We have them where I work. They're wired up so that the moment you open it, it notifies our public safety officers, and they show up to assist.

Had to get a blood patch-twice-first one didn’t hold. After the spinal tap and when I was leaving I got a weird headache that went away when I would lay down but come back when I sat up. That’s when I had to get my 2nd blood patch. Then had to lay still for an eternity so it would hold. They said what was happening was the spinal fluid was leaking from the tap site, so my freaking brain was sorta sinking and sitting on the bottom of my skull 🧠 💀

Fentanyl made my pain much worse but made me very alert so I could use all my pain management techniques from my chronic migraines and they kept giving it to me to the point they worried I was going to OD. It is on all my do not give lists with the Drs and local hospital because ovarian torsion pain being worse isn’t something I would wish on anyone. I think it would have broken me if I didn’t already have pretty catastrophic migraines.

Had a guy just straight up warn me without me even having to ask that he did meth about 30mins before he walked in just as a heads up; I can't tell you how much I appreciated that. We got along just fine and I had time to chat with him about what's been going on with his life from all the time I saved.

I've been prescribed Oxy once and NEVER again for me. 😅 Honestly I still felt the pain AND I was so high all I could do was grip the bed as the room spun trying not to throw up. I'll just take Tylenol thanks 👍 Even if some of the pain still cuts through at least I don't feel like puking at the same time. 😂 (This is just me and my super low tolerance ass, if it helps you great I support you. If you struggle with it, I'm sorry you don't deserve to be dependent on something and encourage you to do the best you can with the available resources, I also support you!)

I’ve been extremely unlucky with my health and I’ve had to go to A&E maybe once every 3-4 months last several years - and I thought this was frequent. People turning up on a weekly basis is just nuts, at least all my health concerns were genuinely serious

My department issues us narcan and AEDs. Haven't used either yet, surprisingly. Did chest compressions once before I got my narcan. We are usually able to rouse them enough to be semi conscious by the time Fire gets on scene. Chest compressions are my jam, though.

I had to have two blood patches for CFS leaking out of a hole in my back after having a temporary implant in my spine (she wasn't supposed to nick the dura and insert the wire inside. Go figure). Tops the list of least favorite experience in my sixty years on the planet. The black hole headache from low cfs in my skull was terrifying, too, all nine days of it.

As a cop I don't understand the one with the knife. It is not illegal to hold the knife. There is so much context and nuance needed to make this anything. Are you holding a knife in the kitchen? How was this unusual? Did they make threats of hurting others or self-harm? Are they amped up? Are they pointing it at you? Aggressively or casually? Or are they cutting a sandwich?

Honestly, please just tell us that you want some food and a place to rest for a bit. Please just tell us that it's too cold outside and you just want a blanket from our blanket warmer. I'll get you bus passes, new pants, or even a dose of your (non-narcotic) meds if you ran out and feel like taking them today. But don't waste all of our time and resources for the thousandth time, saying that you're coming into the ER because you're, "gonna run into traffic." Not only are you making us REALLY not wanna help you, it leaves a whole bunch of jaded ER staff that don't trust when someone is seriously in a mental health crisis.

I was in a horrific accident when I was a 21 year old world class athlete. The muscles held when the bones shattered. A drunk drivers knocked my car off a 150 ft cliff. Made all the local news. Shattering my spine, 7 inch diagonal separation of the vertebra my thoracic spine was shattered. Most of the bones in torso were broken or crushed, bilateral lungs collapsed, head trauma and intermittent blindness. A team of bone trauma surgeons worked 7.5 hours reconstructing my spine. I was given experimental drugs only approved for the dying. I’m glad I was. They likely reduced the swelling that was about to paralyze me before the surgery could be done, but they nearly killed my kidneys which took 20 years to recover. But since my spinal cord stretched (I think I was the second know case) and wasn’t paralyzed they proceeded. I learned to walk again and the brain trauma eventually subsided, had surgery and I’m not blind. 29 surgeries later I’ll never be healthy but I can walk most days and appear normal most of the time when I’m out and about. I was on opioids 3.5 years and fairly substantial doses. When the reconstruction surgery sequence last was done my head orthopedist apologized that I was almost certainly addicted but not to worry they would help me get off after I was past the recovery of this final surgery. I told him I was not addicted. I thought him a fool. He didn’t believe I was correct. When the pain level dropped I stopped taking the meds to control the pain. No fuss. No difficulty. It’s a tool. I stopped using the tool I no longer needed. He was shocked. I’m in chronic pain but I prefer life without meds. I honestly respect the choice of others who would choose differently. I’ve since had additional surges and re-injuries, complications that caused additional broken bones and resumed pain medication for the duration, then stopped. Others have said no one could take years of constant pain meds and not be addicted, but clearly they are wrong, since I did. It never made me fuzzy headed, just less pain distracted and damaged. You can desire something that you choose to not pursue. I love chocolate but I’m perfectly capable of saying no. I truly do not understand why people feel the desire or need or choice to be away from themselves, but they do. They should be provided safe options for their bad choices. People are free to choose the life they will lead, many choose poorly. They have the freedom to choose poorly so long as they only hurt themselves and stay out of the way of decently behaved functioning society. Anyway clearly some people become addicted. Some of those people stop, some don’t. Personal choice. I live near Portland Oregon in one part of downtown the fire chief said they administered narcan to the same individuals over and over and over. In the past month they had had 16 people that they administered narcan to 4+ times in one day. Thats a choice. Not a good one but still a choice.

I became a "frequent flyer" in the psych ward because I lost my job and couldn't afford to see a psychiatrist outpatient, or my meds. Thankfully after getting on disability I got Medicare and now I'm on meds that let me live a semi-normal life 😅

I live in other countries. No places better than the US, despite its flaws. One of my criticisms of people who want socialized medicine is that they don’t bear any of the tax burden. There’s a point of taxation where it makes more sense for higher earners to work less. Sadly, we’ll never fix illegal immigration to the point where it would be financially feasible to have universal healthcare.

To be clear: opioid is opium derivatives such as heroin, morphine, oxy, fentanyl, etc. “Downers”. NOT meth, coke, speed, crack, etc. For all the cops out there who use the term “narcotics” inappropriately. Narcotic, from the Greek word that means “make numb”. Its effects are similar to narcolepsy in that it makes one sleepy.

As a janitor I always felt so sorry for 5150s they were usually for patients that were waiting for a room to go somewhere better but instead they were stuck in a small room with a stranger watching them without anything in their room at the er. We had to take out cords, hand sanitizers, and even the sheets.
