Thank you for this video. I am interviewing with PENN for the MD-PhD program soon and it is my dream school so this has been very helpful in solidifying my interest!! Fingers-crossed that I get to move to Philly!
So you didn’t actually have any patient interactions. Sure you shadowed. But no clinical. That’s interesting. Was that a challenge in your interviews?
I graduated from Havard School of Medicine years ago cause they gave me a full ride. For med school, I also got in at Johns Hopkins, Duke, Perelman (UPenn), Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, Northwestern, Virgina Commonwealth University, University of Pittsburgh, Thomas Jefferson, University of Michigan, Baylor college of medicine, New York University, University of Maryland, and Brown University.
What was your X factor
@commonomics I will give a brief summary of my stats and journey: My gpa was 5.0 weighted, MCAT score 526, and I was valedictorian of my graduation class. I completed over 6,000 hours of community service, which included hospitals, clinics, homeless shelters, orphanage, cleaning the environment, etc. I was president of student government, president of student ambassadors committee, and president of the pre-med club. I was also a peer mentor, part of the student curricular co council, involved in residential life&housing, as well as honors committee. I studied abroad three times, twice for medicine and the third time for theology. I did the Disney college program twice as a character performer ("friends with"Minne Mouse, and Donald Duck) and stunt performer(I played a chatacter I can't say 😉), and then did two internships at top hospitals. When I graduated, I taught all main biology and chemistry courses for 3 and a half years. I worked as a sound tech for an extra gig during the weekends and eventually got hired to work sound for Disney World's magic kingdom fireworks at night time. (I helped project the music and learned how to project the lights during the fireworks). I taught college courses during the day and worked sound and lights for the magic kingdom at night. I am fluent in 13 languages and have visited 27 countries. I am also a writer. I have 4 publications. During my undergrad years, I was also a CNA. [☝️that's not everything but a synopsis].
Hi! If you apply at the end of junior year, are senior year courses accepted for admissions requirement? (Ex. if one year of writing is required for HMS, can you do that senior year if you apply as a junior? Will that be accepted?)
Wonderful! It’s very great and vital for me(a Harvard Extension School student currently) if you release two videos about WHY you choose UPen instead of HMS and HOW to prepare from now(a college guy) for a most possibly successful admission to these medical schools! I subscribed your channel and wait for them! I will appreciate it much to see them as well!
As a medical student, I can't thank you enough for sharing your experiences. It's reassuring to know that even those who seem 'perfect on paper' face challenges. Your honesty is truly inspiring!
Wow, this video is exactly what I needed! Your tips on how you jumped from a 505 to a 520 are super inspiring. Feeling more confident about my MCAT prep now. Thanks for sharing your journey and strategies!
Typical Asian DR!!! Congrats DoC….You Asians are too smart please share some knowledge to us .
Hi Mike. Thank so much for your detailed rundown of the interview process! I just had a quick question about the admissions. I think you said in one of the comments that you are an engineering researcher. What engineering major were you? And how did you apply your major in your undergraduate years in a research lab? As an engineer aspiring MD-PhD myself, I would like to gain some helpful tips.
I watched your videos to prepare for my interviews and also apply to MD-PhD programs. Because of your guidance, I was able to succeed and will be starting my MD-PhD at the University of Pittsburgh. Thank you for all your help!
Did you have any publications at the time of applying ?
Can I email you
I have a question; if you know and answer me, I don't know how to appreciate you. And this is... can bachelor students from Canada apply to MD-PhD in university of USA? and are there limitations on them?
The majority of funding for MD PhD comes from the US government so it is very difficult for international students to get accepted, and for the ones that do accept international students, most require your undergraduate degree to be from a US institution.
But I believe Caltech 4.30 is perfect grade
I believe the top 40 have 4.0 GPA
You are truly the best!
I hope you can help society not age. immortality for all. also for yourself so you can help us live long enough to live forever. btw very inspiring.
THANK YOU! I am fighting towards getting into medical school and your accomplishments motivate me. I am an incoming “freshman” (actually a sophomore, did dual credit in high school) at a state college so it will be tough, but I will do it. Congratulations and good luck!
Congrats, and i don’t want to diminish your success at all. But I genuinely don’t think this kind of application is attainable for anybody who supports themself. Great job on the great GPA, but the amount of time you spent volunteering or researching is the same amount of time most students have to spend at work. Watching this makes it feel impossible for someone in a lower class to become a doctor.
