I bought a older ATK 300 15 years ago. I bought it because I had the cash and the Bass Player guy on You Tube Pudsy440 rocked this Bass and I thought I would want it. I never took to it nor really like the tones I get out of it so I just sold it to a Metal Head about two months ago. He loves this Bass so it will be played and that is what matters. Im a Groove player mostly. I Kinda miss the ESP Bass I had but Im thinking of trying out a Ibanez Sr model Bass. In fact I will buy one this year.
Make it so you can slide the pickup back and forth like on a gibson grabber!
I've had this bass for 20 years and I love it. I will say it does take some tinkering on the amp to get the tone right, but once you do it hits great. Hilariously the thing that helped the most was the LMB-3. I run that and a CEB-3 to to thicken up the low end and I set the limiter to take out the high portion of the chorus and chefs kiss.
How is the tension. Very low?
low to medium, more tension than guts, less than spiro weich, little bit less than obligatos
Is it routed to fit a 5 string p bass pickup on the neck ?
I haven't looked under the pickguard so don't know. It came stock with two jazz pickups
Every EMG pickup I've seen had the EMG brand etched into the cover. The covers on those are not removable either. So what pickup is this actually?
I just bought a bass like this two month ago, modded with a pair of EMG MMCS and P5. Vol blend bass treble 18V. The pair of 9V batteries are under the pickguard and got a "window" from the front, made of the pickguard, bolted with two screws. Elegant and clever mod. The sound is amazing.
Those basses look awesome. Too bad it stops there.
That didn't sound as bad as I might have thought
I need to know why this has J pickup configuration
Fender chose it to be so.
Nice looking/ sounding bass! Great demo!! Can you tell the weight and string spacing please? I found one of these tonight - quite cheap and I’m thinking about getting it now. Yea - your demo sold :) Thank you 🙏 🙏🙏
9.3lbs and about 15 mm string spacing
Thx for posting, nice walk. Thinking about trying these if you have any other feedback/observations!
Can't bow them, the tension is medium. Evah Slaps have less tension and feel more supple.
Is the G string durable or does it break?
I've never broken any string of this set, I've broken Guts and Obligatos
Hey! That is such a lovely bass, what is it? Cheers :)
S9 (79-82) USA Precision, a few mods, vintage Dimarzio, and Spitfire pickguard. Its 10.5 lbs so a nice solid weight.
@@petem8630 Thank you!!
It looks exactly how it sounds, not sure that’s a good or bad thing.
Oh I always wondered how they do that stuff, so the key is the really low bass position? I'll give it a try, thank you, great video!
low bass and straight arm
Yeah I've tried this and it works.
Hey Pete. Just saw this. Congratulations! I’ve had a ‘15 since they came out. I have 13 other Thunderbirds. But my ‘15 is the best of the lot. My No. 1. Best bass I’ve ever owned. Incredibly versatile tones. Mine is under eight pounds. No neck dive. Best neck I’ve ever played.
Song name? or is this just freestyle and if so... tabs?
Just improvising over a minor pentatonic
Very nice demo. I'm about to buy one tomorrow and this video has just confirmed my intentions!👍
Been looking for good sound demos of specifically the "neck" position of this bass, and this sounds great! It's rather reminiscent of a Rickenbacker bridge pickup!
Hey mate thanks for making this video! What a nice tone, sounds like a machine. I’ve been looking into getting one of these myself. How does it compare to your Japanese basses? Ive got a fender pb-62 and a pb-70 and find the 62 has a neck a bit too wide and the pb70 is a bit too heavy. Would you say this is a lightweight bass?
Thanks for the message, I sold the MF a few months ago. For me, it's all about woods, so any newish Squier i play feels light and airy (too me) the older Japanese basses feel heavier almost moist feeling as opposed to dry feeling of newer basses. When I'm talk about woods I'm talking about neck wood. Something about cured maple and old rosewood. I have 5 Precisions they all have strengths in different areas. I would happily gig with a MF.
@@petem8630 thanks for the reply man, I totally get what you’re talking about when you say almost moist feeling on the neck, I can feel that difference when comparing my 1989 pb62 to my 2002 pb70! Older basses seem to break in like a worn shoe and respond better to a stroke on a string.
@@petem8630 I’d say newer basses feel almost like plastic toys as opposed to that feeling of real wood older basses have. Does the MF have that toy feel?
@@brunopaparelli8143 I'm gonna said yes compared to older basses.
