Thanks a lot. Hoping to use this video to help make my son a OO layout. I have no idea about model railways (he does), have basic wood work skill and zero soldering skills. Wish me luck!
@@victoriabaines6978 Indeed good luck 👍 Just double check your track plan against your base board, My curves come a little to close to the "wall" for my likeing. Im stuck with it now bit at least it all works 😋
@LetsMakeTracks2023 will do. Tbh, I don't have a track plan (he has millions though) we've been trying to work out a solution for storage as it will need to on either the lounge floor or dining table and put away when I need it to be. Now we've got an idea, I can look at sizes and plans. Thinking of around 6'x4' when opened out.
@@victoriabaines6978 6×4 Is a popular choice for a 00 layout, I can recommend 3d rail. You can set your baseboard size and then use hornby and/or Peco track pieces to see how it fits. Free version will only let you use 50 track pieces at a time thou.

that was like fonzie hitting the jukebox.
I sent my Class 08 (TT120) loco back for repair because the rear coupler fell off. After 3 months I have been informed that is damaged beyond repair. and are trying to source another one. What the hell are they doing with them? It was the blue livery which is no longer available, I wonder if someone at Hornby is taking them and selling them on eBay because this is the 3rd time I've heard of this with the blue 08.
@@davidharle952 It may have been the same fault with my 08. A small piece of metal that holds the coupling in place broke off, this piece is a part of the chassis so would need replacing. The problem is the part itself (chassis) is readily available but not painted correctly for the Blue 08 (Yellow Buffer beam) Oh a seperate note my Mallard body was deamed damaged beyond repair and a brand new replacemnet was sent back to me. However I did request they return the original body shell so I could salvage the etched name plates which Hornby agreed too. But I would strongly suggest you phone Hornby customer services with your concern and talk it over as making allogations against staff can be quite damaging to the Hornby brand. And I am very confident if you tell Hornby to just return your 08 (as is) they will, but as they have said they are trying to source an appropriate part and that will take time.
Hi there! I wanted to start by saying a huge thank you for your time yesterday. I brought my son to Spa Valley and he absolutely fell in love with you model of the station and the group of 4 engines you had next to it. You might remember us, you talked him through a fair bit and he was so happy after we left and hasn’t stopped talking about it I think we’re going to try and get him his first set for his birthday this week. I just can’t quite recall the gauge of the engines you had there? Apologies if my terminology is off, I’m completely new to this too. Would you mind sharing what size they were so that I can look for the same? Thanks again
Thank you 😁 Im glad your lad had a good time at the Model Show and It makes me happy knowing Iv left a good impression. The scale is known as TT1:120 Iv put a like below to one of the starter set's. There are 2 currently available I remember your lad being a Flying Scotsman Fan but the locomotive is only available as a solo item and NOT in a set. I only mention this as I know some people have been caught out buying "The Scotsman" set So depends on how you would like to build his collection. If you need any more advise please dont hesitate to reach out on here or my facebook page Im always happy to help. Happy Modeling 🙂 prf.hn/l/NdyQXMM
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 Thanks so much for the advice. Yes he loved the Scotsman and The Mallard. I did notice the The Scotsman and The Easterner set. What is the difference then? I’d like to go with the gauge that is the most popular or has the most available items overall. To your knowledge would that likely be TT?
@@stevehughes9266 The TT120 is still new at the moment so the range is somewhat limited in all honesty. But is growing over time. You can scroll thru the range on the Hornby site under the TT section and see what takes your fancie. The starter sets are the same set up in regards to track and control, the only difference is the Locomotive & Rolling stock that it comes with. Saying that, there is the Digital sound versions that chuff and whistle they are controled with a smart phone or tablet (Please check compatability) Depending on how long you have untill his birthday (also taking into account the few days Hornby may take to deliver) I could put together a video for the starter sets if that is of use to you? This video was on my to do list anyhow 🙂
Nice - made me smile!
