    In the recently released Can "Autobiography" All Gates Open, Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) recalls the following story: "Can was massively important for me - even though my relationship started only in 1991. I was working in London on the demos for the first Portishead album at someone's house, which had a studio in it. In the kitchen there was a radio that was always playing. It was at night when I went to the kitchen to grab a beer, and there was a track playing on the radio that immediately attracted my attention. [...] I literally thought it was the best band in the world. I honestly thought that this was the music that was made for me. So I grabbed the cassette, banged it into the tape recorder unit of the radio and started to record. The song was already about three-quarters of the way through. Mark E. Smith [of the Fall] was hosting the show on Radio 1 and he mumbled something about 'Can' and 'Vitamin C'. I didn't know whether the band was called Vitamin C and the track 'Can' - or vice versa. I had no clue. The next morning, I drove back to Bristol, where I went to this record shop and asked for a track called 'Can' by Vitamin C. The guy at the record store was a real asshole. He knew exactly what I was looking for, but he said he'd never heard of it. He was one of those typical, sort of anal record-collector guys. He owned a record shop, but he wouldn't sell me a record. But there was a customer in the store who lifted the secret. So I went over to the shelf, pulled it out, and there it was: Ege Bamyasi. I ran home, put it on and I just couldn't comprehend it. Especially when I read in the credits that this was a record from 1972." (389-90) ;) (And thank you for the video, btw, I am trying to figure out this groove but those quick kick patterns are tough!)

    Apart from w-a-y too much talking he didnt do my fav diddle bouncy beat! Try this folks. Do paradiddles on closed hi hats slow at first, but bring left accent onto snare-using B/D on the one. Adding 16th note doubles or triplets on bass drum gives a great funky bounce feel. Experiment on cymbal bell R/H or open hats here or there for a nice bitta spice! In your head it sounds BUM..TSHH...BUM BA BUM..TSHH..BA BUM..TSHH..BUM BA BUM TSHH..BUM BUM...TSHH..ETC. (Sorry i diddnt learn to read music but in 45 years of pub bands,and few studio demo's but hope it makes sense!)

    • @5-minutedrumlessons
      @5-minutedrumlessons 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I usually count, 1 & a, not 1 e &, but there are different ways to count it. Just keep in mind that it is only 3 notes, so the « a » you’re referring to doesn’t exist in the triplet, it only exists in the 4 note subdivision (the sixteenth note)

    Are those sticks flexible? Like some kind of rubber on the striking end?

    • @5-minutedrumlessons
      @5-minutedrumlessons 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah they're made of plastic so do have some flex to them. They're a plastic version of the "hotrods" which are made from wood, these ones are called "blasticks". I'm sure they have lots of different names but that's how I know them. The flex in them can actually be a bit annoying, but they're cool for low volume practice and are super durable. The wooden hotrods feel a lot more like a stick and feel better in my opinion, however they break pretty quickly and are expensive! I keep a pair of each on hand so I can play the plastic ones when I'm banging away and the wooden ones for more "serious" practice. Anyway, there's your novel of an answer to a very straightforward question! Haha

      @@PilafIsACookingMethod Yes, you're correct about it being a match grip video. I do play a little traditional, definitely not to the same level, but the approach to the technique is theoretically the same, try to get one note on the way down and one (or more) on the way up. I'll do a little video discussing it! Like I said though it's not my main thing. There's one guy on youtube I think his name is Quincy Davis, he does a lot of higher level jazz stuff and plays traditional, if you can find him talking about Moeller I bet he has some good insights. Another BEAST is John Wooton, he's traditional and has the vic firth series rudiment videos that absolutely crush. If you can find him talking traditional Moeller that would be the way to go!

    The band is called Can and the song Vitamin C. Can is one of the greatest krautrock band. You should add an erratum. ;)

      Aw man thanks for that, something did feel off about it. I will correct what I can, but unfortunately there's nothing we can do about the idiot in the video! 😅
