Hello, I'm currently 21 and want to pick up a guitar to be able to play rock songs. What should I expect during my first couple of years of learning it? What kind of practice routine should I be following for getting used to the guitar along with learning the songs? I'm really serious about it now as I never got the chance to learn music in my childhood (due to my parents being very strict about my studies). Also does it get easier to remember the fretboard and the songs after a while?

I think it might be helpful for you to anchor your hand a bit more to the guitar it may help with the cleanness of your playing. That being said I think Michael angelo batio has a similar technique to yours in that he is using his fingers rested on the guitar to anchor. What i do is I anchor a bit with the fingers but when I'm playing pretty much the fleshy parts of your fingers are used to mute every string that is higher than the one you are playing and then the bit of my hand I use to karate chop is used to mute every string lower than the one I am playing

Good stuff! I’ve been talking to a guitar playing buddy of mine for a few weeks about guitars and the variety of sounds they can make. Things in and around my life seem pretty stressful and needed a creative thing to focus on. I felt a little sic last Monday (a week ago) and got positive on a Covid test so 10 days off work. I immediately got a guitar and amp and started strumming and plucking. Haven’t seriously tried anything other than noodling, but I’m committed to doing something with it every day. And not just binge watching guitar related TH-cam 🤣. New instrument: Davie504 would recommend BASS! Something else I want to try.