I bought a new one of these a number of yeas back and sold it within 3 months for three TIMES what I had paid for it. Regretted it ever since. Now looking again but seems everyone wants $700 so I now realize I messed up. LOL-ish
I sold this one too and wish i'd kept it
Tenés la perilla del tono pegada .......?

What knobs did you use?
Peeete you're so cool Pete I don't even play bass just guitar but your Aura is so amazing I couldn't look away. Thank you for this video. and also you have great taste in instruments, last few were beautiful
You’ve got a beautiful collection of Precision basses! I especially like the black MIM classic series bass.
Lovely,,Pete soon as you rolled off the top end,,,you can hear it sitting lovely in a mix!
Nice basses bruv. What do u think a jv squire is worth these days?
Hey Zachary, as you would know a lot depends on condition and what someone is willing to pay. So rough estimation would be $1K-$2k
@@petem8630 yeah thought so. Been shopping round for a backup p and have heard great things about the jv’s and s series squires. Will have to keep my eye’s out for one half decent
@@zacharymiller7763 They don't come up too often but be patient. The SQ series usually go for around $1k. JVs are totally different to SQs, more of a true recreation of an L series Fender P.
Hey pete nice basses, what strap is on that 75 P?
Gruv Gear Solostrap Neo. I also purchased the extra long extension tail strap so I can hang it way down low for rock shows.
Sounded great without the overdrive
Why is there a pickup cover where there's no pickup?
No idea, my guess would be for the looks, more chrome more better
@@petem8630 good point.
Colin Moulding used a Newport with flats on XTC'S Black Sea LP.
Please pay for your strings
Thank you!
That bass sounds great. Any idea where I could find an 82 model
Strings sound good. I usually get the daddarrio spirocores
Thank you for that.
I don't know what any of those words mean except "bass." Oh, and "double" and "string." No matter, sounds terrific.
Very cool! I love your skills.
Sounds good! How's the tension? Chromes are murdering the neck of my jazz bass.
Maybe go for low tension flats??
Even though using single coil, it does not sound like a jazz bass. Btw, i have one and upgraded to alnico pickup and change the neck distance to jazz bass standard
So it sounds like P bass you're saying
Pickguard shape means rock'n'roll!
Hi Pete , I found your test of a precision bass 79 with dimarzios from the 80's, I would like to ask if you have a similar test with the original pickups. Great instrument, congrats, great sound(you play a bit in the style of Boby Vega😉) I haven't had time to look through your collection, but I saw some more precs and thunder b's in there,so hopefully next time there will be more time for that, thanks.
Hey Adam, unfortunately the 79 P didn't come with original pickups or pots, it came with an old set of EMGs which sounded pretty good and sometimes i reinstall them depending on the style of music I play. Thanks for the comment, peace.
@@petem8630 thats why I found it.I check some old dimarzios for strat, couse I have many parts from pickups etc(I am luthier, repairman, pickup maker, experimentator😀😉)and I saw that cream prec.....so I had to wrote you, that it is amazing.+ And on another project I do now I testing P-bass pickup(keramic jolana, moded by me),so I am Intrs. how diferent is between alnico and ceramic etc(in one instrument) and .....so,nevermind,I found your test and I realy like it. That bass I workjn on is old Jolana D-bass(rick 4003?shape,but diferent hw+pups),now it will be PreciBacker😀,so I want to ne near real P bass sound.I have three pups.....so I will try made similar test, thank you for answer me,Have a great day!
I had that same bass years ago. Great playing bass and I loved it's simplicity.
sounds wonderfull I use this configuration , but I has an question, What pedal could I add to have more body in the sound, by connecting the pedal directly to the console?
Definitely the sansamp, it emulates a full bass amp sound while the boss has no amp emulation
Loud and clear. Nice bite and snap. Bright and usable. Aggressive but not unpleasantly harsh. Nice bass.
I have had that same bass since 1996 and still playing it today! Just wish I can find a 5 string version.
Hay mate, would you recommend this bass? One going cheap in my neighbourhood $450 aussie $. I play old school simple bass for cajun, folk, blues, country etc - flatwounds foam mute tones. Cheers Tom
If it's the Yamaha BB414 Circa 2000 Wine Red Burst that's on FB marketplace then I'll say go for it.
Thanks same as the one in the video - Echotone Northcote VIC. But still a good deal I recons! @@petem8630
