The World of MtG Deck Archetypes
มุมมอง 4K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are countless number of different decks you can construct when playing Magic: the Gathering. While each deck is a beautiful and unique snowflake, we tend to also use common language when describing them as a quick shorthand for communicating what a deck is and wants to do. If you have ever been confused by words like "aggro", "control", or "midrange", then this video is for you! Next week...

Nile's Bat Heist MTG Challenge!! (first ever!)
I feel like I do the opposite. When I’m winning I’m quick to notice that my opponent has missed a couple land drops Or it feels totally unearned when I top deck the removal spell after my opponent drops a game ending bomb. But also lots of times the land system is just totally fucked and i mulliganed the perfect hand against my opponent but how could I know that in 5 turns I would never see a second source of white mana.
OK I don't get this. I just need to see all my cards. Like arranged as if I would on a playmat. There's the playtest. But how to actually see and arrange my cards?
“This title is a crazy amount of copium” - my gut reaction. I was def conflating ppl who lash out when they lose which you mention
did you know,,, that ur name has two rivers in it,,,,,,,
Wow thank you. Thinking this way will definitely help me improve my game.
I’m not sure I’ve ever been self-aware enough to notice what I do right while tilting. But I definitely noticed when I started doing paper tournaments that at first I really had to think about just moving through the game mechanically correctly, and then after more practice I stopped having to do that so much. So that was a shift of some stuff into unconscious competence that I was able to notice.
I'm obviously a perfect gamer and would never tilt due to variance or misplaying BUT should I ever find myself in such a situation, I'll def have to keep this advice in mind
thank you for this insightful video Nile :) i've never thought about utilising tilt in this way before
I *never* get tilted, because I'm the best magic player around.
I love this! Growth mindset is something I feel super passionately about and I think that “weaponizing our tilt” is a great strategy!
How do I fix being tilted that Siege Rhino isn't modern playable anymore?
Your content has been on point, I don't recall seeing other mtg creators cover this.
Great video with lots of good advice, thank you for making it! I liked when Uncle Ben showed up! 💜💜💜
That's my secret, Nile. I'm always tilted.
Another amazing video by the goat
I'm surprised to find that a lot of comments here are in favor of golgari. I thought it was slept on quite a bit. It's really awesome color combo.
The old rules made attacking feel risky and rewarded the blocking player for outsmarting their opponent, incentivising players into defensive tactics. These new rules put some of that power back into the attacking players court without completely snubbing defending players, when interpreted and enforced properly.
This is a great video. I always teach new players in a specific way. I’ve been running our magic night for almost two decades, and have a set of loaner decks that I use to teach new players. Night 1. 2 games with a Mono Red Aggro CEDH deck I designed that is simple and fast with no hidden mechanics or heavy theory crafting. Week 2: Riders of Rohan, and teach them how to manage multiple mana colors from multiple mana sources. Week 3: Combo Night. I use Stella Lee and Quick Draw to teach them how to build a combo engine. By the time this is finished, I find they have a base strong enough to play without training wheels, but I always recommend they stay away from control or other specialty decks until they have at least 20 games under their belts with no more than two decks that they get to learn instantly. I currently have a collection of about 230 CEDH (all but a few precons ever made, and the rest my own personal creations) decks, so I let them choose a couple or they inevitably buy their own decks. 17:40
Any chance you could add a written ruleset to the primer on moxfield? Something like, 1. Cait, Cage Brawler starts on the battlefield as a pre-game action and is not affected by summoning sickness. 2. Draw a starting hand of 5 cards. There are no mulligans. (Unless you want to) 3. Start with 20 life. You win by reducing the opponent's life to 0. 4. Skip your draw step each turn. 5. You do not lose the game for drawing from a deck with no cards.
Aaaare you telling me that this hasn't been the case for years already? I have been playing Magic wrong.
Innkeeper's talent is superior in almost every way to Doubling Season. Huge fan of that card.
Thanks for explaining the main deck archetypes in such a succint way! I'm a somewhat new player, so it sure does help content like yours. Subbed.
definitely learned a few terms here! though it was a missed opportunity to call out mana dorks (hehe, dorks) when talking about Llanowar Elves looking foward to more!
I'm not a fan of draft, but I think your content is well done.
Fantastic video. Excellent job you two!
Great content, as always Thanks for the video
Great stuff! Wish this came out a couple weeks ago before I got destroyed in my first limited event tho lmao
New Nile video lets gooooo
Nile continues to be the best thing to happen to new players, and Ethan continues to crush everything put in front of him. Also, special shout out to the editing on this video. Top shelf stuff.
@@MTG_Scribe thank you so much i worked so hard on the editing 😭
Great conversation and advice. I’m a bit of a magic beginner, so these were great.
Hey, if any of the cage match decks are still available, I'd love to buy one as a Christmas present.
Such good advice!
This video, like all of your videos, was super informative and approachable. I appreciate your effort to make as many formats as possible as accessible as possible. Framing competitive magic as a chance to watch yourself improve is what so many people need to hear! Winning is secondary, the main challenge is learning how to improve yourself as a brewer, a pilot, and a member of the community.
