Winter driving electric car highway efficiency in SR RWD Mach-E! Road trip? Charlottetown Moncton
Knowing where to charge makes or breaks any EV road trip. We recently drove to Moncton, which has the most impressive EV charging infrastructure East of Quebec, and most certainly in the Maritimes.
As much as I wanted to DC fast charge, it just wasn't necessary. If we needed the chargers, they were available, but knowing which stations are worth going is still a Russian roulette of malfunctioning chargers, charging gridlock, or price gouging. More on that in an upcoming video.
Last, beware idle fees. As more chargers come online, I can't wait for idle fees to go the way of the dodo, especially at L2 chargers.
When I first plugged in, the car would have finished charging at 3 am. I would have been charged until I unplugged the car, even if it wasn't drawing power. This is fair at high traffic places, but if you're sleeping at a hotel... who wants to get up and unplug?

When it gets cold, and I mean really cold, what happens when you don't have a garage? Glad to say, cold weather range loss is will not leave you stranded and cold, waiting for a tow truck. If you're not on a road trip, you don't need preconditioning, as the car functions just fine without it. Jump in, and romp away. I didn't think of how long I spent waiting for the gas cars to warm up until ju...

Ground clearance in the Mach-e is quite low, which is great for handling and efficiency, but heightens the risk of raising the driving wheels off the ground if you can't push through deeper packed snow. Luckily the weight of the battery packs helps increase the traction on the snow tires to maintain control of the vehicle, though stopping distances are longer. 2023 Mach-E RWD Fitted with Goodye...

I was slightly hesitant about getting the RWD Mach-E after 10 years in Subaru Impreza AWD. Curiosity won me over, as I wanted to experience electronic traction control to compare. You'd think that the RWD would be a constant rodeo with a winter storm bearing down, but I'm glad to say the car is super well mannered. 2023 Mach-E RWD Fitted with Goodyear Ultra Grip® Performance Tires 72 kWh lithiu...
Level 2 slow charging, not that slow

What happens when you wake up to a low battery and a busy Saturday? A few minutes of panic, obviously. After that, a few minutes with a hair dryer and problem solved. I always suggest even having the slowest level 2 charger if you drive a full EV. It's remarkable just how quick even the slowest level 2 compares to basic level 1 charging. The slowest level 2 charger is 7x faster than level 1, an...

A-Dolla-Cents, the electrification trade-off
มุมมอง 174หลายเดือนก่อน
Driving an EV does require some trade offs vs hybrid cars especially. But those trade offs come along with some unreal benefits, if roadtrips are low on your list of priorities. Just get a hybrid, skip the plug in, and reel in some savings with no major habit change. If you're not afraid to try something new, and root can charge 1x or 2x a week, driving an EV is the best way to save the most mo...

You be the Judge. Art Hill Ford in Merrillville In. Fraud or not? I have been charging my 2023 Ford Mustang mach-E at "EV stations, Two free stations and many times at Home on 240 receptacle. AOK Then one day I attempted to charge at home. When I checked after a couple of hours. I seen my car was not charged. I looked at the charging unit. The blue light was flashing YELLOW. I unplugged and plugged in again. Within a minute the blue light again changed to flashing Yellow. I made an appointment for service. I drove to Art Hill. I plugged in at the station in the back of Art Hill. I charged for 2 1/2 hour. I went in for my appointment. I talked to Service manager "Brian (Coach) Dempsey. I explained that my home 240V is defective. The blue light changes to flashing Yellow within a minute. it will not charge my car. I sat for over 3 hours. Brian Dempsey called to his station. He told me that the "CAR'S receptacle" was bad. The Home charging unit was AOK. I demanded to have my unit hooked up to a Different Ford Mach-E. he told me they Sold all their Mach-Es. "They do not have one to check my home unit." I had to make an service appointment to change the receptacle in my car. I told Brian Dempsey I do not believe him. he said they followed "Ford's" maintenance flow chart. it proved the car's receptacle is bad. I strongly disagreed. Brian refused to show me how they tested my unit. HE REFUSED. When I got home. Later that day I checked my E-mail. I opened a message from Art Hill, " From:noreply@trvdo.com" Your video is now available for viewing. If you have any questions, please contact your service advisor Brian Dempsey by calling +12193372013. It showed my "a car" receptacle light "BLUE". That proves my car's charging receptacle is "AOK". Also note I found my Charging unit in my back seat still coiled up secured with MY electrical tape.
Nice! I was wondering how it would do in the snow with RWD. I'll try mine today with the all seasons.
@@MarcNeilson Whisper mode allows no wheel slip at all. In fact, the car aims to keep dead straight even in unbridled. The lesser grip with the all seasons will affect your turn in, especially if you enter a corner too hot. You'll have to back off the brakes to get the wheel rolling again to initiate the turn. She'll rotate around a tight corner pretty good, without throwing the tail out. Gotta say, if you turn off the safeties, she'll have you facing the wrong direction with a pirouette, that hopefully was intentional.
Do you have the lithium (LFP) or nickle-cadmium (NCM) battery in your Mach E? Apologize if I missed you saying it earlier.
@@Tim30-k6n This model is the LFP pack. Standard range model: 70kWh I should probably post it somewhere in all the videos.👍🏾
Nice video! Appreciate the real world EV experience! Like the Canadian content too!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