Thanks Greg 🙂
DDC Concepts has now released a smaller powerbank for stay alive tt120 locos
Indeed, Good news for all scales 🙂
I’ve got to be honest and say, I felt this interview feels a bit like your own personal wish list and is too heavily steam biased. Having just taken the plunge in TT, I think some of your questions are for very niche subjects. The two guys from Hornby have some strange views at times. If the Class 08 in BR Blue sold out, why not put a new version in this years catalogue? Why do Hornby seem so surprised that BR Blue locos sell? Do they ever look at what their competitors are selling? Do they never wonder why the likes of Bachmann and Accurascale release multiple BR Blue versions of their locos to satisfy demand? Quite why the Class 47, a loco that has worked the length and breadth of the country, is still yet to start even the research stage, completely baffles me! Surely, this should have been one of the first models prioritised! At the stage TT:120 is at, getting wide appeal subjects out to market is surely going to help get the range off the ground. A black 5, GWR 57XX and 9F also seem strange not to have been prioritised? Why was there not a Mk1 TSO and SK at launch? This is probably the most numerous coach ever priced in the UK! And why are there no Blue & Grey Mk1’s? Hornby seem to be in total denial that the BR Blue era ever existed! I appreciate they can’t do everything at once, but at least prioritise the most commercial subjects first. In fairness to them, the Class 37 & 66 are definitely steps in the right direction, but why is there no EWS livery 66 when they’re launched? This livery is the most numerous on the class and still in existence almost 25 years after the 66’s were launched! The development guy said the Class 31 is only at the research stage, so why on earth did Hornby stake their claim to this and prevent Heljan entering the TT market? Talk about shoot yourself in the foot! Had Heljan been allowed to proceed, we could have more models to market and the scale could be growing faster. Rather than trying the ‘spray and pray’ method, doing one model for each of the big four and sporadic diesel releases, I think they would have been better concentrating in one area first (perhaps GWR,) and giving a more credible offer first, before moving onto another area.Putting personal preferences aside, I do think going down the Diesel & Electric route first, may have been more prudent, as the subjects have, arguably greater commercial and larger geographical appeal than some of the steam releases do. I really hope Hornby make a success of TT, but watching this, my biggest worry is that they will abandon it, due to lack of take up in the scale, sadly because of their strategy in launching a brand new scale.
I do get what your saying about my questions. I did have others lined up but Mac & Peachy got there interview request in first and after watching their video I had to change half my questions with only a few days befor my turn.
i suggest sir to delve into companies like Piko, Tillig-Bahn and Roco for more TT-scale models there also is MTB if you are interested in an modern american loco although its only a small SW 1200 switcher but mostly these companies make spanish, german and french locomotives and Matu makes one type of a polish EP-09 but the cost is crazy expensive like 700 quid also Piko makes in TT scale the german ICE 3 which visited London st Pancras station in 2010 (sorry for writing/spelling mistakes, english is not my first language)
I am tempted by some of the steamers currently available from Arnold. If Money allowes I may get atleast 1 in the future.
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 honestly Arnold made a good choice choosing that specific loco because only Arnold is selling it right now and producing it (except custom made models i never saw a ready to run german 58)
@@maxkin882 It must have been a good choice, I never considered european untill I saw it. Green or Black thou 🤔 Im torn
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 to me both look great but green would be more unique (i cant say per say that because im more into polish national railway a.k.a. PKP) also suprised that i wasnt subscribed i was sure i pressed it but maybe was my imagination?
I got there eventually with subtitles. Not much positive news I guess about upcoming. Nice to hear the J50 is still on track. I meant to ask about the era 5 08. That shouldn’t be too difficult
The Green one? I believe thats still on track for end of this year.
Its a real shame he didn't own up on the 6 pin, I was told after ringing Hornby that it is not expected till September 2025.
@@BlackCountryLad Your the second person to mention Sept 2025. Not sure when either of you contacted Hornby so I cant say if Martyn may have chased it up after I asked. But I would be surprised if he dident know at the time I asked.
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 spoke to Hornby yesterday at 12:05 and had a 10 minute call. I was left in no doubt it would be September 2025. I was promised a call back by a senior manager. Will give them till Friday and will chase. I also spoke to Rails of Sheffield and ask did they have any other suppliers with decoder supply issues they said no.
Pity he had to go, i guess we'll just have to see if theres gonna be any legal way of buying tt120 in Australia....
