Episode 304 - Surviving Pancreatic Cancer with Tina Lucci
Meet Tina Lucci from Allentown, Pennsylvania. She is a special education teacher and a mother of two boys. Tina is a survivor of pancreatic cancer, having been diagnosed during the holiday season of 2019.
She first felt unwell at work and went to the emergency room. Her diagnosis was a shock, as she had no family history of pancreatic cancer and was a mother of two young boys. Tina chose not to share her diagnosis with her loved ones initially, preferring only her immediate family to know, especially since it was the holiday season. She felt ashamed and like she had somehow brought the cancer upon herself.
Tina started chemotherapy treatment but had allergic reactions, such as swelling of her tongue, and had to switch to a different regimen. She traveled from Allentown to Philadelphia to Fox Chase Cancer Center for her treatments. However, her local hospital's oncology department also provided treatment closer to her home. To date, she has undergone over 70 chemotherapy treatments and counting and has also had radiation therapy. Chemo has been effective for her during her nearly 5-year journey.
She was scheduled to undergo an Appleby procedure, but the cancer had spread to her liver, leading to the cancellation of the surgery. After spending four days in the hospital, she continued chemotherapy to keep her tumor stable. Tina has become an advocate for herself and feels that chemotherapy is the best way to extend her time with her family rather than putting herself through a risky surgery.
Tina describes how cancer has made her softer and more gentle. She finds herself letting minor annoyances go and living life more fully. She takes every opportunity to spend quality time with her sisters and friends. Overall, Tina is making the most of her experience with cancer, referring to it as her "prison time." She feels that she is serving time with this disease but is making the best of it.

WOW!! Just want to say first that I'm Italian too, lol. I was diagnosed May 2023. I did 6 months of chemo and 5 weeks of radiation. I was in "remission" for three months but sick from upper GI bleeds from radiation. And needed blood transfusions. now back to chemo, which is making me have fevers and body aches and 5 to 6 days at the time. Then I feel better and then right back to chemo. My question is, how do you stay in faith, I'm having a real hard time with that, and I feel so guilty. God bless you and keep going strong.

Jodie's story is exactly what happened to a close friend of mine. Everything went fast once diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that spread to her liver. Her gallbladder was removed via an emergency procedure. She thought she had food poison. However, the reality hit once she awoke from her procedure. She was in ICU for 4 days. The doctor dropped a bomb on her. She now prefers quality of life versus quantity. She'll be stopping the chemotherapy treatments.

Here’s my story. I’m 82 now and was 78 when I had my Whipple surgery. We retired to Florida at 60 and several years later I had appendicitis, which required its removal. In the process the scan showed a lump in my pancreas. I then underwent a biopsy, nothing, benign. I did this for 10 years, getting it checked each year. At that time my surgeon said nothings happened so you no longer have to check it. In the 14 th year, I was having my sugar go up some. I went back to him and he did another biopsy. This time it grabbed several cancer cells. Stage 1 At this point I moved my care to Mayo. I felt too old to do this horrendous surgery, but they convinced me I was a young 78, and would do well. I really did very well, not one bit of pain, I was glued, not stitched. After 5-6 days I came home and continued to do well. The cancer tumor was encased in a benign tumor and he was able to do a slightly easier version of Whipple. The tumor was in the head right next to the opening and he took 40% of the pancreas plus other parts. I did get CDefficile and have that to today, and have been on Vancomycin since. That’s another story. All tests to this date have shown no problem with the Pancreas, and although I’ve gotten breast cancer, it appears to be non related. At this moment I’m going through Keytruda treatments, #4 is tomorrow. I would say that in my case that it would have been hidden and really difficult to find. Sincerely, Elaine Russell

NET needs to be treated differently from other cancers. It sounds like it was treated with chemo and radiation first. Depending on where in the pancreas it is, surgery probably should have thought of, too. I had my PNET diagnosis 2020 in the middle of one of the lockdowns. And the prognosis was at least to 2030, if not beyond. Only surgery, and scar tissue herniations as complication. Screenings show No Evidence of Disease. October is the next scan and Gastroscopy. I hope to get 25 years NED like one of the guys I met at NET onco rehab. Living the best way possible is all we can aspire to.

Dear Charlie - thank you for sharing your story. It was very moving and impactful for me. A lot has happened over the last 2 months for my husband and I. We’re 43 years old, about to celebrate our 14 yr wedding anniversary and simply feel like we’re thriving. However, we were handed the news that’s forever changed our lives. Through various tests, scans, and biopsies, we’ve discovered that Jon, the love of my life has pancreatic cancer, which has potentially metastasized to his lungs. We are 3 chemo sessions in as of today and hope to move towards surgery in a few months. These past weeks have been among the most devastating and frightening of my life as we come to terms with this reality. While we are trying to remain hopeful, we are also acutely aware of the seriousness of the situation. The positivity you portrayed resonated with me - In light of everything that’s been happening , I decided to surprise Jon this past weekend by flying in his siblings and the wedding party to a beautiful resort in Palm Springs. We renewed our vows in an amazing and heartfelt ceremony, marking nearly 14 years of marriage. I strongly believe in the power of positivity and your story is epic tale of love, strength and hope.

This is a good news story if I ever heard one. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm thinking that the protocol for Folfirinox has changed however or drug concentration is different than in 2012 as the standard I've been told is 12 sessions over 6 months. My radiation oncologist said they are happy if someone gets through 4 sessions and 6 is even better. Very few complete 12. It becomes too toxic for the liver and you can lose your mobility from the neuropathy.
