How to cut solar cells
Some time ago I needed a method of cutting solar cells in order to make from a larger solar cell (6x6inch, 0.55Volt, 8Amp) a number of smaller solar cells to be used for a small solar panel for batteries charging and other applications. Here is how I have succeeded to do that.

    Muy buen método, cortarlo de esta manera. Pero hay ser un experto cortando vidrio, ya que el grosor del vidrio de lamina solar es 0,2 mm. Es extremadamente quebradiza y frágil. Me gusta esa idea, voy a intentarlo hacer.

    I wish there was a .5v boost circuit that could use the amps of the 6x6" cell and convert to 6v.

    A small battery charger can be made using those smaller cells.

    Looks Like This Process Works Well For Polycrystalline Cells Not For The Monocrystalline Cells I Tried Them On. For Monocrystalline You Have To Cut Along The “Grain” Of The Lattice But, At Least For Me, That Did Not Line Up With The Solder Lines. I’m Going To Try The Dremel Method.

      @@vNewH0USE I Got It To Work. I Used The Diamond Rotor They Recommend On Other Videos. It Works Great. Very Important To Build A Good Jig So You Can Cut Strait. I Did Get Jagged Edges On Most Cuts But The Cells Worked As Normal

    How does this affect the output of the cell? Does each piece still produce .5 V?

    • @tudurache

      Yes, only the current (and power) will be smaller, proportional with the surface of the cell.

    Hello! thanks for the video! I wonder: many people have made (in youtube video and forums) panel of 36 pieces solar cells, if count 36 units multiplied by 0 5 Volt get 18 volts, I just received 40pcs poly solar cells- 70watt from USA. I want to connect for charge car battery is 45 amps or 100amp,also i have Controller 20amp like this: www.ebay.com/itm/20A-12V-24V-Solar-Panel-Charge-Controller-Battery-Regulator-Safe-Protection-YK/221892107451?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D36862%26meid%3D135ca3533d9446debac1b6aa7e92a5d2%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D261996636715 Is it possible to make the solar panel consist of 40pieces=20 Volt? 20volt this is bad for controller or car battery? or impossible make 20volt and important a make of 36pieces=18volt?????????? i hope you answer soon... best regards George!

    • @tudurache
      @tudurache 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are making a confusion between 20Amps of the charge controller and the 20Volts of the solar panel. Your controller have 20 Amps maximum charging current, so any 36 cells panel should be ok. A soler cell produces an open voltage (no load) of about 0.55V at a current of max 8A (depending of the cell type). When connected to a load, the voltage drops, but maximum efficiency is obtained when the voltage per cell is about 0.4V If we do the math 36*0.4=14.4 and that is very close to the voltage of a charged 12V car battery. So, 36 cells is the minimum number of cells in order to fully charge a car battery. Why always are used 36 cells? My guess is because this way you don'd waste any cell, but also because 36 cells are easier to arrange in a panel.
