A Quick Summary of the Channel:
First off, if you made it this far into the description, awesome; fist bump for that one, appreciate it. I’ll start with what a WaterHopper is in my mind and you may actually find that you are one as well. A WaterHopper is anyone who always has fishing on their mind and/or is always ready to go at the drop of a hat. Whether that be they have the gear with them in the trunk, (for me it's the gear and the kayak); or they just are always willing to join in the fun. I hope you guys enjoy this compilation that is my successes, failures, and triumphs; sometimes all rolled into one video. I’ll do my best to keep the content coming and improving every week. Let me know in the comments if you think you could be considered a WaterHopper yourself. Have a good one, thanks for the view, and Keep Waterhoppin’.
I want to add that all this applies to your version of love for the outdoors as well. (hiking, hunting, biking, etc.)

    I had an experience with a bedded doe once years ago when I was young and limber and in shape. I was just walking around looking for a place to hunt (this was before such things as portable stands) and saw a near 45 degree leaning tree that looked easy to crawl up to some branches to be able to sit somewhat comfortably for a couple hours. On the crawl up I just put my bow over my shoulder and started climbing (young and dumb as no one knew where I was). Got up there got situated and sat for a couple hours. Figured I'd get down a bit early as I had quite a walk and did not want to be walking in the dark out of unfamiliar surroundings. This time I took my bow rope out of my pocket and was starting to let my bow down when a bedded deer came into focus straight below me. On double checking I was not going insane I pulled my bow back up got an arrow nocked and drew back and took what in my young hunting career I thought was an easy straight down shot, not easy at all by the way. Clean missed and then realized that deer was lying there the whole time I climbed up that tree above it and stayed there knowing I was there for that couple hours. Never occurred to me to look straight down for a deer when I was up there and I know it did not walk in on me while I was up there as the forest floor was littered with dry fall leaves. Moral of the story is I always pick apart every square foot of ground around me after I get up in the tree as you never know what is there. Nice stalk, not sure I would have the patience to pull that off. I was expecting some guy to come around the corner in the trail and scare the deer off after all that time and effort. Was that the exact same spot that buck was walking last year, looks the same. If so maybe that buck was bedded in that area as well but just saw you before you saw it and was trying to sneak out. .

      Man thats a crazy story on your end with the straight down shot. Never experienced that! As for the doe. I saw her feeding on acorns first. She then bedded down shortly after. It was the middle of the day on the last day so I said let's go for it. Almost pulled it off.

      @@TheWaterHopper Yep, just keep at it if given the chance. I'm still debating on if I should buy a license for the late season in January. I'd like to but I'd have to find someone familiar to her to come and visit with her and my dad while I'm gone as she is at the point in her dementia where some times she does not recognize the house and keeps saying she wants to leave and go home (I'm guessing childhood home). So can not trust her to be with my dad alone as his mind is starting to go as well, plus he is always dozing off so be nothing for her to wander off into the freezing weather if one of those episodes occur.

      Put the mattress on the high side. Opposite of the opening. If you check out my later videos I now have an ARE MX Series cap on it. Built the camper while waiting for the cap to be delivered. Under the mattress I like to put an air pad. Helps hold the heat and gives extra cushion. Still works 4 years later

    Going to have to start calling that tree darlin' #2. 😀 I find it very interesting that all those deer are moving in broad daylight across such big open areas on public land. I would have never even considered that tree as an option for hunting out of, just way too open to my mindset but it works and works well. I'm thinking with such a huge pack of coyotes as it sounds is around there the deer feel much safer being out in the open like that.

    • @TheWaterHopper
      @TheWaterHopper 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hahaha I know right?? I think the reason this tree works is a few things. #1 it is far from the road. And the way the hill comes down there gives them cover from sight to any other hunters in the area. #2 this spot is right off major bedding with almost impenetrable cover. Just to my left. The deer feel safe in the low spot there. #3 it is a main travel corridor between three different fingers coming off private land that to my knowledge is managed. #4 the tree has great back cover with the pine there. #5 and you said it also. The tree is ugly. And to my knowledge had never been hunted before. It is so in the open but at the same time concealed in a way. I can sneak in there with good wind quietly. And get in the tree quick as well. It has served me well. But you need the right wind and conditions. I like it on cold fronts. The coyotes are rampant out there. And surely are part of the reason why i didn't get a shot on that first buck. They left immediately after back into their security cover.

