Pilot Ep.: The Boat That Wanted To Be Found
มุมมอง 10K3 ปีที่แล้ว
What's more exciting than stumbling onto an ultra-rare wooden power boat that's been locked away in a barn for 50 years? Restoring it to its original glory! Barn Finds are the Holy Grail of the classic boating hobby, and one exceptional example is the subject of Mahogany & Chrome's® first episode. Over 2 days of intensive filming at Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, we heard non-stop about an extremel...
Awesome footage! I’m appreciating these old wooden works of art more and more. I’m over here in Minnesota. It’s curious if you get any calls from Mahogany Bay? As you can probably tell. It’s a little wood boat restoration shop out west of Minneapolis. Wondering if you’ve had to find the impossible part of a restoration. Maybe y’all did some horse trading? For all I know, you might have been doing business with each other for the last twenty years. I do t think that the wooden boat enthusiasts world is that big. You’d almost have to run across one another sooner or later.
Thanks so much for your comment and for watching our show. We are familiar with Mahogany Bay, but have not interfaced with them...yet. Hopefully we can connect with them. Thanks for the head's up.
Beautiful objects of craftmanship.
Inspiring!
🥰
The Boat with the Reg number NY 3861 AS is "The Arc" and belongs to Jim from Grenell Island. The boat was built by Fry in Clayton more then 100 years ago. The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton own the sister boat "Shadow" which is on Display at the Doebler Storage. Body line drwawings of the Shadow can be obtained from the Museums Online archive . The video also shows Boldt's Castle and boat house. Boat Number 3 in the boat house is one of 19 built "number boats"
Awesome details and input. Thanks so much for providing this extra information - and for watching!
It could be the new Antique Boat on the Seneca River
Most old wooden boats are well cared for until they are handed over to the next generation of custodians. This process continues the heritage, and also keeps the knowledge and skills of boat building alive. Without doubt, the world is a nicer place with these wooden wonders on the water! 😉
Well I gotta give it to ya guys. I watch absolutely zero tell lie vision so whatever viddy yo stimulation i receive, i get off of YT or Epoch TV, Rumble, etc. That said; to stumble across this channel and spend an hour looking at some of the baddest water sleds from decades before fibreglass trees of which i used to own two the latter being a 1973 Ski Nautique. Sure miss laying down on my slalom skis on her and wakeboarding to1o. Her name was "Emotional Rescue" and I'd love to know if she's still out there somewhere in reverse rotation, confusing the hell out of her newest lion tamer?😅
Don't buy a wood boat.... I have owned many of them.. The biggest was a 106 schooner, (1918) and a 45 ft 1964 Huckins Fairform Flyer.. And have run many... Boatyards also will not haul old wooden boats...
Thanks for your comment. Everyone has a unique experience with wood boats. Most of our content and audience are focused on run-abouts and small cruisers that are handled, preserved or restored much easier than the big boys with which you have experience.
I get it that you are interviewing people, but while you are talking, could you show more of the boats?
Humans are geniuses
I'm a Chris Craft man @ 68 yrs of age. There's a CC in a barn in Danville, Indiana that is huge,my only problem is I cannot remember how to get back there & the friend I went with passed away,I'm 99.9% sure it's still there, I keep driving around...I will find it , I hope I do anyway
Well let us know if you figure it out! We are working on a potential barn find episode now - exciting stuff! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Really appreciate it.
Wish I could have been there... It was a pleasure talking with you on the phone. Look into George Crouch and do an episode of his designs, potentially.
Thanks very much for the suggestion. We will look into it!
This is a delightful show, hope to see more
Thank you so much! We have wrapped production on our next episode, and are in post-production at the moment. Each episode is fairly substantial undertaking with a large crew and extensive travel. Comments from viewers, like you, are very encouraging and sustaining. We really appreciate all of our viewers and subscribers!
Awesome video. My dad has a 1931 Dee white 19ft split cockpit that needs to be restored at some point. My dad found it in a garage in Detroit. There definitely is not much info on these old boats luckily I found this video.
What a great find! Glad someone has it. Feel free to send us photos of it. We'd love to see it. Thanks for watching!
Seen you guys at Howard's classics boats at the show I'm his apprentice thanks for sharing.
Thanks for commenting! We hope to get back down there and film some more!
I see a Philbrick boat in the pictures. We had one, I was glad when we got rid of it. Our Glidercraft V-drive was a much better boat. My dad sold it when I went to Vietnam. I wish he had kept it.
How about an article on Clearlake California, specifically upper lake. Thats where the racing was in Nor Cal. Actually guys came up from LA to race there. We used to stay in Soda Bay, but since the racing was either in Nice or Lakeport we eventually moved to Lakeport with the boats. When I was a kid we had exclusive use of Pigs beach. It was a great place to teach waterskiing. Sandy bottom shallow enough tha you would beach your boat 20 ft from shore and wade to the beach with your blankets and coolers. Being that the ski club was involved in racing it was important to have a good place to teach. Chuck Sterns learned to ski the same day thst I did. I was a late bloomer. Most kids in the club could ski by the time they started grammar school, 6 to 8 yrs old. I didn't learn until I was 12. I should say that I already knew how, just hadn't done it yet. At this point its been years and I am getting nostalgic.
