Hi, I'm flight simmer who loves flying anything VSTOL. I mostly fly helicopters but will also enjoy fixed wing aircraft when the mood takes me. My primary flight sims of choice are Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and and DCS (Digital Combat Simulator). Be sure to check out some of my reviews of different aircraft as well as my "Around The World At 80 Knots" series, in which I'm flying the Cabri G2 helicopter around the world in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, making stops along the way to take in the sights (and refuel).
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 ALPHA TEST - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Head to Head: 500E v H125 - If you can only get one, which should it be?
I find them easy to fly however, as some may know, my 407 or MD500e flys like its piloted by a drunk. Despite trying sensitivities at 0, or higher response. I even checked my in cockpit trim control, it was centered and still, whooooo owhhooooohooooo all over the place. I just dont know what Im doing wrong. What are your sensitivities set around?
My sensitivity settings are at the default. The 407 and 500e can both be a bit twitchy but with practice should fly ok. Maybe check your pedal bindings to make sure they set up right. Also experiment with the helicopter rudder assist in the settings. Sometimes it can help smooth things out although it can have an undesirable effect with some 3rd party helicopters.
@@flightsoficarus I have twist axis but ya, now just gotta find the right spot. I could not get anything right until I went into airplane choice, then after livery it says customization and wow, that did it right there for my choppers! I still have to refix the trim cuz I have to push forward and then my hand goes numb lol
I wish that the flight simulator companies would replicate these flight controls of the Bell 222A & Bell 222B. If they were made like that, there's no doubt in my mind that I would buy a set of them!!!! I mean.....think about it: there are similar controls for airplanes so.....why not the helicopters like the Bell 222A & Bell 222B?
I would definitely like to see more helicopter based controls available and Bell 222 does have a particularly unique collective. I imagine the issue is demand. Helicopter flight simmers still make up only a small portion of their potential market and they stand to make more money from plane controls. But it could make a fun DIY build. I might take a crack at it.
great review.. i agree the seat is not very comfortable. i bought this flight rig only for flightsimming. and ... in June 24 i got the motion plus unit ( 3000 €) and i am very happy with it. I only need the roll effect ( 20 degrees to both sides) and it is very well simulated in DCS esp. To my surprise there exists a FFB effect when rolling, stall etc and when shooting the guns. therefore i do not need the upcoming FFB-flightsticks. This shooting effects only work in DCS , not in IL 2 or Cliffs of Dover unfortunately. The software is very easy to install and works flawless.
Thanks. I really want the motion plus module but I'm going to have to have to save up for a bit.
Sadly, I did not get to test the Alpha. I am slowly upgrading my rig a little. Can't afford to upgrade the GPU, but have ordered one of two 32GB sticks of ram, which just arrived, today. I'll get the other one next month. I'm totally looking forward to flying the balloons, and blimps. I mostly fly light, GA planes, so this is going to be huge, next month. Thanks for sharing this.
Decent GPUs are insanely expensive. Occaisionally there are some good deals from second hand computer hardware stores. Memory is definitely a good less expensive upgrade. I tried the Hindenburg that was released for MSFS2020, it was really good immersive module but I could not the hang of flying it. I keep meaning to give it another go. I also tried the HPG Hot Air balloon, which was quite nice a chilled to fly, although landing took some practice. Lots of exciting new opportunities in 2024.
Yes, I tried the Alpha too, and had the same experiences. The controls can be copied from another airplane, I found the interface a bit confusing though. Not interested in the career mode at all.
Good to know the controls can be copied. I couldn't figure it out. It also seemed to be a bit unreliable saving the setups but I'm sure these things will get ironed before release.
Well, the main rotors would never be so rigid, when not in rotation, they would be drooping. I've also noted that the HF antenna if missing all together, from the aircraft. Lights in front of the aircraft's are not the the fixed configuration.
The copilot bit made me blurt out a laugh, hope the new game gives you all you want, still enjoying the videos mate.
Thanks. Yeah, I nearly had an accident the first time I turned round and was just right in my face 😂
I don’t like how you can’t slow down while flying or go down
You should be able to slow down by pulling the cyclic back just a little and adjusting the collective to maintain altitude. Although the issue I've had with this is that it's severely under powered and struggles to hover if you go too slow.
