Can we still find beauty during horrible times? Does everything really happen for a reason?
My name is Kate and I’m a historian at Duke Divinity School. My book, Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel (Oxford University Press, 2013), received widespread media attention as the first history of the movement based on divine promises of health, wealth, and happiness.
My memoir, Everything Happens for a Reason (and other lies I’ve loved) (Random House, 2018), tells the story of my struggle to understand the personal and intellectual dimensions of the American belief that all tragedies are tests of character.

Christie Watson: The Absurdity (and Joy) of Midlife
Nurse and writer Christie Watson found herself in a grocery store fish-finger freezer and realized something was very, very wrong. Why was she so desperate for more? (And also, why was she so extremely overheated? Oh wait…hormones?) In this hilarious and hopeful conversation, Christie speaks with Kate about the importance of prioritizing joy in the face of our emotionally-expensive professions and roles, as well as joy’s importance as we get older (and how lucky we are to age in the first place).

In this conversation, Kate and Christie discuss:
- The intricate aspects of aging for women
- The significance of nurturing strong female friendships
- Making room for the absurd in our life

Everything Happens with Richard Hays
มุมมอง 16221 วันที่ผ่านมา
What does it mean to hope in a world of such uncertainty? When my guest today sat down with me, we were both trying to figure out our goodbyes. Famous New Testament scholar and my very good friend Richard Hays had been given another pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Which, as you know, is one of the deadliest cancers. And it was for the *second* time. We were both praying for the best as he grappled...

Thank your this episode which resembled to so many feelings and thoughts I'm having. Resurrection, mercy and hope - what wonderful words they are! And Richard being such a kind and lovely person, full of wisdom and grace himself. I'm so looking forward to receive my copy of his new book. God bless you.
Shit happens for no reason
Nope
❤ Thank you....wise words ❤️
LOVED THIS!!!
Thanks.! Yes, that an “ hour at a time”, & “ just ‘do ‘ next best Thing, & & I can always go to a Meeting (12 Step,etc)…..
Everything is NOT possible ..it's that simple. Thank you Kate for keeping it real.
I actually really needed this today, thank you xx
Thank you 🙏
How about.. everything is possible with God ❤
I suppose this guest feels we should all have selective amnesia regarding all the "thoroughly tested" drugs that came on the market which were later recalled for being harmful to our health. Just line up for the jab and take our chances, I guess. Just to be clear, I'm not an anti-vaxer. I just make sure the vaccines I do get have been around the block a time or two. Check out Dr John Campbell. He's been following how this whole thing is playing out.
the political climate is disgraceful because of the Republicans. this is not hyperbole, this is factual when you consider the lies and misinformation that's been circulating since 2008. Christians will need to ultimately reconcile this as they choose whom to support politically.
Love you both and thank you for bringing hope and joy to this very lovely chaotic world. #governerd4life
Thank you both for sharing your stories and how little things impact and grow greater outcomes!
I loved this so much!! for so many different reasons. I don't know Sharon, but she sounds amazing!!
Normalizing all emotions is an essential part of healing. Thank you.
Oohhh... clever girl 👍👍.
This is so important. When my wife passed away 8 years ago, I really struggled with concepts like "blessed", "deserve", and "earn". Your book helped me so much with that process. Thank you. Your approach to grief, and life as a whole, is refreshing and helpful. I am so grateful for you and the work you have been doing. Thank you.
I grew up watching Alan Alda and he convinced me Atari 8 bit computers were the best. Love the guy!
Such a beautiful conversation. So encouraging! Thank you!
"What is possible today?" Love it! Thank you 🙏🏽
Thank you for making this video… I am a 61 year old woman who has always felt like I don’t measure up in one way or another… always comparing myself to others to see where I fell short… I have had so many mixed messages from my mother my whole life and add to that scenario; my grown kids who have grown up with social media and who constantly remind me to be positive, look on the bright side, anything is possible if you just try and so on and so forth… feeling like the inevitable loser is a hard road to travel… when you feel as though you have done nothing of value with your life.. like you have wasted your life in procrastination, etc. My story is long but I was a single mother of 3 children who are now grown, married with children of their own… my son is not married yet but has a degree in welding and has dreams for his future.. I consider that to be a success..that I spent half of my life achieving this.. raising children alone who become productive adults… that should count for something… I didn’t plan for a future because I was too busy pouring myself into my children so they could be independent and have productive lives… the anything is possible mentality somehow sets us all up for feeling like a failure somehow
Me too at 62 what’s left now
Everything is a possibility and nothing is a certainty...
Thank you ❤️🩹
I enjoyed this conversation.
I got wistful vibes today. Thanks for making space for them.
Nobody cares.
Love this!
Where did you come from?! I needed this today! Serendipity! Thank you!
I love you Kate Bowler!
As I struggle with the news of metastic liver cancer your words “lift me up.”
🙏
So refreshing! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Trusting the process & walking in faith. Amen
Yes yes, permission received ❤❤
Oh Kate, thank you. This is the one day I needed to hear that.
I’d like to sit at your table in the great hereafter. Save me a seat? We’ll sup on truth and beauty, wash it down with the redeeming blood of Christ, and wrap up with a desert tray of miraculous scientific delights. Can we do that? 💕
Thank you for this! I suffered in chronic pain for years…I always prayed liquid prayers, but never connected. Finally have arrived and was met by my Holy Spirit. Hallelujah!
Wonderful! Thank you. I loved "We get the benefit of little bits of truth," something like that.
Great advice, if you don't know what to say just let them know you are there for them and want to listen.
Kate I am a rectal cancer survivor. Have been dealing with depression since my diagnosis 18 yrs ago. But I am an 18 yr survivor and my depression is finally getting better as of this year. My husband and I divorced because of my depression and I became my Dad's caregiver for 12 years. It has been quite a journey but with reading your books lately I can say I am becoming myself again...finally.
Its the same segment my dad read at my wedding, Becoming real.. I still cry when I hear it.
How wonderful! There wasn't a word either of you said that wasn't refreshingly truthful. It's quite sad that truth is so rare now.
Two of my favorite people!
Thank you
Ty for everything you do ❤
I love David Brooks, I try to introduce him to friends when I get the chance. I met him on the PBS News Hour and he's great. I didn't always agree with him but what love to talk with someday. I would love to be the guy sitting next to him on the airplane and would engage before the last hour 😂😉

So very rich. Thanks Dr. Hays and Dr. Bowler. 🙏🏽