@@themidlandconnection I did send over the remainder of my questions, so will follow up in a few days if I dont hear anything
You can legally buy it in Australia, at full RRP plus extra mark up added by the wholesaler, from model shops in Australia or just buy it at a sensible price from UK shops. Now the TT120 club doesn’t offer any discount or anything there’s absolutely no reason to buy direct from Hornby anymore
@47606odin there's word about that the Australian distributor, "Southern model supplies" is looking to ditch the range due to slow pickup (we still can't buy any locos apart from the gresley pacifics)
@@themidlandconnection It's almost impossible to get get here! That's why no one is buying it, it's not here to buy!
I was at the Brisbane Model Train Show earlier this year. Nothing from Hornby or anyone else on display or on offer for the TT120 Range. I did hear at the show that because Hornby were selective on who could sell the range the majority of the vendors are boycotting it. That's what I was told. Hobbyrama in Brisbane does have a small TT120 stock display and do mail orders all over the country. I bought some TT120 Figures from them for my Tri-ang TT layout. Hope that helps. Happy Modelling. Mon
Thanks for asking about the tankers. Shame there’s no more atm. Shows you’ve got to be fast to get them
No worries, It does show you never know whats gonna be a top seller. Thanks for watching.
No restocking of the TTA?? Ludicrous bread and butter diesel era wagons! Seriously this is a misjudgment and needs addressing
I do belive the number was misjudged, But they have not been canceled completly, We just have to wait and see what TTA's are next.
Love it

@@trevorbellTT120 Thank you 😁 Its nice to get that confirmation Im not just doing this for themself, and others enjoy what Im doing.
Congratulations keep them coming 👍
@@anthknill Thank you 😁
Well done on the first year!
@@gregmacdonald927 Thank you, It has been uphill at times.
No, the paint on the pickups are to hide the phosphor bronze material, from view...the pickups come nowhere near the chassis block, the main problem was a the sprung keeper plate contacts..careful cleaning and service all thats needed..
I can only speculate the contact as Im in need of a multi meter to check such things. But the paint did make the model function again last time.
It just may be that the problem existed on the TT120 but was missed then was put back in repaired stock and unlucky you received it as a replacement. I would ask for the parts and do the repairs myself. Great video, Jersey Bill
On inpection the tab was part of the chassis, so would need a complete dissambley. Have sent off to Hornby anyway so will see what they have done when it returns.
If you have NEVER seen a 3D printer then these may be a good option. If you have seen one before then they are not. There are plenty of printers that are much better value for money.
I did get that impression. This printer is for those very early begginers.
Unfortunate choice of music 😂
Whys that?
So they picked up a bunch of old Micro 3D printers and are just reselling those?
I personally have no knowlege if these are a rebrand or otherwise, but I can see the resemblence after a quick google.
Definitely a rebadge of the EasythreeD Nano, a 5 year old entry level printer
I beg anybody that sees this video absolutely never buy this 3D printer it is old and outdated it will put you off 3d printing
Having looked into it after the demo I have seen the previous version. For my personal use I would probably lean towards a resign printer any how.
Jesus Christ I just saw the close up what layer height is he printing these models on my god they are disgustingly bad
I will admit those layers did stand out to me.
this 3D printer is not worth £30 let alone £130 and definitely not worth it its a rebrand of a another failed 3d print the best starter printer you can get the bambu A1 mini and its only £169 on sale at the min
I dont doubt there are better and cheaper printers available. It is what is is.
I bought one. Got 1 1/2 prints out of before ot wouldn't do anything. Had no sd card with it had ro borrow one from a friend who owns one. I would suggest to avoid this printer, spend a bit more and get another one. Bit i also wrote a review on the humbrol website uet the review jas never been pit ip in the web so im guessing someone at humbrol wanta to hide the problems. And this wasn't the first 3d printer i have having had 3 before this so know my way around them yet this was a nightmare.
Did you contact customer services?
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 I did. They told me to send it back so they could look at it. Done that and not heard from them in weeks even when I've called them bay for an update. Will give them one more chance then the video I have will be used on my channel to show the issues I've had. But either way I would advise to avoid it as it's not even their own design or coding. It's a 5 year old machine that all I can think of is the previous manufacturer sold off in bulk and humbrol rebadged and sent out not knowing about it. That's all I can sumise
@@sodor_dan-da-man for repairs they need about 28 days so may be best to see out that time first.
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 that time ran out on Monday just gone.
