Hi everyone! My name is Aunt Susan and I love my gardens (think landscaping and flowers, with a side of veggies)! With every home I've built, my flower beds have grown and become more extensive. My current home is now the third one where I've added landscaping around the entire house. I truly am captivated by designing the beds, adding the plants/shrubs/trees, and then watching how it grows and develops over time. This channel has been created so I can chronicle the journey of my current (and hopefully forever!) home. I'll try to share tips, strategies, tools, and resources as I learn or find them. Thanks for tagging along and joining me in my garden!

I was interested in the seeds you are showing as I’ve never heard of them. I did checkout their website and like always checked for reviews of this company. Wow! BBB had some doozy complaints with responses Very Unprofessional from the company. Actually I’m surprised as I’ve never seen a company respond in such a manner. It’s too bad as I thought they had a decent selection of seeds, but after reading the poor responses I think best to not get involved. Maybe you purchase in person because I believe it’s a company in your state? Hopefully you won’t need to converse with such nasty customer service as I’ve just read. About vermiculite preventing algae, 😂 I never used it to top seedlings before until just recently and it turned green😂. I’ve never had algae on seedlings before.
This is the first year I'm trying this company, so hopefully I'll have good results. If not, I just won't buy from them next year. :)
I set the seed packs in fridge inside zip bag and then I read things like poppies need to be in moist soil to stratify. Oh well, we will see. If they don’t pop up in a reasonable amount of time I will bag and throw back in fridge for a bit. Lauren’s grape was one that didn’t WS last year so trying inside. I know they like it cool as the red ones seem to grow all winter. Just sowed Grama Grass and it was up in 2 days. Sowing many more inside soon and maybe a few in WS. I mentioned the difficulties here with WS in your other vid. I hope the coral geranium is actually coral this time as last year they were red and they resent hopefully coral, the double petunias the blue is much slower than the valentine, but the doubles are really nice. Love the Zebrune shallots. And happy dance the Foxglove are looking Great all the way through winter! It is my first time succeeding and can’t wait to see them bloom this year as they are biannual. I’m trying a new way to start seeds in 5” trays and pot up what germinates and see if that is better. Can’t wait to get planting. I have no restraint on how many to plant😂. Just hope I can find room. I am pulling out geraniums that I overwintered tomorrow and hope they still look good. So a lot of potting up tomorrow.
That sounds like a lot of things going on with your planting this winter. I really expanded mine set up in hopes I can not have to buy anything I can't carry in one arm from the garden center this year. LOL
I’ve been reluctant to do very many this year. This winter has been the warmest I’ve ever known. To have 70s in February and March in WI is unheard of. At times I record weather and pinpointed I think what happened last year and it was warm and it snowed. We had rain in January which was crazy also. I think because the seeds are in an artificial environment they germinated way too soon and froze. Some may have rotted. I put a few on the east side of house this year and will see how that goes. We had 70s and this weekend 30-40 and back to upper 60s for several days and by the weekend cold. The nights can get in 20s and some nights the last couple months never reached freezing. Normally we get a brief Jan thaw, but this year it’s continuous. Worried about fruit plants budding too soon, orchards and wineries are also and the maple syrup had to be done a month in advance. I’m not sure WS can be very successful here unless the east side of building does the trick. It’s all out of whack.
The weather has definitely been kind of crazy the past couple of winters! Good luck with the ones on your east side!
If you decide to build another garden bed & cage, see ‘Hydrangea Teahouse’. I just brought her plans for 4.99. Looks like a nice fairly logical & good plan. Good Luck. I’m a Single, Aunt Dawn who does it all too !!.
I will check that out, although I've already started a new (and larger) garden :).

Thank you for sharing! I am in zone 9B and I now have 65 jugs between flowers and veggies. It’s just so exciting every day I look inside and see the changes , germinate, sprouting! New subscriber popping in to say hello! ❤
Hello!!
Dose cold stratification not happen when you winter sowing?
Cold stratification should occur if winter sowing (depending on your climate). The seeds I am starting in this video were all for inside starting so I had to do some cold stratification in the fridge.
So excited to watch your video. So, this will be my first time winter sowing. I’m in zone 7. Can I winter sow any vegetables and flowers? Just need a head start on this? Thanks! I do have everything I need and needed some help! Thanks!
The only things you probably shouldn't try winter sowing are tropical kinds of plants - things that only grow where it is warm all the time. Last year I did flowers (both annual and perennial) and some vegetables in my winter sowing. Most did just fine. Good luck on your efforts! I'd love to hear how it goes for you :).
I started mine. When something dont germinate in 45 days I repot new seeds and new soil. I dont have many jugs so dont want to waste even 1 lol.
I can understand that! Some things take some more time though - you might be able to get jugs from a local coffee shop. That's where I got a bunch last year for free.
@@auntsusansgarden Oh I wish we had a coffee shop here. That would be neat. I live alone and don't drink milk so I seldom buy it unless it's going in any recipes.
Omg I done like 65 last week and finish more 6 most flowers this afternoon. Need more jars to finish more flowers. I’m doing this for 4 yr now , last yr not very happy but this yr I’m hopping be better. But all my tomatoes and peppers do fantastic. And I use same mix and add to it peralite. I also do 3 holes on top ,no lids, and on side 4-5 because sometimes is better for draining on side too. This yr I use new jags ,old is got soo bad .
Sounds great!
I know how it could be working alone but would it had been simpler to dig out the soil on the higher end to sort of even out without having to leave the opening at the bottom.
I thought about that and decided building the one end up was easier than digging in the hard dirt.
I would love to have hosta in my yard but the deers eat them. I think that I will plant a lot of them along with some ferns to throw them off.
So far the deer have left mine mostly alone. Fingers crossed it stays that way! I think the 10 acre field that is farmed behind me might be helping me out.
Garden bed is looking good.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your process for winter sowing. Have a wonderful day
Thank you! You too!
Great video! Happy gardening 🌱👍🏼

No heat mat? Thank you!
I didn't have a heat mat for the first week or so. I thought maybe it needed one (I had never used one before), so I added one and the temp probe showed that they were staying at an appropriate temp without the mat.
Thank you for sharing, I would like to know what zone you are located?
You are welcome! I'm in zone 6 - although the recent USDA update says 7 but I'm hesitant and will probably stick with plants that do well in 6.
I found indoor potting mix and outdoor potting mixes both for containers. Which one do you recommend?
I would recommend outdoor since you will be placing the containers outside.
I plan on starting my winter sowing this week, can't wait!
It's such an easy and rewarding way to get things started - enjoy!
Yes i am getting ready to winter sow too. New friend here showing you support. Happy New year

Thanks Crystal!
Great video today ✌️
Wow love the video! Can't wait to see the outcome of all 217. I noticed that you said that you were having trouble with the rubber bands breaking some of the plastic bags and stuff as well as I see that it took a lot tape to do all of those milk jugs. I myself am an avid winter sower, but I made a video showing a way to make all your WS jugs without any of the duck tape. Saving a lot of time, money and eliminating messes as well if you'd like to check it out. I really think you'll find massive value and appreciation for it especially since you did over 200 WS jugs this way. But what you did was absolutely amazing and I know it will turn out great! -N
Thank you!
Love those containers...gotta go find me some...
This is my first year winter sowing and mine are sitting on pack porch so I keep eye on them for water but they been there since Feb 5th and mine have grown so much...I'm worried too I might loose mine cause so big already..praying yours survive.
