His real name is フリーザ, or "Fureeza", how it would be pronounced. The thing about translating names from Japanese to English is that due to their letters working differently, if they try to say a word in english, or an english based word, they're gonna end up with a lot of extra vowels than we do. So when translating, you're gonna have to cut out all those extra vowels somehow, lest we end up with names like "Torankusu". But how can you determine which vowels are supposed to be there? You can't really know for sure, but you can take an educated guess. Dragon Ball usually makes it easy since most characters follow some kind of naming scheme. Take Bulma and her family, for example. All their names are related to underwear. Bulma's real name is ブルマ (Buruma) which could just be translated to "bloomer". Some versions of the series actually do just call her that. "Bulma" doesn't really preserve the joke that well, which is why I tend to prefer other translations for her name. All the other characters in her family, like Dr. Brief, also follow this same naming scheme. So, when we take a look at a character like Trunks, his real name is トランクス (Torankusu). We could translate it as "Tolanks" or as "Tranksu" or some other goofy shit like that, but we know that all the people from his family have underwear based names, so it makes sense for it to be "Trunks". So, when we see a character like フリーザ (Fureeza), he's the leader of an army full of characters that have food-based naming schemes, specifically the sort of food you put in fridges, so his name being a pun on freezer would make sense. "Freeza" is the best one for two reasons. The first one is because "Freezer" is written with 2 e's, not an e and an i, so it preserves the origin of the pun. The second one is because, unlike someone like Bulma, whose name could (and sometimes is) just translated as "bloomer", this character's name isn't actually Freezer. In Japanese, the word "Freezer" would be written like フリーザー, and the name of this character is written as フリーザ. Notice how the first one has two ー's, but the second only has one of them. That letter, in Japanese, means an extended vowel, or an emphasis placed on that specific part of the word. The second ー is there to best replicate the sound of the r at the end of "Freezer", since Japanese doesn't have a letter that makes that sound. This sound meant to replicate the '"r" isn't there on Freeza's name, which means the "r" on the original word isn't in Freeza's name. This is also the reason we pronounce Vegeta's name as "Vegeeta" even though that sounds different from the word he's a pun of, "Vegetable". Vegeta also has a ー, right after the "ge", so that part of his name is more pronounced. Freeza is the best name because it maintains the most of the original word it's trying to be a pun of, unlike Frieza, which while being a technically correct translation, strays farther from the pun than Freeza, and also because there is no "r" sound at the end of Freeza's Japanese name, so putting one in would be a wrong translation.

@@kenny6643 フリーザ <--- none of this is "i". there is no "i" in there. whenever his name is written in the latin script (the one we use in english) they always write his name "FREEZA". There is no "I" in his name. That was added by funimation solely for the anime. Its not in japanese manga, or anime, and its not in the english manga either. The funimation anime (and the games that stole its spelling) are the only things that use the "i".

there is no I in "Trunks". Briefs is his grandpa's name (on his mothers side, obviously). Bulma's family has no "last name".

@Wes Falcon Correct yourself, "G.O.D" is an acronym meaning God of Destruction. Kais are gods but exist at much lower levels than the Gods of Destruction and their attendants.