When I push forward on the stick I just spin like crazy
If you're using the pedals to compensate for the torque correctly and still spinning I'd check the bindings to make sure you have the axis bound correctly and also check that you haven't got anything bound your tail rotor/rudder axis that might be causing a conflict. Also what, helicopter are you using? Some can be more squirrely (pretty sure that's a word) than others. You might also want to reset the trim just to be sure.
Don't blame the TH-cam guy, named Icarus, if I crash?
I mean, you could try. But I doubt your local air authority would have a lot of sympathy.
This is really cool they still make it awesome mouth the guns and morters.
well done mate , I am doing some missions now and look forward to this one after watching your fine review !
Thanks. Hopefully, MSFS2024 will bring us many more missions like this.
I have been flying recently with VR as well, and I have to say my helicopter flying abilities have gotten hundred times better than what I used to be like. Most importantly, helicopters require very gentle and very precise inputs and they will look after you really well during the flight.
VR definitely provides a better sense of situational awareness when flying. I've tried on a flat screen, and I just can't get on with it. VR puts you right inside the helicopter.
Yes the Seat is so bad. I'm going to do the same thing you did. I am using a seat cushion now but yeah extra memory foam would help.
It's a shame. When they're charging that much money for a seat they could put more thought into making it comfortable. Otherwise though, I'm pretty happy with it.
Great review. I use the this rig for flight simming and have also made changes to accommodate different equipment. One thing you said is inaccurate though. You can contact Next Level Racing and purchase separate pieces of equipment. I recently added a couple of different mounting plates and mounts to mount my F-18 throttle on for quick change ability from my F-16 throttle. Long story short you can get whatever part you want separately. Just email them and send them a picture of the part you want.
Really? Is that on their website anywhere? If so, I must have missed it. That's good to know though. It would be good if it was available through their list of sellers but I imagine there's probably an efficiency of scale issue.
This was really cool mate, like the idea of the push away and hide away features you did and the concept for the joystick, especially if someone has mobility issues moving it completely would be good. Shame about the comfort, that is king when in it as long as people would be.
Thanks. The comfort issue can be resolved but when you spend this much on a chair, it really should be comfortable out of the box. Still I've no regrets, there are just a couple of things I think could be better.

Ahh the themesong is running in my head with the ladys howl..😂
hello. how to drop water? Out of mission
I don't think you can, unfortunately. It's triggered by flying low directly over the fire in the missions. I don't think there's a keybinding for it.
👍
Okay, mate. That "It'll all be over soon" made me laugh so hard. That is SO true!
Does the 222 have its autopilot implemented? The panel (under the rotor speed and torque indicators) doesn’t seem usable.
Not unlerss it's been added in an update I'm not aware of. It's only recently that MSFS flight model has supported any kind of helicopter autopilot. Some developers have developed their own autopilots by building they're own flight models but most didn't bother. However Cowansim do seem to update their aircraft every now and then so hopefully it'll become available in the future.
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 I still don't have an answer how to stop the right and left pendulum effect in mid-flight? How to turn on the instrument lights?🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
Penduluming is usually a result of over correcting. The controls on this helicopter are very sensitive and your ability to control it effectively maybe effected by your controller. If you're using a joystick you could adjust the sensitivity. If you're using a game console type controller then it would be extremely difficult. If you're struggle to get it to stablize you may want to adjust the stability in the flight model manager. If I remember correctly, there should be knob on the overhead panel to control the instrument lighting but it may be worth checking the documentation.
Hello! Is it better than the Cowan 500e?
Whether or not it is better than the 500e is pretty subjective to personal opinion and I've not flown the 500e much since it had it;s big update a while back. They're fairly even in terms of quality, which is surprising as they're made by the same people. If I were to choose which between the two which one I wanted to fly I'd probably pick the R66 over the 500e, but I'm sure there are many others who'd choose the 500e.
@@flightsoficarus thanks!
Apparently, the rear elevator is controlled automatically. It slants down in slow flight so that the rotor wash doesn't push the tail down, and it flattens out as the ship picks up speed.
Yes, I gathered this from flying the DCS version. However, with this version, the elevator doesn't move regardless of air speed. It is still in development though, so hopefully this will be addressed in due course.
Fantastic! Any chance you could show a video of this from the behind the plane view? Thx!
