I talk about games and lack folds in my cerebellum.
The Oddworld Games: Story Explained
Oddworld is a video game series and fictional universe, created by developers Oddworld Inhabitants under the direction of Lorne Lanning.
Throughout games set in the Oddworld universe, the player's character goes on a quest to defend Oddworld's ecosystem from endangerment by industrial corporations.
There's heavy themes teased out in quite a humorous albeit dark way. The Original Quintology gave way for two spin off games and this video will be Covering what happens in Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath.
A lot of the music in the video was music from the respective games that I obviously have no ownership of. Without looking at every track all the stuff from Munch's or Stranger was composed by Michael Bross.

your lefty overinterpretation of the series is ridiculous, grow up kid
Hey apologies if you took it that way, the highlight I was aiming for is the exploitation of a native people and the environment being the big bad the game keeps reiterating. Money isn’t an issue but the glukkons conduct is, I don’t think I was especially leftist in this but the games themselves do have you freeing workers, stopping slavery, demolishing an economy, siding with natives etc so apologies if lingered too much on anything the game put out as I was just retelling the story as it happened, I hope you still got some enjoyment from the vid
Great gameplay and visuals from the Oddworld series, but it's disappointing to see the channel pushing leftist and anti-capitalist narratives onto the story. Oddworld is a creative and fun series, and while its themes might spark discussion, the radical interpretations feel like an unnecessary overlay.
Hey apologies if you took them that way, I wasn’t trying to imply anything anti capitalistic at all, the highlight I was aiming for is the exploitation of a native people and the environment being the big bad the game keeps reiterating. Money isn’t an issue but the glukkons conduct is, I don’t think I was especially leftist in this but the games themselves do have you freeing worker, stopping slavery, demolishing an economy etc so apologies if lingered too much on anything the game put out as I was just retelling the story as it happened, I hope you still enjoyed the video and I’ll keep an eye on it for my next ones
@@SmoothBrainGaming Hey, thanks for responding! I appreciate the clarification. I tend to value personal freedom and respect for property, so I can be a bit cautious when topics like exploitation or economic collapse come up-they can sometimes feel tied to ideologies I don’t fully agree with. That said, I see now that you weren’t trying to push any specific agenda, and I appreciate that. The video was really well-made, and I enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to your next one!
Thank you! Glad we could square it up! And I’m glad you enjoyed the video! I want to keep as politically unbiast as possible on the channel I think there’s a place to talk about the politics of different games and the themes they bring up but it’s just not fun for anyone to watch if it seems I’m pandering right or left unfairly and pushing an agenda through the games someone else made. I hope to cover a variety of games that naturally lean in both directions of the spectrum so thanks for bringing it up!
Prepare to make it big my dude, you hit the algorithm.
I was on 90 subs on Friday, I’m hoping it keeps up, thanks for watching!
@@SmoothBrainGaming Thanks for making a great video! I'm 32 and Abes Odyssey was the only game that would run on the family PC. I look forward to more videos. This was was in on my front page so it will be for others too!
Thank you!
I listen to videos like this while I’m sorting library books. Thanks for helping to break up the monotony. ❤
Thanks for keeping the Library sorted! I hope you enjoyed!
Nothing scratched the itch of Dungeon Keep after Bullfrog died. I was so extatic when I played the demo of this, it was the first game I ever bought in Early Access. Took FOREVER to come out, and it definitely wasn't ready, but they updated and added to it for years and polished it to a mirror shine, and I couldn't be happier with the end product. Plus, getting Richard Ridings back from narrating Dungeon Keep (and Peppa Pig), was a master stroke.
My only complaint was I wished there was more of it, I had a lot of fun and you’re right the narration is top notch!
@SmoothBrainGaming Absolutely agree. I completed everything, including all the DLC, and everything worth playing in the Steam Workshop. Occasionally, I boot it up to play a skirmish or something, but I am pretty much done with it. I'd like a sequel, or for another developer to pick up the gauntlet.
Strangers wrath the best title from odd world series.
For sure!
I've been waiting years for someone to do a true long form Oddworld lore video, and here it is!
You're welcome hope you enjoy!
