Finding Your Target Audience - Deciphering Writing Advice
Finding your target audience as an author can be a challenge and there's a lot of advice floating around out there about creating an avatar (a "Target Tracey" if you will) but what do you do if you can't figure out who your Target Tracey is? If all the advice just seems like making another character to play with? Well, then you get clearer on your offer.

Why I Don't Count The Number Of Books I've Sold

Story Structure Can Be Simple (but it's also utter BS)

For some people story structure is methodical, like following a recipe laid out in a book to get exactly the results they want. Some good non-human non-binary representation exists in the webcomic Tamberlane. The only human character is a child and all the other characters are a community of anthropomorphic animals who live in a rural village called Treehollow. A couple characters in the story are non-binary in some way. There's a non-binary corgi character named Tagg who appears in chapter 3 and an agender pine marten named Ainsley who in my opinion is the comic's cutest character.

    Nice video! I'm writing a fanfiction with a bi man being shipped monogamously with a woman, and it's a setting where "bisexual" doesn't exist as a label. My approach for portraying his bisexuality mostly boils down to these two points: 1. He is shown to be attracted to people other than his love interest, but those connections usually don't develop into much, unlike the pages-upon-pages of chemistry built between him and the love interest. I don't want to confuse readers about what the ship is. (His bisexuality actually began with me accidentally adding homoerotic subtext to the scene where he meets the male villain for the first time, so I decided to just... accept the bi-ness.) 2. He comes from a culture that constantly erases queerness and pushes compulsory heterosexuality, while his love interest comes from a world where being queer is as normal as being cishet. Thus she is one of the first people he can share this part of himself with (when it becomes natural for him to bring up, that is). It also ties into his eventual motivation for wanting both cultures to coexist and learn from each other, so that he doesn't have to worry about hiding a part of himself. I'm not bi myself, but I am a heteromantic asexual, and so I do relate to and want to see bisexual characters be in monogamous m/f relationships and still be depicted as valid and visible in their queerness. It may not be my orientation, but there are some things bisexuals experience that I relate to, and some kinds of representation that I want to see as well. If I saw someone erasing or ignoring a character's bisexuality, I'd feel just as hurt as if they were erasing a character's asexuality, hence why I want my character's bisexuality to be clear and visible, even in a "straight-passing" relationship.

    I’ve heard that Amazon kdp cream paper is whiter than Ingram. Is this true and is it noticeable?

    • @nopoodles
      @nopoodles ปีที่แล้ว

      It used to be, when I first got my kdp and Ingram spark copies of Merry Arlan: Breaking The Curse I noticed that the kdp copy was whiter and asked my wife if she could see it too. She couldn't spot the difference and said it was probably my author perfectionism at play, that any difference was so minimal that nobody but the author would likely notice. But with subsequent books I hadn't noticed the disparity, so I went and checked all my copies for you and, with my upcoming novel that releases in June, I can't see any difference in the colour of the paper. So my most up to date answer is I don't think there's a difference, and my longer term answer is that any difference is barely noticeable. Hope this helps :)

    Diminuendo vs crescendo is an amazing way to think about this! For me, crescendo is an excuse and I put off the "scary" task indefinitely. But I get a lot done if I do the big thing first. Also, I love scriviner but when I'm stuck I find scribbling on paper helps. Sometimes I make a list, sometimes I just scribble ideas, a lot of times there are arrows looping back and around. :D But when the actual words start to flow, writing is too slow, and I return to the computer. Love your videos, so glad I've found you.

    I was really worried with the bury your gays trope until I realized there are many more happy/long lasting lgbt couples in my story.

  • @JoleCannon
    @JoleCannon ปีที่แล้ว

    So, I thought I was writing an m/m romance (I'm an out gay man, who has been with his partner for 13 years), and I see these tropes in the m/m romances. After research, I've discovered m/m romances are written by women for women to satisfy some fantasy (it depends on the woman), and my love story falls more into LGBTQ+ fiction I guess. I hate that m/m romance has been overtaken by those not in the LGBTQ+ community. Either way, I wanted to make a comment on number 2. I've read this trope, and it's rarely done well. I have 3 outlines I'm working on, and one of them is the closet gay character who is afraid to come out because of his indoctrination in the Catholic Church. He's 37 and coming to terms with it. His love interest is the one who helps him overcome this fear with patience, understanding, and support. I think that's what's missing from these straight m/m writers. They don't know the struggle, and haven't done enough research on it.

  • @lexybaginsky
    @lexybaginsky ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a great idea! I may have to resort to this too as I just can't concentrate on my book-to-finish because this new idea keeps bombarding me. And if I stop, I won't finish it at all...

    Would your advice be different if the character is set in a queernormative world?

    • @nopoodles
      @nopoodles ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not :) It's not just about the world you set your characters into, you have to bear in mind the world your readers live in too because the reader's world will inform their understanding of the characters and the plot. The particular beauty of writing a queer-normative world state is that you can have as many nonbinary characters as you like and nobody inside the story will question it, haha

    Very interesting video! I have a short story where I call my main character “the painter” the entire time until he gets named at the very end of the story (cause he doesn’t remember his name lol) but thankfully it’s a two person story and the second character is his daughter! So pronouns aren’t a huge issue (at least I hope!)

    • @nopoodles
      @nopoodles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely think that's one of those exceptions. If he's "the painter" all the way through then it trains the reader into seeing that as a name all the while familiarising them with seeing it on the page, plus it's part of the plot that he doesn't remember his name. In the unedited version of this video I went off on a whole ramble about using alternate titles as names but when I was editing I thought it just muddied the point so I cut it out