Thanks. I've got a bit of backlog of videos I'm working on at the moment but might be able to do this as a short at some point.
I don't think anyone would try to fly that without at least SAS on. You can stifle the GPWS voice nag by flipping an overhead switch
Oh man its such a tease putting a McDermott's livery on the Huey. Makes me want a 214B to fly that much more, but a 205 will do for now.
I appreciate your comparisons to DCS Huey, which I have been learning.. think I will hold off on this one for now and see what might be offered in msfs2024 for helis first :) and keep working dcs
Regarding textures, the DCS UH-1 is rubbish comparing with this one, with only one thing the div need to rework it: the pilot's lower body + their flight suite.
Question how did you get the outside view screen showing in on the cockpit view both at the same time. Is this on the same screen and can the outside and inside view both be seen in VR?
I recorded the inside shot in VR while flying with OBS studio and at the same time recorded the flight with SkyDolly. I then replayed the flight in 2D with from the SkyDolly recording in external view and recorded that again with OBS studio. Then it's just a case of finding key points I can use to sync the 2 up.
@@flightsoficarus I was thinking you did something like that but I was hoping it would be something else like old FSX when you could have an outside View; maybe upcoming mfss 24 will have the old outside of view available in cockpit view thanks for the quick reply
There are good and bad helicopters regardless of being free or not free.
DOES VOR NAVIGATION WORK? CAN YOU MAKE A TUTORIAL
Great question. I confess it's been a while since I did any VOR navigation, I mostly fly VFR or using GPS but I just had a go and yes you can. However, from my initial look around the cockpit it appears that you use the traditional avionics, you can only set up NAV1. If you want to use NAV1 & NAV2 you'll need to switch to modern avionics on the tablet by the copilots seat. But it might be a useful thing to do a tutorial video.
@@flightsoficarus I THINK A VOR NAVIGATION FLIGHT IS VERY EXCITING, AND I ALWAYS WONDER IF THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERS A GPS BREAKDOWN OR A SHOT IN THAT ELECTRONICS PART, HOW WE WILL DRIVE IT. FLYING BY GPS IS EASY AND WITHOUT CHALLENGES. IF YOU MADE A TUTORIAL, I THANK YOU BECAUSE I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO DO IT.google translate
VOR relies on the radio so suseptable to the same kinds of failures as GPS but it's it's a valuable skill that's definetly worth learning. Your ultimate fallback navigation is going to be VFR. If you plan your flight and work out bearings, estimated flight times and landmarks you can navigate quite effectively but you need to be paying attention. If you fly the bush trips, this is generally all setup for you, although there are no helicopter bush trips in the base game that I'm aware of 😔. You can just turn off the GPS and follow the flight log. It does take some practice though.
😍🚁 😛
How you get the rear doors to open/close?
There's click spots on the handles, although they are quite small.
I'm questioning how realistic this Huey is. The H doesn't have a rotor brake, that was a USMC request and showed up on the Marines E model, the US Army Hueys didn't have it.
shocking revelation. makes the helicopter completely unplayable
I also wonder why does it start right into the nominal rotor RPM. Didn't see when he rolled in the throttle.
@@BruceArtwickHe likely had the throttle on the collective at 100. If you start it with it on 25, like it do, it'll idle until you turn it up to 100.
That really was just trying to flex your knowlege wasn't it......?😅
Well, another one on mediocre standards :(
Excelente 👏
Thanks 😃
Great review! Can I ask what set up you use for cyclic, collective etc?
Thanks, my HOTAS is fairly basic. It's an old Thrustmaster HOTAS X but I recently invested in a Virpil Collective, which does make a big difference.
Nice video! Hey, Do you know what happens to DLC after MSFS 2024? Are they able to transfer without charge?
Thanks. My understanding based on all the updates I've seen is that all addons should transfer over without having to be repurchased.
This was a great review. I really like the Chinook much like all of Miltech’s products but I really wish they could do a better job on their metal switches. As I mentioned on your newer video of the Taog’s Hanger Huey, that is a great example of lifelike looking switches.
Looks nice, but I’m waiting for the Blackbird Simulations version. I believe it will be more of a study level version. Also it’s going to have working guns and rockets :). On a side note why are some devs like this one able to make metal switches look so lifelike but Miltech and DC Designs can’t. Their switches always look fake and cartoon like. I really like the Chinook but those overhead switches are just bad.