This is great information from a viewer. Our audience members know facts and details we might never find on our own. We'll add Clearlake to the list. We may have to reach out to you for tips and contacts. Thanks very much.
Hmmmmmmmmmm, how many of these boats were rum runners?
A fair number. We have an upcoming episode that touches on this. Thanks for watching.
Love your channel and looking forward to many more videos. On the small lake in Michigan in 1969 it was all Mahogany and Chrome.
We are so glad you are enjoying the channel! Thank you for taking the time to comment. We are actually going into production on a new episode this week.
Poor guy had no chance deep water start with a modern thin slalom ski 😂 my dad use to ski behind a 1956 16’ Lyman I believe but it definitely has the old brown cover 35hp Johnson motor with skis he made himself which I still have. He was 180lb at that time and he would drag quite awhile before getting up. That was 1969 😇
The kid was a real sport, and a much better skier than I would ever have been. Glad to hear the story about your Dad. Thank you for sharing it.
I trust your ramblings take you to Algonac Michigan. Love to see these old boats, I remember them from my growing up in the Great Lakes.
Yes - we certainly hope to make to Algonac in the near future. Thanks for commenting!
Been there many times. It is Americana at its best.
Year round?
Alexandria Bay is where I was first introduced to the wonderful world of wooden boats !!! … close by , at the headwaters of Black Lake is where I experienced the heady feeling of opening one up with just a 40 hp outboard !!! … part of the Thousand Islands DNA !!!
What a great introduction! There is so much wood boating history there. Plus, seems like a great place to vacation - lots to see and do!
Well done! A great vacation destination for sure!
Tom - thanks so much for watching. We can't wait to get back to the Thousand Islands. Filming is definitely work for us, and we are fortunate to visit amazing places - but without our families. We're hopeful we can take them there, and really to all the waterfront destinations we go, so they can enjoy them as well. Hope to see you out there!
Great presentation!!! Sending beautiful boat vibes from NJ

Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. We hope to get to Ontario some day and explore more of those wonderful, Canadian-built boats.
AWESOME VIDEO! That's my kids and I at 30:45. It was our first time visiting 1000 Islands from Ohio We loved everything about the area. Great video. I cannot wait to share with my children!
That's very cool! It was our first time in the 1,000 Islands, too - for most of our crew. It is a fantastic place to visit - so much to see and do. Thanks very much for taking the time to watch the show and comment!
Just curious - how did you find our show?
@@mahoganyandchromeshow you mentioned the channel's name when you were filming. I subbed in August. Then as Tom Petty said, "The waiting is the hardest part." 😆
@@sockeatinggolden8316Ah - sorry about that. It took much longer than we hoped to edit. We have other full-time work which we have to prioritize. Thanks for your patience, and for subscribing!
@@mahoganyandchromeshow No worries. It was worth the wait!

Very good, all members would love this plus others can see how much fun and interesting this hobby is!
Thank you watching and commenting. With every episode we produce, we find the history of these boats, boat owners and boat builders grows even more fascinating. It truly is owning or experiencing a piece of history, and it's fun, too. Thanks again!
Can't wait for the episode!
We can't wait to show our tour of Antique Boat America!
Love these videos. This one seems to indicate a move toward being advertisements. Not sure I’m looking forward to that.
Totally amazing! My brother owned a chris craft double cockpit in 1965. I still remember it fondly. Thanks for sharing your time and talent! KANSAS
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. We're always on the hunt for more wooden boat stories. And, we just wrapped production of a new episode shot in the Thousand Islands region of New York.
I love this!!!!💖💖💖 and I’ve missed seeing Tyler Harcott. He’s not afraid to dig in and he’s super easy to follow. More please!!!!
Ty is a pro and definitely not afraid to get his hands dirty. We're trying to incorporate more "hands-on." More to come. Thanks for commenting!
Congratulations Murray, you managed to get hold of the most beautiful cold molded mahogany boat on the planet. I have been admiring this boat for years. Bravo Coeur Customs. A true marvel.
Love the show!
Thank you very much for watching, and for the feedback! We appreciate it!
It was great meeting you and the crew at the show, this episode is great. I’m sharing everywhere I can!
Likewise! It was wonderful to meet you all. Thank you so much for sharing!
I was 11 years old staying at my uncle’s place on Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. One of his friends drove a 6 cylinder Chris Craft wide open past our dock. Still remember the growl of that motor and the shiny wood. That was 61 years ago. I was hooked on wooden speed boats from then on. Thanks for this tremendous video.
Thanks very much for watching. Stories like yours resonate with so many people. These boats make lasting impressions on people.
We're hooked! Oh wait, we already were. We especially love the "gray boats" that we find, weathered beyond most folks recognition, the ones that were waiting for a ride to the landfill. It's rewarding to restore them and return them to their natural habitat. Great video, nice job weaving the history in with the restoration. Huzzah!
Thank you very much! We're very glad people like you continue to divert these boats from destruction. We're working on a new episode - just wrapped a week in the Thousand Islands.
Great job on this video!!!
Thank you so much for watching! We really appreciate it.
Great job!!!!! Thanks for the great effort. Hope this will draw more young folks into the hobby.
Thank you, sir! We hope so, too!
Awesome