    • @Diffidentone
      @Diffidentone 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheWaterHopper Yea just a couple coyotes will annoy the heck out of the deer, I've seen 2 coyotes chasing and nipping at the hamstrings of an adult doe, with the does fawns running behind them. Also seen it on my old regular cams before I switched over to cellular cams and pics. I used to run video on my old chip cams. I got one video years ago of what I call the buck parade, think it was 7 or 8 bucks walking single file past the cam all on one 30 second video. Still have that video someplace.

      Don't know if it is bad news for you but this was a custom build. No plans I can send your way. My bed is also 6'1" I have a video earlier on my channel detailing the whole build process if you want to check it out. I camp in it a few times a year. But honestly it has become more of a storage convenience. I fish a lot and hunt a lot. And having the bed setup the way I do now is perfect for me. I also use it to cook out of multiple times a year.

    If you ever think a deer will die eventually after not being able to recover it, go back a few days or a week later and look in the sky and trees for vultures. They will lead you right to it.

    • @TheWaterHopper
      @TheWaterHopper หลายเดือนก่อน

      Funny you should say that. It's not on my channel. But a buddy of mine was in the area about two weeks later. I live too far to frequent the area. Almost 200 miles away. But he was there and walked a field edge where I had lost blood. Sure enough. Smack dab in the middle of the field was that buck. He got a salvage tag for me. Took the head. And now I at least have that. Just wish I could have given full respect to animal. But at least there is closure. For the record. It was a main frame 8 with a split brow. So a 9. And measured 116" Just haven't posted that he was found on the channel yet. This is great advice tho.

  • @Diffidentone
    @Diffidentone หลายเดือนก่อน

    10:45 that looked to be a community licking branch used by all the deer in the area. Those usually have the larger area of ground torn up. I've seen a group of 5 does and fawns use one at the same time jockeying for position pushing each other out of the way.

      Yea I can definitely see that. I found that the main reason I prefer the hang on is the fact that I can setup my cameras and bow and everything. Then climb back down to get in my warm clothes. Or if I hang it in the morning I can come back to it ready to go for the afternoon. I also really like that I can climb any tree. Most of the areas I have started hunting lately don't have straight chute trees. Only a hang on works in there. I'll say this though. Nothing beats the comfort of a climber without a doubt. Also a larger standing platform works great.

      Same here. I switched to a summit viper after trying tons of different saddle hunting and hang on setups. It's just so much quicker and easier to get 25+ feet in my climber. Being able to adjust seat height and position on the tree on the fly is nice as well.

    Keep your head up....as hunters, most of us have been through it, or, are gonna go through it. We try to correct our errors, hope the deer makes it, and keep pushing. Great video. It shows that it doesn't always end in our favor.

    Did you have any issues with heat? I’m worried my rods would get cooked in there, wouldn’t want the grips to melt off

    • @TheWaterHopper
      @TheWaterHopper 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No issues with heat. But. The rods sliding around was an issue. Scratching the bait casters. So now i have a t shirt stuffed in the far end. And I put a rag in the front when I put the rods in. So they can't slide back and fourth. Been great since then.

    • @TheWaterHopper
      @TheWaterHopper 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I love the MX. The headroom is what won me over. In the beginning I did have leaking at the cab side left side. Where the cap meets the bed. Never approached the installer. Simply added some gray colored marine sealant where it was coming in and I've been dry since.

    My husband shot a nice buck mid October bow hunting. We tracked it for 2 days with a dog and thought the deer was long gone. 2 weeks later one of the landowners sent trail cam video of the buck. He was limping bad. Opening day gun season the neighbors best friend shot him at 7:30 am. only 150 yds from where my husband shot him. The friend said there wasn't much meat on him and the loins were small. He didn't think it would have survived the winter.