The Blackbird version does look good. I'm always up for a study level model but I'm not so enthused by the guns and rockets. The Shrike 530F was developed by a branch of Blackbird and although the weapons made noises and had flashing light effects, the nature of MSFS makes them a little lack luster. MSFS just isn't built for it. But I'm more interested in the aircraft than the ordinance and if it's as good as the previews suggest then it should be a good module.
And the Blackhawk. Check their T-6 it's an awesome module.
Nice flying! I know it’s scary, but try to get into VRS closer to the ground where you have more lateral reference or while doing a steep approach. I’ve had it kick in, but it won’t trigger unless you are almost in a perfect vertical descent. When it’s triggered, you can’t recover with collective.
Thanks. Airspeed read as zero but it can't hurt ot do more experimenting... other than potentially crashing but that only hurt virutally 😆. Thanks for the tip.
@@flightsoficarus airspeed will still show zero if you’re moving sideways or backwards ;) a sidestep is proper recovery. In real helis, you can’t trust the indicator below 15knts anyway. Keep making great videos!
That's a good point, they go sideways and backwards as well don't they 😆. That seems entirely possible. Thanks again for the tips.
Nice review. I've been pretty much flying this non-stop since it came out, def one of my favs if not my fav helicopter in the sim to date - and I own them all bar the scam releases! As far as the Msfs flight model goes, it's probably the best use of it I've seen so far, and coupled with a great frame rate in VR, sounds etc, it's really been hard even thinking of flying anything else this weekend! The flight model however did have me a little dubious before release, and i'm glad it turned out to be so surprisingly good, for not injecting in an external model. The price is also pretty good value imo, I can imagine the Blackbird release being a bit pricier, and given the features with this - it really would need to bring something new to the table to make it's release in any way competitive with this. Even if it's a different model of UH-1. Happy flying!
Thanks for the positive feedback. While the MSFS heli flight model has it's shortcomings, some developers are really starting to figure out how to get the best out of it and this is definitely a great example of what can be achieved. Honestly I was so busy keeping an eye out for the Blackbird version I almost glanced right over this one but I think they're going ot have to deliver something pretty special now. Mind you, I've seen some good stuff from their updates so we'll see.
Well, it’s going to have working guns and rockets for one.
@@johnwicks4936 Yeah but outside of a milsim they're just cosmetics. I thill havent used the h145 weaponry and ive had it since the release.
@@gflo2781 It’s immersion thing. If I’m going to fly a Huey around Nam listening to 69’s rock, I want some guns hanging off the side. Otherwise, why even make a military version.
How do you turn the HMD off?
Im trying to figure this out too. Anyone know how?
Hey man! I just recently got the 500E. I won't get the H125 anytime soon since it will be included in MSFS 2024 which I will be getting anyways. Great video and keep it up!
Thanks. I've been enjoying the H125 lately. There's been some significant updates since this video was made and it flies really nicely now but with MSFS2024 getting closer I can see the sense in waiting.
What HOTAS and rudder pedals do you use?
I'm currently using an old Thrustmaster Hotas X and the basic Saitek rudder pedals. I'm hoping to upgrade at some point but what I've got works for now.
Thank you! Do you use any assists?
@@anonymoushuman3575 No, I like to keep as much realism as I can.
Thanks for comparison, it is just awesome video.
lol I didn't know that my uncontrollable sudden drops from the sky had a name, VRS! Thanks for these tips.
Brilliant intro. Good work! I'm very tempted to get this helicopter. It is absolutely brilliant in Xplane and the FI 206 remains probably the best flight model of all the helis I've tried in MSFS.
The FI 206 and B-47 are both great helis. They are a little sensitive on the controls and some simmers are quite critical about it. But if you relax and make small gentle adjustments to the controls they fly very nicely.
Nice comparison thanks. Got the 500E in the sale today. Hopefully one day MSFS helis will get closer to the smoothness of Xplane.
Yup -- 10.75 GBP !
FS 2024 looks promising for heli development. Since Asobo gave us a basic helicopter flight model, they don't seem to have done much with it. But helis are becoming more popular so hopefully they'll get some more focus from the developers.