If more people factor in their actual daily use case, rather than focusing on the range of the battery, they would realize an EV works for them. That 186 mile range was the real world range of the Audi e-tron I had, in the US. Being in Malaysia now, I see a number of Chinese EVs using LFP batteries on their entry level vehicle, with range around 450km/279 miles and up to 580km/360 miles on their top level version. The crazy thing is, both come pretty much loaded and the only option is the battery size and color, such a big difference, no need to buy additional options.
@@waynerm002 You're on point. I posted another video that shows my typical edge case scenario, 136 km in one roundtrip during a snowstorm. The car still only used 56% of its capacity. Every other day is 50km or much less in a day. Phenomenal gas savings on city driving, and time savings from not going elsewhere to fill up.
Thk for the info I have a Mach e first winter and rwd in Montreal Canada .. I hope it’s no bad here Thk for your info
The charging infrastructure in Montreal is top tier compared to here in PEI. I was nervous switching to RWD after 10 years in Subaru Imprezas, the 2015 and 2017. Gotta say, I'm super impressed with the traction control system in the Mach-e for winter conditions when your driving safely.
We find setting a departure time while plugged in really helps when it's cold iut
@@Null04 plugging in helps, for sure. I am able to do so, but given that nearly half of the population may not have access to daily charging, I want to paint a bit of a picture about the feasibility of EV ownership as a renter. It's quite feasible to get by on 2 charges a week, and maybe 1 in the summer. We've had some bitter cold the last few days. Idling the car, and running heat definitely gobbled up range. One would need at least 3 charges to get through my weekly commute, and hopefully not more. If it was always 10 degrees below freezing, this would for sure hamper EV adoption more. Given how much better the car is on efficiency outside of winter, I'm still super happy, even though it's just as efficient to use our hybrid for winter instead, on some trips. Often the EV is still cheaper. That being said nothing beats the EV in terms of reducing dependency on oil and gas, it's power delivery, and the ability to charge at home or work is the biggest time saver of all. I haven't had to divert to a gas station in 7 months, which is an underated flex. Without consistent access to cheap charging, phantom battery drain from the cold, and reduced driving range are very valid reasons to wait for EVs to get better. The current EV drawbacks aren't for everyone, but I find that very few ppl that make the switch actually miss gas cars outside of special circumstances. Charging more in the cold suits my use case scenario, but it's nice to know what the car is capable of if I can't.
@lawpolo I haven't tried when unplugged, but perhaps still worth a try to set that departure time at least 40 minutes before you head out in the cold as it's supposed to precondition the batteries.. not sure how much power it uses as we are new to EV as well. We did a round trip 250 km today in about -8 Celsius and still had 25 percent battery. For charging at home we are using a splitter off of our dryer plug and run it out the window as it's right beside our driveway....
@@Null04 The other day I did 136km, highway driving, using 56% of the SR battery. I did plug in and precondition for that trip. Otherwise, my daily commutes are 15 to 20 mins each. 30 to 50km in a day is typical. I think the extra energy is to precondition in that case is a bit wasteful, so I just start the cabin heater with the app on the days it's not plugged in. The schedule on the app does precondition everything on the nights it's plugged in to charge. Right now I'm charging to 85%, only when the battery dips to 20%. Condo and apartment dwellers with a commute similar to mine can share an overnight charger, likely with assigned charging nights, given that will only need to charge every 3 to 10 days, depending on the season. Next, I'll set to battery down to 50% or 60% and charge daily, with battery preconditioning. Once I have both sets of numbers, I'll see if there is and added savings in the cold, by warning up the battery every day. th-cam.com/video/359IZs3fwdY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wk3FlLINWmwEQL4g
In my experience, pre-heating for longer trips is somewhat pointless, except for comfort, because the battery will warm up anyway while you're driving. I don't own a Mach-E though, I have a 2017 Model S.
@@FrostyAUT I'm still gaining experience with the longer trips, as I don't make many. I've only had to DC fast charge 3x in 6 months, all in the same trip. As much as I'm sure DC charging will heat the battery up way more than driving, I've observed the Mach-E to happily run near freezing without the battery's heater on at all for many of my short trips. Since the cold doesn't hurt the battery, and minimally affects performance, I'm with you. I don't overthink or sweat about battery preconditioning. I'm in it for the cabin comfort.
what snow /winter tires did you put on ?
@@DaveVideos5 Goodyear Ultra Grip® Performance+ No complaints with them so far.
Would be interesting to see energy consumption with primarily city use during such winters, even heavy winters Like miles / wh or whatever other variation the car shows...don't care about range, because that is a guesstimate of the computer based on driving habits But if you reset the trip meter before going into town and like driving your normal routine, with traffic and such at the end of the week, you will have an average consumption of xxxxxx miles / wh. That is important. Or if you go out during the heavy traffic of holiday season, that's even better to really see consumption during gridlock and heavy traffic, very slow moving. Thanks
@@ElGoogKO , your right, I do primarily city driving. I drive with the heat on, 23celcius, when I have the family, and average 30-33 kWh/100km. By myself I put the heat lower, 19 or 20 C, heated seats on, I get 22-25 kWh/100km When I don't need heat, only heated seats and heated wheel on, I get about 15 kWh per 100km. 10 to 20 km, per trip, 15 to 20 mins each.