Congrats on first video to crack 10k. Hope there's more like this to come instead of the reviews
Thank you! I tended to focus on the stories anyway in those older videos, but after playing around a bit I'll be doing more like this; should be Faith out next and then the Sly Cooper Series schedule permitting
Will you do a video on the new game?
I didn't realise until the comments that SoulStorm was a new story, at some point in the future I plan to but the next month's already planned out for now
@@SmoothBrainGaming Thank you for all the content. Cant wait to see SoulStorm in the future too. Exciting times ahead. :)
Thank you for watching!
I recently played the first two games after only ever having a go on a demo disc way back when. I love them and hate them.
I felt exactly the same, I'd played Oddysee before but probably didn't get past the first few screens as a kid, had never touched the rest besides Stranger's Wrath and my god are the first two oppressively hard. A lot of old games were don't get me wrong but I can see why a lot of people never got to the end, and the ones who did have a love for the game like an old friend or rival.
Gem.
Thank you!
I genuinely cannot explain why this channel has such low views. This is some quality content and taking a brief look through the backlog it's the norm not an exception. Glad the algorithm decided to pick this one up. I look forward to working my way through the rest of your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the Kind words! I was on 90 subs on Friday so I think we're heading in the right direction! Enjoy
I wish for the days of creativity and writing we had in the early 2000s where even the cheesy writing is better than most modern writings. This series and Psychonauts showcase that creative design and world building is key and can be done with limited resources. Nowadays we don't get such alien concepts and are funneled with basic story writing and world building...It is why I love Morrowind, but hate on Skyrim so much the world is just not as fun to explore when the world just feels lacking. Definitely need more games from the Oddworld lore.
Psychonauts slaps so hard, I back all your points there
So, I'd read some lore before that explained the reason for the slavery of the mudokens and then turning them into food was because originally they all (the glukkens and mudokens) worshipped in much the same way, but the gods chose the mudokens (the paw print on the moon) and their greed and anger at glukkons not being the chosen people, led them to lead mudokens to their ruin
Ahh thank you!
@@SmoothBrainGaming yeah, no worries. I figure with all the effort you put in here, that if you didn't already know it'd be some neat info
Such rich lore. I love these games
Glad you enjoyed!
Smooth two things one did my last comment came in and two what do you think of fromsoftware approach to storytelling
Yes just replied i think, and I really like from softwares stuff there’s a sekiro vid on this channel, I remember watching Vaati’s videos on repeat
@SmoothBrainGaming what about there approach to storytelling because I've seen people exspesly the ones who don't like these games say there is no story what do you think
I think the story is there but you do have to dig for it in a lot of cases, you could quite easily miss a lot if you're not actively trying to find it. They do keep the main plot there though I grew up with those games though and like them all so I'm a bit Bias
Loved the ending vignette.
Thank you! Always the hardest thing to decide on the vids
Grats on this video blowing up. Hopefully you will get some more views on your other reviews. They are great.
Thank you so much!
back when games were good
Older games did slap a bit harder for sure
NECRONS, WHERE? FOR THE EMPEROR.
Abhor the mutant!
Loved this game as a kid. Shame they don't make anymore 😔
They remade oddysee and make a reimagining of exodus called soul storm! No munch or stranger type games though
Buddy, you just saw what itches need scratching with that veiw pop
comment for the algroithim
You’re a saint!
Dude this is a super great video for such a small channel! Love oddsworld, and Im glad its getting so much attention!
Thank you! It seems to have been grabbed by the algo I feel like lulu currently!
This was a really amazing review, I love your tone of speaking and how thoughtfully you express your ideas. Super entertaining and thorough. I hope the DEI stuff wasn’t tipping a hat towards culture war stuff, it’s an interesting thought to consider with how it’s implemented in the setting, but it will inevitably draw the ‘anti-woke’ crusader guys that trawl through small channels like this to encourage bad faith discussions. Regardless, amazing review and you’ve convinced me to give the game a shot!
