Estarli e28.9: First Ride Review
Cycling Electric's Editor, Mark Sutton, puts Estarli's new semi-urban commuter bike through its paces in Ashridge.
The new semi-urban e-bike from the Hertfordshire brand thrives on gravel paths just as it does on the tarmac.
In this closer look, Mark takes us through the key components of the bike and gives us his initial rider impressions.
You can test ride this bike - along with the rest of the Estarli range - at the Cycling Electric Demo day in Bath on Sept 29th.

I'm so jealous of anyone who lives in Keswick....would be amazing to just go down to Derwent water whenever you wanted. I'm very tempted by this bike, I just wish it was available in better colours. Not really a fan of the green, grey or UFO.

The hire charges from Blike are pretty ridiculous. For the Estarli e20.8 you pay £100 to join, then you pay £99 a month and you can own the bike for good after THIRTY SIX monthly payments - total price £3664.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Loving the basket, and the lovely pink! I’m thinking of converting to an e-bike, got a nice ladies hybrid bike - it’s not electric. But this week I have had too many dramas getting too and from work in the London traffic! Might have to get back on a nice bike, an e-bike would suit my needs much better now.😊

Just discovered Estarli and I have to say I'm very impressed from what I have learnt so far. SO glad to see a British manufacturer producing high quality products - this is coming from a long term Brompton owner. Doing my research and will set about organising a test drive - have my eye on your eCargo bike in the cargo format - thank you for making this with a Gates Belt Drive!!!! - something I had asked Brompton to do for ages. Have contacted your CS with some battery related questions. Best of luck with the future and wish you continued success in the e-bike sphere :-)

Really interested in one of these after selling my Tern GSD during covid - is there anything that talks about the changes you can see in the version in this video and the majority of reviews on the channel and what is now being sold? Specifically, the battery location has moved and the mid drive motor has changed. Reviews mention a bafang motor and so many nM's but now you have a different motor producing 110nm's - the Ananda M100 Reading some of the reviews, its a bit weird to me to be looking at and reading about one bike and potentially buying a different specification bike. The last promo on your channel 13 days ago has a different battery location so presume its a previous specification?

Ebikes are great physio if you are recovering from illness or injury. Some disabled people use them as mobility devices too. Bikes do have an initial upfront cost but cars cost more. We have schemes like Bike to work and other local schemes for those that don't fit Bike to work so there's help budgeting for a bike. I found that the cost of a budget ebike was less than my biannual public transport budget. My choice was pay for public transport or get a bike. I prefer a bike, ebike or not. It's my most efficient convenient transport.

Nice video. We’ve had our Estarli for around 6 weeks now and love it. As a none-driving mum of 2 young children it has really changed my life. We had a rusty bakfiets type for a while but it was slow, cumbersome, and impossible to take up hills. I really appreciate the power assist and gearing, and I’ve yet to break a sweat riding it uphill. Much like this lady said, the ability to load it up is so useful that I can see us using it long after our children have outgrown it.

Reasons to get not an e-bike in 2024. Most accidents with e-bikes involves elderly people. So old chaps, don't buy. Losing weight is easier with a push bike. Losing weight is also easier by using the stairs instead of the elevator. To Mind your diet is also helpfull. For short, I am 79 years old, 1.80 metres, 72 KG, do walking at least one hour daily. Use the push bike in town and my 110 cc Honda Vision for outside and I love the stairs to the 2nd floor.

We are a little hit and miss but having just helped and elderly chap into an ambulance after fall on the hill outside our house its a big reminder. Massive amount of bloody, heavy concussion and out cold for a few minutes. Mostly could have been averted by a helment. I really do get the helmet comments.... Must try hard.

What a great explanation of how the Estarli fits in with the campervan holidays. I wonder what kind of range is possible on mixed surface like canal towpaths and cycle track? The dog basket on the back made me smile - but what is the dog 's name? It was really useful to know how the bike fitted a petite rider as I'm 5'2" and being able to comfortably put my feet down and feel in control is really important. The Estarli Play is top of my list and with a range extender I would happily use it for touring about 60 km max per day. Thanks again for a super video.

Panniers, rain tent, side deck, tow along hitch? Nothing in video and nothing in pics on website. That's one of the selling points for Tern - the huge range of accessories. IMO it's a bit much to slag off Tern as if it's overpriced when this is a copy of the GSD, with some cheaper components. Equally, Gates CDX with Enviolo at £3k is a great proposition. If accessories come close then I'd seriously consider this (we'll soon need to swap box bike for long tail as kids getting big and hitting the rain canopy). Equivalent of storm box and clubhouse tent at a minimum is required to make this a competitor for happy passengers in all seasons. In any case...great to see a brand expanding while others fall. Competition always good for us consumers....(let's face it, the Trek and Cannondale attempts are terrible value for money).

I think the guys are estarli are working on it for the full launch of the bike they have some the more family orientated bits in test . For me this works as with the minimal seats. Happy to admit it's a extra tool for getting kids around but we have two cars so in really foul weather we can drive. The Tern is just beyond my budget and my cycle to work budget, overpriced maybe a little harsh but it's definitely premium. The nuvinci hub and mid drive were my key requirements. The bafang mid drive for me is actually more appealing than other more locked down systems. I can buy spares and repair myself if required and add batteries as required. Lot of emtbs out there with water ingress and big repair bills.

I'm currently looking at getting a first all round workhorse e-bike. Probably a Cube Kathmandu which is currently top of my potentials list because I'm 2 metres tall and over 120kg so they have a 62cm frame and I can't find anything bigger. Plus 12 manual gears which should allow me to pedal fully without assist for as much as possible. I have a car (relatively cheap second hand) which I couldn't live without because I live in a rural area. In pure costs, it would take a long time to save the cost of it back in just fuel alone because its not practical (or safe) to ride to work. But I hope to be able to do more and go further than I already do with my current manual workhorse. And after health issues over the last two years, I'm not going to worry about feeling guilty about not trying to push myself physically beyond my safe limits. Although I must have a look at the Estarli website to see what's there now that my curiosity has been piqued.

@@corvuslupus3859 Thanks, I appreciate your recommendation. I did order the Kathmandu after I posted that comment but because I had to wait until Cube manufactured more extra large sized frames I'm still waiting on delivery. Probably in early July. The bike shop persuaded me to go for the cheaper 10 speed Kathmandu One instead because they say the drive train is more durable and longer lasting especially with a rider over 120 kg and with lots of hills in my area. And I will be carrying a lot of luggage and pulling trailers regularly as I am currently doing using my ordinary hybrid bicycle. And as well as less often, it's also much cheaper to replace than the 11 or 12 speed versions. Usually retailers want to sell you the more expensive version so I hope this advice was genuine? I'm glad you have had such a good experience with your slx. I hope you will enjoy it reliably for many more years. And I'm in Ireland.