@@sodor_dan-da-man Fair enough. Give them one more call and see how you feel after that.
You are the best
I appreciate the complement, But I have a long way to go for that title 🙂
Good glad everything is going well for you
Indeed. Shame about the bank balance and falling behind with the new releases but it is what it is, Ill catch up 🙂
Bad luck. All my TT loco's have behaved perfectly and are excellent! Well done Hornby, keep it up.😀
Indeed. I personally cannot fault the models or the aftercare I have been provided. I am very happy with the service I have recieved so far, there are many other companys I imagine would have palmed me off as wear and tear or my own doing.
They keep some back for replacement purposes.
That does make sence, I was just surprised so can not fault them for it 🙂
Those foam bits in the packaging is what I call “Ghost Poo”
Lol I may have to use that if I get any more 🤣 👻💩
I call them packing wotsits.
What were the issued with the other two? I hold my breath every time I start up my locomotives. So far only an HM7000 decoder failure
Non runners. I have my suspitions on the cause but need to confirm before I can speculate. (Not Hornbys Fault)
Sorry to hear about your woes. Made in China and probably not QA and tested in the UK doesn’t help.
Pros and cons of foreign manufature. Apart from the NEM pocket (which may or may not have been my own fault anyway) Iv never had any faulty items from Hornby personally all the way back to the 90's when I started with 00
They wouldn’t test 3000+ anyway, only a sample
I think a lot of people are looking at this from a bit of a wonky angle: a lot of the time in the repair world, there will be a shelf full of repaired examples that have been returned to stock configuration. When your loco gets there, it will be repaired in due course, but it’ll go onto a big shelf of broken locos. The replacement will be sent to you from their ‘Repaired’ stock as such It’s likely not to be the same loco you sent in as that would take too long (in the eyes of a big company like Hornby, as apposed to your local in-house mender at the local model shop). Hornby have to do it in this less personal/more industrial style because they’ll be getting A LOT of through-put, probably a lot more than you think. I’ve no info if that’s what Hornby are doing in this instance, but it sounds like it by the way of your returned model being a different unit. I’m surprised they’re doing this with something personal as models, but efficiency will ALWAYS be a goal for a company because of the old adage about time equating to bunce. :)
That does make sence and I do understand why they would do it this way. I am greatful for the replacement Im just a bit too sentimental and maybe thats giving off a negitive impression of my experience im not sure. But will see what happens when they return as the pacifics have etched plates attached which I have made hornby aware of.
For a new scale it aint looking bright aint it? If that was one of my engines replaced I would have a FIT.. One of the reasons why N-scale is my thing...outside of the occasional 1:700 scale ship (I'm picky about which ones I get, and I have 2 to finish), RC car, 1:64 truck/lorry, or plastic military models. Yes the internals are simpler to maintain, but if the couplers fail...it's just a screw, I can tap, and replace the coupler box if needed, or replace the coupler it's self. I'd also like to advise, that seeing these videos gives me a heads up. NEM pockets failing? I'll just glue the darn thing on, as it'd be to costly to pay for customs to get the engine overseas & back, and as I do N scale, I only have 2 standards, both fall under the knuckle coupler. As for pickup issues...I regularly have to maintain my pickups due to the nature of my collection, I see this as a possible end to my UK sub-collection before it's even begun, as Hornby is the only one available here, and even then in limited numbers, but then again..there is Bachmann...I'm not gonna pretend that they make good or bad models because 3 of my flagship locomotives previously were Bachmann (A Santa Fe F7A, CSX GP40-2, followed by a Southern Pacific GS-4), so maybe I pay a lil' extra to gamble. Though, I also do have another issue...supply...it's easier for me to hunt down obscure inter-war era railroad equipment than it is to find any European railroad equipment, and a cheaper costs too, and that is excluding the Japanese...especially any Shinkansen...those seem to be as common as a certain famous group of articulated steam locomotives produced by ALco.
I remain optimistic its just some teething trouble. I have my suspitions over the 2 more recent breakdowns and its not the fault of hornby.
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 Teething issues is a good way to put it, but one would think the manufactures test models before hand right? Like food & drink, quality control is essential. The nature of pick-ups are the thing I look for. I tend to trade detail & sound for an engine that I can work on. Means I don't get the newest model, but aswell. I'd rather have a runner than a museum piece I cant maintain because I'm afraid of it crumbling in my hands. The older the model too, the more reliable I find it to be.
