANUALLY OPERATED MOST PROS USE Manually operated bail arm bro THAT'S FACT
+@delwigzieful thanks for the heads up. As for the reel, not for me, I’ll stick to genuine Daiwa or Shimano where the bail arm engages when I crank the handle. I did get a refund though so job done.
I think the fact most stuff is stupid prices 6 bead connectors £4...temu 30 bead connectors £1
Image Pole floats, Pro-Micron .06 and 0.055 line and Gamakatsu ultra fine wire bloodworm hooks , ah memories, one of the happier times in my past 😎
+@LostinDigitalShow Image “Ghost Hooks” ! I can’t remember the Japanese hooks, they were in a silver packet with a red logo in the middle. They were quality.
Ashima! They were the hooks.
Unfortunately some tackle shops are not run as businesses, folk get made redundant and “set up” as a tackle shop which is never going to work long term, then you’ve got the coffee shop factor where certain elements hang around the tackle shop for hours drinking tea & coffee and expect stuff for nothing! Good anglers don’t always make good business owners, that’s why some independent shops are thriving and others are falling by the wayside. Only my option but sadly very true. Tight Lines 👍🦆🎣
+@foxley66 some great points raised. I think the coffee shop factor is a real interesting point… especially in a small store they take up all the room!
And can be “intimidating” to inexperienced anglers as these folk generally “know it alls”🤫🤫🤫
Alibaba and Ali express branded stuff is counterfeit they are famous for it as someone coming from the world of guitar Alibaba and AliExpress became famous for fake Les Paul guitars
+@stevep119 ahhh that’s interesting. I guess some of these basic designs of simple items like rests and trays are difficult to patent.
Maybe if anglers weren’t being ripped off they wouldn’t be buying from China. When we are paying £5 for 10 hook beads or kickers that we know cost pennies, it’s not surprising some people look elsewhere.
+@Stribbo55 I think there’s a lot to be said for some of the mark ups on terminal tackle for sure.
The reel not broken manual bail arm's stay open so it doesn't accidentally close on hard cast and makes you crack off....
+@Fishshooting all bail arms stay open, but they also should engage and snap close when the handle is turned.
Afraid not. Some high end reels are manual close only.
@@awilderireland absolutely spot on mate i have 2 Daiwa TDR and they are manual if you watch all the top anglers manually close the bail arms that's a fact.
@@delwigzieful Yes I have Daiwa Castizm's. Very similar reel to yours. The same. No auto bail. I also have a Shimano Twin Power. Again manual closure.
Let’s have it right, this is an £8 reel and certainly not in the same league as a castizm etc. It was broke!
Conclusion. Independents are in some trouble for many reasons. Some you mentioned such as Unstructured, off the beaten track, also not able to compete with the bigger chains (Buying power, out town Large retail area etc). I would add the costs of business rates, property rents, ( High street always more expensive, Parking). Internet is also a main cause of down fall of the independents. No Web site, No Mail order facility. I suppose we could go on and on. Well presented David and well done for actual Temu comparison regarding quality, usefulness and practicality. Cheers
+@peterthornton8520 good point about online retailers. Some of them are selling at what appears to be close to cost price. It’s them that seem to go to the wall eventually. My local shop doesn’t do mail order but maybe one day they will have to.
We anglers should be doing our upmost to support our "LOCAL" tackle shops. Unfortunately the meaning of the word "LOCAL" is no longer LOCAL as most of us have to travel up to 30 plus miles to the Tackle Shop. Also a number of older tackle shops sem to be stocking less of our kit (Match Tackle etc) and more of the Specialist kit (Carp etc). Finally a lot of the LOCAL shops seem to be struggling with the lack of supply of even the most simple and needed gear especially from Preston, Matrix and Middy to name but a few. When you look into this in a bit more depth it all end up in the Far East. I will now watch the rest of the VLOG. 2:28 onwards.
It's the most crap tackle u can buy ,,,absolute rubbish 😮
+@shauncorless8965 99% certainly is!
My local tackle shop is great owners and great staff. Couldn’t be without it shout out to Rochdale tackle shop
+@jamesstridgen6320 I know it well. Is it still Stuart that runs it?
Dave If you mix the paste too wet put it in a cotton cloth ( tea towel ) it will draw the water out.
Nice one Mick, I’ll remember that it was ok, only slightly soggy 😂
Why don't you let us see the float, very poor camera work.
😂 because I haven’t got £££ of top camera gear. As I say in my intro, I’m no expert videographer.
that was me on the other peg i had five carp and a roach i was only there a few hours
I would have gone up that end if if was free. Peg 15
@@TPOMAAPOH i was on the the method feeder using small grub wafters had a nice chilled few hours after being ill for a month.
Good man. Just the place to relax.
Miss the podcasts.
Me too pal. Saturated now though.
Nice video m8 looks a good lake and club m8
Thank you 👍
Looks like a nice venue. Thanks for confirming how your run a roving peg selection event. Close finish! "No way!" says Gail! 😂
Only a little match so why not let everyone pick where they like. Gail is always there or thereabouts. What’s coarse fishing like in Melbourne? I’ve family in mooroolbark
Dave I will have to come down to show you how we use to fish at Middlleton.
Looks like hard work to me that Dave
Easier to swing in than carp mate 😂
I’m nearly seventy now but we used to come down from Sheffield as kids -5 and have big nets of roach on tares big shoals never touched until we turned up . And at other end at chaple hill massive shoals of bream in early summer
There’s still bites to be had but certainly winter time is best 👍
Daft question please. What is the difference between a pole and an elasticated whip please? Tight lines.
