    Thanks for the video. Just did mine today. The link and part number were good, but not long enough for my hull. There wasn't much threat to screw on to. I also had to do silicone both sides because the butyl tape wouldn't compress. Might redo it. Might just put it in the water and see what i think and tey again next year. We'll see...

    I think most boats with larger cockpits have too small of scuppers to drain the weight of the water out fast enough to prevent sinking if following seas or other wave swamping events occurred. Are there larger scuppers with internal flapper- type valves to prevent the sea from entering lower transoms allow the rapid drain?

    Does the water not "pool" in the stearn of the boat because of the angle facing forward?

      They sit far above the waterline and almost never back flow, and if they do it drains very quickly

    • @RoundABoutStudio
      @RoundABoutStudio ปีที่แล้ว

      I went to Harbor freight and bought cheap sanding pads (40,60,80 grit) but I bought a good Dewalt electric sander and it’s not a bad idea to get a good vacuum system to collect the paint directly from the sander. I used the Pettit system with their epoxy barrier coat and their paint, and I followed the application instructions to the letter.

    Another solution would be to buy a Bruce anchor.... that would fit INSIDE the bucket, shank down My anchor lived in the lazarette locker (Mac 26S) it was a Bruce in a SQUARE bucket (more stable than round and more space efficient)....I used to deploy/set the anchor from the stern (makes sense when you consider that's where you and the engine controls are) After engine shut off I'd walk the bucket up (outside the stays!) to the bow and secure the rode. Reverse process in the morning. One thing about a Bruce: no moving parts to pinch/injure your hands!!! I "boat camped" on a Davidson 18 (swingkeel) for ten years....then cruised with a Mac 26 for 13 years....(both boats on both coasts of Vancouver Island.) There is no free lunch and while you gain some stuff with length you always lose something as well!! I always thought that your boat would be about the perfect compromise

  • @francoislepine4698
    @francoislepine4698 ปีที่แล้ว

    "marine grade" silicone???? What? Did they put a picture of a sailboat on the tube??? LOL..... Next time use SIKAFLEX....cost more, way better....it keeps expanding for a while after application and NEVER goes hard/brittle...doesn't attract dirt/goes black like silicone does. Used it on boats and RVs....won't anything else now

    • @amaturemusicians
      @amaturemusicians 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The boat stands are brownell's. They don't come cheap. New ones are quite spendy and used ones get snatched up fairly quickly. I was constantly scanning Craigslist, OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace, yard sales etc. I got lucky this week and found four used stands in the size needed for $500. A steal of a deal.

    Another tip I found out that in a following sea I would get water in the cockpit from my scuppers, so I installed the rubber flaps from Amazon that lets water out but not in. By the way that is a very nice boat, I have hull 8588. What's your hull number?

    • @RoundABoutStudio

  • @Land_an_sea
    @Land_an_sea ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey man I did the exact same project on my Catalina 22. A trick for the butle tape for you: Once you put the beetle tape around the threads against the cockpit hole or on the washer however you want to do it, put just a little bit of petroleum jelly on the butyl tape between the tape and the nut and the nut will spend on perfect the beetle tape will stay in place.

    I really like the jack method. Takes only a little more time up front and saves a bunch of dinking around. I think it's important to add the extra uprights once the trailer is out. Great video, Mathew. If I hadn't already solved the problem for me, I probably would have done it this way. I will be remaking my lifting videos this spring. Longer-stronger beam, and a wedge on the beam. I especially like the measuring too you created and the oversize wheels on the cart were exactly a great solution to the unpaved site. Great job!

    After watching a video like yours, I did the same project on my Catalina 22 8+ years ago. Last summer, I decided to just duck tape over the drain holes for the winter because I was sick and tired of cleaning the cockpit drain tubes which as you know is never easy. Now I just let the boat cockpit fill with water over the winter and know that the transom drains are there. I drained out the water this spring in the cockpit -cleaned up the mess- and took off the tape. Why didn't I think of this before?

    Really excellent filmmaking. I have a Laguna Windrose. It is a poor man's catalina. My keel pivot bolts were glassed over. Probably some previous owner couldn't get it to stop leaking. So I can't inspect the bolt and that leaves me worried, because is does hang slightly sideways. If I cut into the glass, who knows what I would find (Can't get parts for this boat)

    • @RoundABoutStudio

      I did not silicone the threads, I just siliconed the cockpit side flange. The most important thing is sealing the plywood of the transom with epoxy or something. Of that gets wet over time it would rot the wood. Keep in mind the scuppers are out of the water 99.99% of the time.