@@Fornost42 thank you so much! I put a ton of effort into breaking down somewhat complex ideas into approachable and accessible information, so it means a lot to hear that I'm succeeding in that endeavor 💚💚
Howdy! Is there a written instruction anywhere? If so, could it be added here and/or the moxfield primer? I just got the cards in using your referral link and am excited to give it a spin. :D Cheers!
@@wastelanderghoul actually splendid idea That doesn't really exist rn, but I'll try to get it up there this weekend :)
@nilejoanrivers hell yeah, thank you! <3 I just got to my friend's house for our commander night. Before people show up, we're gonna give Cait's Cage Match a spin. 😎
@wastelanderghoul 💚💚 let me know what you think!
Just found you. I really enjoy how knowledgeable you are. Thank you
Awwww thank you so much 💚💚
I am PRAYING the green players see this and it's not the doubling season for the next 5 years
Great points about the removal card pool. I opened those cards in my paper prerelease and am now second guessing buying more of them.
Probably just worth waiting a bit to see how things shake out! :)
I don't like the change, it babies aggressive decks and oversimplifies things/punishes smart players. I hate any change that dumbs the game down, this 100% makes combat brainless.
I'm sorry you don't like the change, but I'd like to push back on the idea that this over simplifies combat I think it just moves the complexity to a different part of combat Now more of the decision point will be after attackers but before blocks Because now you want to cast your tricks before blocks to force the attacker into a position where they have to respond to the tricks before you declare. This gives you more info and is an exchange that will still reward strategic gameplay Just a different way of looking at it :)
The head bobbing got me dizzy, I love it. You convinced me not to craft the Conqueror, which I was seriously considering for the combo.
i can't help it i talk with my whole body lol glad to have talked you down on the conquerer tho :)
she's right
If you already have 4 Sunfall then there's really not much reason to craft 4 Day of Judgment unless your deck benefits from creatures dying and or going to the grave. Primal Might isn't what it used to be, buffing your crearure is nice but this obviously leads to some instant speed removal blow outs. Better of just playing Hard Hitting Question which also hits Planeswalkers. Unless your playing Elves in BO3 crafting rare Wilt-Leaf Lieges over uncommon Baloths seems like a waste.
4 is less than 5 disagree on the hard hitting question comment hard hitting question is a good card, but primal might is a good card that can also win games on its own
PRE is one of my favorite formats. I love to PRE. Just enough "here for fun" and "here to win". A few of my LGS's do even prizing for everyone, so you don't have to worry about going 0-3.
That's sick! I love the prizes for everyone :)
Sorry to have to disagree on one: Been cruising to diamond with bloodthirsty conqueror in historic constructed in less than a day. Just throw in starscape cleric, Vito, Enduring Tenacity and exquisite blood and you have a VERY consistent combo kill on turn 5. Add some grim tutors and duskfall landings and you can search/seek for the combo pieces since they're vampires. Oh and I even managed to semi-regularily kill on turn 3 or 4 by cheating out the conqueror with Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord.
I believe you that it is good for historic but this is talking just about Standard Congrats on the sick bloodthirsty conquer run tho!! Keep it up all the way to mythic :)
@nilejoanrivers ah yeah, sorry didnt realize that. In that case, yes, you shouldnt craft it for standard, I agree. Just not enough enablers in it right now.
@@pervertesacker7131 I wish we could have locked horns. I love destroying all those “can only win with a broken combo” gotcha decks. See you soon hopefully 🤞
I'd say don't craft anything, unless you are a whale don't craft cards, craft decks. Getting excited about single cards will just leave you with a hodgepodge of cards that are good in a vacuum but have no actual playable decks.
That's why i said these are staple cards for people who want to *brew* decks Of course just crafting the cards for the deck you need is ideal, i say as much in the video!
It's an interesting one, but I think a card to keep an eye on is the new Kiora, the Rising Tide. I like to think of her as a fixed blue Fable. Being able to fix your hand with the draw 2, discard 2 is good. And at 2U, it's a very splashable effect. Coupled with the fact she makes an 8/8 in the mid to late game if she does stick with a very easy condition to meet, it makes her worth considering.
yeah i was veryyyy close to including her but thought she was a little borderline in terms of being a staple. VERY excited to play her tho
Luckily you get a Doubling Season for free in the pre-built deck for those who really want it.
I was blown away that Day of Judgment wasn't on Arena yet somehow so I had to craft those this morning.
Gonna see a ton of play for sure!
@@nilejoanrivers casting it right now....
It *was* on Arena. At mythic rarity (Strixhaven's supplemental set, Mystical Archives)
I heard you were selling these at Cubecon, but I couldn't find you after I found that out. Any chance you're still selling them with that awesome box?
Loved the video! And it was really cool seeing you at Cubecon this year!
thank you very much on all counts :)
I'm appreciating how many of the 'yes do craft these' rares are from the previous few years of standard so i already have them on arena ;-)
it *is* nice to have amassed a bit of a collection over time :)