Yeah I’d like to keep the politics away from the channel it just felt like something to raise as it’s a change from the older games and in this case I’d say that while it seemed out of place when I first started the game by the time you’re in the thick of it they make good use of the different characters and obviously put a lot of thought into their designs instead of just trying to tick boxes. It’s a very positive example of representation and a lot of games can learn some lessons from it so I thought I’d address it before someone did in a non constructive way in the comments you know
I grew up playing munches odyssey all the Time and I always wanted more from munch because he was my favorite guy and still is
He’s a good lil Gabbit
Great video ps do you know crypt tv
Thank you! I watched some of their older stuff a while ago
@SmoothBrainGaming what do you think of it and what about there newer stuff?
I remember liking them but this was like 6 years ago, I’ll look at their new stuff as I’d forgot about them, what’s your opinion?
I to do like there old stuff look see and mordeo are classic in my book. As for the newer stuff while for the most part not as good as the older stuff I still overall like it like there a video called meat cleaver and it was really funny you should check it out. Ps what did you think when you did see their newer stuff
Id agree with you there, I’ll take a look and let you know :)
always seen that oddworld mobile game seems like am not the only one
Your comment just taught me they’re all on mobile too omg
I played the shit out of the first. Never beat it. Dont know why, think i couldnt save it for some reason
Back in the days where I used to leave the console on rather than lose my place hahaha
@SmoothBrainGaming yeah think the farthest i got was past the factory in the door place in the trees. Always wanted to keep going but I didn't know what I was supposed to do lmao
i played this as a kid was fun but i forgot about it untill now
Fun Fact!: Meeches being harvested to extinction was actually a choice due to them being unable to be implemented in time for the game!
That is a very fun fact, I did wonder if they had any relation to the fleeches we see in the next game but never looked into it
Stranger's Wrath is a game I still think about years after playing it. So strange and unique. I wish it got a sequel.
I would eat one of those up, they had an interesting catalogue of games that never got made. I'm hoping with soul storm out now we get something Stranger soon
Ok, i'm not one to give kudos to TH-cam at all but the algorithm has been on point in these last couple of weeks, this vid's exactly what i've been hoping for with Oddworld.
Hope you enjoy!
These games allways made me feel emotions
The first two were heavy seething rage and frustration for me, so glad I got to record Stranger last
@SmoothBrainGaming munchs oddysee was my first game or even knowing about the world. It hit hard and still does... like I was the character in the game when playing
It's like my brain went to mist and I was in there
That game did slap to be fair
@SmoothBrainGaming most emotional one. Stranger was best gameplay. There should be another game about a human world he was making but didn't
Ha ha ha, ha ha (fart) (fart) Ha ha ha, ha ha OK. Follow me.
I frequently regret I didn't pick up Stranger's Wrath on my OUYA
What about odd world soul storm??
Just covering the old line of games here before the remake of odyssey and soulstorm that came after it
Abes oddysee and exoddus are my 2 favourite games! Can't wait to see this video!
Hope you enjoy!!
Fellow Oddworld fan, commenting for the algorithm! Great video.
Thank you fellow fan! Hope you enjoyed!
Wow that rattling is a.....choice. Not annoying at all
It comes up as frequently as you can imagine, never stopped being unsettling as the monster can one bang you
Great algerithim pull
It’s blessed me with an audience glad you enjoyed!
"Now thats how u slam the boys"
Really love the video, didn't think oddworld had so much story. Definitely going to keep watching this channel
Thank you glad you enjoyed it!
An hour and a half Oddworld video released at the start of 2025? Oh my god YES
Hope you enjoy!!!
Thank you!!!
No -thank you!!!
When I was a kid, I remember getting the bad ending in Munch's Oddysee even though I thought I was doing everything possible to save the captives. I felt like I was cheated considering how long the game was and how much manual puzzle work was involved that I never did try again for the good ending.
I don’t blame you I would’ve been so upset
i remember seeing these games at blockbuster as a little kid but i was too into halo to care haha
Halo 3 did have the monopoly on my childhood for sure
Never played oddworld and was never interested in it But ill listen to a video explaining it
Enjoy!
Odd world is so comforting to me and this was so chill I ended up falling asleep in such a gentle way to this. Consider me subbed!
Wow! Thank you! Glad you enjoyed
First 2 games are in my all time top 10. Next few games are close to my all time worst. The games did not benefit from the switch to early/mid-gen 3d.
I think munch’s shows that the most, I loved strangers though but there’s some heavy nostalgia goggles on for me
