Christie Watson: The Absurdity (and Joy) of Midlife
Nurse and writer Christie Watson found herself in a grocery store fish-finger freezer and realized something was very, very wrong. Why was she so desperate for more? (And also, why was she so extremely overheated? Oh wait…hormones?) In this hilarious and hopeful conversation, Christie speaks with Kate about the importance of prioritizing joy in the face of our emotionally-expensive professions and roles, as well as joy’s importance as we get older (and how lucky we are to age in the first place).
Listen here: katebowler.com/podcasts/
In this conversation, Kate and Christie discuss:
- The intricate aspects of aging for women
- The significance of nurturing strong female friendships
- Making room for the absurd in our life

What does it mean to hope in a world of such uncertainty? When my guest today sat down with me, we were both trying to figure out our goodbyes. Famous New Testament scholar and my very good friend Richard Hays had been given another pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Which, as you know, is one of the deadliest cancers. And it was for the *second* time. We were both praying for the best as he grappled...

I suppose this guest feels we should all have selective amnesia regarding all the "thoroughly tested" drugs that came on the market which were later recalled for being harmful to our health. Just line up for the jab and take our chances, I guess. Just to be clear, I'm not an anti-vaxer. I just make sure the vaccines I do get have been around the block a time or two. Check out Dr John Campbell. He's been following how this whole thing is playing out.

the political climate is disgraceful because of the Republicans. this is not hyperbole, this is factual when you consider the lies and misinformation that's been circulating since 2008. Christians will need to ultimately reconcile this as they choose whom to support politically.

This is so important. When my wife passed away 8 years ago, I really struggled with concepts like "blessed", "deserve", and "earn". Your book helped me so much with that process. Thank you. Your approach to grief, and life as a whole, is refreshing and helpful. I am so grateful for you and the work you have been doing. Thank you.

Thank you for making this video… I am a 61 year old woman who has always felt like I don’t measure up in one way or another… always comparing myself to others to see where I fell short… I have had so many mixed messages from my mother my whole life and add to that scenario; my grown kids who have grown up with social media and who constantly remind me to be positive, look on the bright side, anything is possible if you just try and so on and so forth… feeling like the inevitable loser is a hard road to travel… when you feel as though you have done nothing of value with your life.. like you have wasted your life in procrastination, etc. My story is long but I was a single mother of 3 children who are now grown, married with children of their own… my son is not married yet but has a degree in welding and has dreams for his future.. I consider that to be a success..that I spent half of my life achieving this.. raising children alone who become productive adults… that should count for something… I didn’t plan for a future because I was too busy pouring myself into my children so they could be independent and have productive lives… the anything is possible mentality somehow sets us all up for feeling like a failure somehow

Kate I am a rectal cancer survivor. Have been dealing with depression since my diagnosis 18 yrs ago. But I am an 18 yr survivor and my depression is finally getting better as of this year. My husband and I divorced because of my depression and I became my Dad's caregiver for 12 years. It has been quite a journey but with reading your books lately I can say I am becoming myself again...finally.