No that isn’t a daft question at all. Most poles nowadays are made up of sections that are put together (put over joints) to increase the length. Poles typically are sold from 6 upto 16 metres in length. By putting the different joints together extends the length of the pole and makes it versatile allowing to fish different distances. A whip tends to be of the telescopic variety (although in the video I do use a system which is like a little pole with separate sections). Being telescopic they tend to have to be fished at that length. Elastic will be in the end section and there won’t be what we call a puller kit which are used in poles. So an elasticated whip would be very limited in its use and nowhere near as versatile as a pole. But for fishing to hand could be a good option depending on the situation.
Great intro mate. Hopefully it will get you those extra subscribers to your channel.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for all you do ,I hadn't fished for about 15 years after loosing my wife to cancer ,your vids ,tips ,knowledge, has given me to the courage to get back into fishing thank you 😊
Well there is no higher praise than that. Thanks for the kind words which makes all the filming/editing worthwhile. As I’ve always said if a video helps one person (In any way) then it’s a job well done. Good luck with your fishing 🎣
Enjoyed that little intro Dave, Must get you down on the Soar again this year and I really most get up to your neck of the woods. Keep up the good work 🙂
Absolutely mate 👏
another very informative video, well done again, great viewing.

Lovely fishing champ. Haven’t fished this method for 20 + years
A man of your means? Never! Get an acolyte mate, lovely bit of kit.
Good vid, just subbed. Hope you have more like this planned ?😊
Glad you liked it 💪
Excellent video, with some really useful info on the weather link. Cheers for that. And well done on second place.
Glad you found it useful.
Do you think a bit of corn might of sorted them better Roach out quicker ?
That’ll teach me to comment before watching the whole session 😂
Yep! 😂😂
Very informative and sure to help new and old alike. There more anglers caught on floats than fish. Imho.
Hard to better a good day out with the old sigma wand💪
Now you’re talking! Proper rod when Shakespeare was a proper brand and not American owned.
@@TPOMAAPOH it’s a great tool, that I’ve used in hundreds of old winter leagues, for that extra point even saving a blank. Three glass tips still stores away in the blank. 👍
How about fishing with a “My first fishing rod and reel combo set” the £20 sort. Love the channel keep it up.
Oooof, if only I still had them. A 10ft Shakespeare rod and no idea what the reel was! It was a crap set up I know that 😂
Wonder how many on a banded bait🙈👍
@@TPOMAAPOH That is the common thread that ties us all together. Dad wasn't going to spend hundreds. Try to prove to kids you CAN catch and inspire the next generation plus take the rest of us down memory lane. mine was green fibreglass with wood handle and blue tin reel.
some good advice and a great match, keep up the good work.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it.

Hey Ste, the link is in the description of the vid 👍
Sorry i still cant find it 🥴 Found links for other things but not the fishing weather app 🙁
www.netweather.tv/weather-forecasts/sports-and-events/fishing
Thx Dave 👍 Spot on 😃
Good match in the usual swimming pool conditions. Very close. Amazing how many anglers generally get the inflate your fish urge when catching. I loved the the chat about the weather and its influence on fishing. Very true what you said. I have always looked at the weather prior to going fishing because it can have a marked impression on your chances. As I run a Club with 17 anglers I normally 3 days before the Match email them all the weather forecast for the day we go fishing but will not give details on possible ways and where to fish. Ha Ha. Well fished. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it! And that’s very good of you sending out the forecast etc can’t argue with that!
Dave the pink brolly looks like a real fishing brolly.
😂😂 I’ll use it next time!
Great day out. I enjoyed it but did myself no favours as I fished it as I have in the summer. I’ve learned a lot from the video.
Did well on a difficult day.
Just found your channel and watched a couple of your videos. Got to say really enjoyed what I saw. Well done mate.
Nice one 👍 Its wot u know not wot u got 😉
Great vid mate cheers 👍
are you right handed you look it.... if so may I highlight that usually right handed people have their bait trays on the left, just makes for more room and less likelihood of breaking the pole. If left handed pole and top kits would be on the left, bait on the right. Obviously its upto your own preference but just thought id mention it as its interesting, maybe you are correct and everyone else is wrong. wd mate whatever your doing is working for you.
Yes I fish cack handed I’m afraid. It’s just the way I’ve always set up, tried it the normal way and it doesn’t work for me.
First time I have watched your video ,and enjoyed the watch, certainly will watch again... 👍🎣
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi, I was the guy at 31.52 😂😂. I did indeed win with 47lb. I lost close to 10 big carp. As to how you fished it You did a great job and fished a good solid match with it being your first attempt. it was always going to be hard with the guy in peg 12 fishing into the corner. It can be a lethal peg. I had 3 lines shallow, short and 11.5m under the tree. Shallow and short lines didn't even buy me a fish. It was all 6mm hard pellets under the tree. Cad potting micros mixed with groundbait. As the match progressed I had to make abit of noise with catty to keep the bites coming. In the warmer months make no mistake 2s 3s and 400lbs come out of this lake regular.. Great video I've dropped you a sub. Tight lines
Excellent! What’s your club called? I should have either switched to those hard pellets a little earlier or committed to the waggler until the last hour, but shudda wudda cudda. Well done on the win, I can imagine some monster weights in summer for sure.
@@TPOMAAPOH the club itself isn’t going anymore but all the folk still gather on Sundays, Im only really there winter and close season. We rotate between 2 venues.. as for the shudda cudda it is what it is, castor would have picked you some big ide and f1s I did see you fishing the jigger at 1 point it works well in there, there’s also a lot of water in there at the moment the side you was on has deeper margins than my side. Once the water drops back to normal levels you will be seeing averages of 5ft and the margins will be tasty. I think next time you will better yourself as you have already seen what you could have done differently. Best of luck mate it’s a good mixed fishery. Plenty to go at 👍