If you want to go to the best schools, you need to be part of the best . A lot of his stats may be overkill, but I think that it’s just a testament to how passionate he is about medicine and how driven he is to become a doctor. If this doesn’t seem like you, that’s fine, but it was his choice to work that hard! ❤️🙌
Does UPenn accept international students for MD-PHD programs ??
Are you worried about the kensington situation? Like did it factor into your decision?
Hi Michael, I have been watching your videos for about a year now. I just wanted to know your full name. Also, I wanted to ask you some questions, can you send your insta id here?
would love to hear why you ended up choosing penn!
Wow! You are a stellar applicant that I think any program would be glad to have! It’s weird to me that you would be admitted into the Harvard program, but get rejected from Stanford without even a final interview, despite coming out of Caltech (a very challenging school in the first place) with top grades. I guess it’s just one of the quirks of grad school admissions.
Hey Michael, just curious, do you have any idea of what specialty you want to go?
what
Congrats on the jump! :)
"How to get into Harvard. Take the hardest subject available and get the highest grades possible". I'm obviously jealous. Incredible job.
Those physics courses man. You are brilliant.
Thank you so much for posting this. I can really with this video, other then the caltech student and 5 years of research part 😂
THANK YOU!
Wow, I was expecting to experience the tiresome life of an adcom reading endless personal statements, but they was extremely well written and engaging. No wonder you got in to pretty much everywhere
Focusing on only a few things was a surprising choice but effective
Hey Michael I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing your journey to med school and making all these amazing videos. I’ve been learning so much from your videos. Please keep posting and updating!!!
We want a follow up video!!
Thanks this really helps me. I'm wanting to apply for my MS in Genetic Counseling and all this really helps me to make some decisions.
Hello, if you get rejected by MD-PhD by certain medical school, is it possible that they could defer to the MD program instead and accept the applicant?
Hey! Do you have any tips for post interview communication? Is it worthwhile to send updates and letters of intent? Thanks!
UPenn is one of my dream schools. Wish me luck, waiting for that MSTP interview invite right now…
hi! can you please make a video on how to study bio? I'm very logic oriented and not really good at memorization, which is why i aced chem and phy but not bio
The majority of these courses are all pass/fail or not reported. At the UC system, they don't let you take all your classes the first two quarters as pass/fail. They start judging you the moment you step foot in class.
would love to see a day in a life for both of you!
Hi Michael, you seem like such a humble, kind, and hardworking guy! I appreciate your vulnerability and honesty in this video and for sharing the full range of your experiences. Your video is refreshing and inspiring. Can't wait to keep following you on your journey!
Hi! Just stumbled upon your channel and am enjoying your vids! :) I'm starting med school in a couple months. As a non-trad student (undergrad in mechanical engineering; worked in tech), I enjoyed learning about how you (w/ a physics background) adjusted to med school learning. Really interesting thoughts about being a spatial learner--would be really interested in hearing about that more! Best of luck!!!
Cool video
What’s your opinion on altius materials? Effective/not?
Amazing - great job
Did you have to take organic chemistry? Wondering what the prereq requirements are for mdphd programs; do you know where I can find these prereqs?
hey! for the prereqs, you'll have to look at the school's website that you are interested in and explore that to find out all the requirements. For example, you can search something like "harvard mdphd prerequisite requirements."
I asked a question on a previous video about your publications. Thank you for the honesty and transparency here. I am happy for your success dude you are a genuinely nice and helpful person.
Just curious, did you have any publications or an award like Goldwater? I am applying MD/PhD this cycle and I have very similar stats. MCAT 520+, GPA 3.9+ (congrats on 4.0!) in an academically rigorous program at a t10 school (Go Cats!), 3500+ hrs research, and decent clinical experiences/shadowing. I really want to do biomedical devices (particularly machine learning for deep brain stimulation etc.) I've been active on two research projects, both of which I hope to have published by the time I graduate (as second and third author). I know Goldwater's and other awards look really good and I wasn't sure if my lack of one would put me at a disadvantage against other great applicants like yourself. Congrats on all the success man I hope you fulfil your research dreams.
I would say that awards like the Goldwater Scholarship might help an applicant, but not having one does not matter whatsoever. From my own experience as both an applicant and now an interviewer, the most important thing is definitely just commitment/dedication/tangible interest in research and just a passion for what you do! No one is going to count your honors and awards to make sure you have "enough"