@@BattleshipOrion agreed. But to play the devils advocate, Hornby are putting 100% faith in there overseas factorys/contractors to do all of that for them. I cant see them opening up that many in the warehouse that I assume is seperate to their corporate offices in Margate
@@BattleshipOrionYou can’t compare a yoghurt to a complex scale model😂😂
I still don’t get how Hornby can stay in business with the crap they send to their customers. I have trains from all kinds of manufacturer, and they are probably the worst when it comes to quality, detailing & value for money.
My models did behave for almost a year befor I had any issues, And the other 2 I believe was an issue within my layout rather than a faulty model. Obviously I cant speak for everyones experience but mine so far has been positive regardless of the breakdowns. Like any full sized machine such as a car the locos need care and maintainance To stay at there best for longer. And at the smaller size certain elements are more delicate than there full size counterparts.
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 thanks for your response. I recently bought some new OO scale items from Hornby, and had issues from the get go that are due to poor design/quality. I also follow some other channels and I hear almost everywhere folks complaining about Hornby. If I compare their items with some of the other OO scale brands as well as my HO scale rolling stock, it’s like night & day. And to top things off, they are way too expensive for what they offer…
A loud minority of people with problems can easily look like a loud majority when viewed through the lensing of the interwebs. They produce these things by the thousands or tens of thousands. We see maybe a hundred people if that loudly complain... if there was a HUGE problem there would surely be a more vocal outpouring. Is not fun when something goes wrong and things do go wrong but it's perhaps not as massive as we think.
@@Samstrainss Thanks for your comment. I fully agree, however, if you have no reference to other products (Hornby makes almost exclusively British rolling stock), it's hard to form an opinion how Hornby compares to other products. I have a range of manufacturers that are in most cases vastly better in regards of design, engineering, quality, detail etc. that offer a significantly better value for the money. Since most folks in the UK build British themed layouts in OO scale, they probably have never seen HO scale products of the likes of Marklin, Fleischmann, Piko, Roco, Rivarossi etc. They may have OO scale rolling stock by Lima or Bachmann, who both make HO scale items as well. Both of these companies have evolved into making very nice products that I personally think are head and shoulders above what Hornby offers. I could go on and on, but I think I made my point...
@@tomsmaerklintrainlayout6742 difference markets and people within them value different things I guess, might even attribute the continued existence of OO to that, just as we may attribute the continuation of AC in HO to that. Very hard to say hornby bad or hornby good without appeal to deeply personal factors, even the engineering side, the quality side the detail side are as you say all relative and ultimately its a model of something it's not just a generic train and in many cases it is the only show in town. Having scratch built things anything RTR is a gift I'm kind of loathe to view too harshly. *probably gonna say how can engineering he personal, what you use the end product for is personal so the criteria to judge how well engineered it is are formed on the back of this. If you don't need a loco that in real life pulled 4 or 5 carriages to pull 20 because you are making a layout that is meant to look like a place then it not pulling 20 carriages is kind of irrelevant. Yet this is kind of the basis for a lot of complaints as to hornby products is "it can't pull this arbitrary test" when y'know maybe it's not aimed at doing so. Seen it work the other way as well where a UK modeller gets shocked at how much a US model can pull and it's kinda not shocking, it's engineered to do so because train lengths are generally longer there so to model that you engineer towards that. Lot of models are being misconceived as bad or good for doing or not doing things that the design brief wasn't meant to cover to begin with. The model is being negatively reviewed per toy standards or the toy is being reviewed per model standards.
I had to send my Blink Bonney TT120 and also the KAWV 00 back. I’m convinced they sent new ones, not complaining and thanked them. Mind you I don’t run either of them I’ll keep them in the box! Thanks for the report, and good luck!😊
Indeed. I think I may have missed the mark abit here thou. I eco your words I am greatful Hornby decided to replace the model instead of just replacing the pickups. Glad you liked the video 🙂
Yeah have to say that their repair department is very good. However you also have to ask why?. Are they trying to keep us sweet because so much is going back to them?.
It is a possibility, But even if your product is reliable it is always a benifet to have good customer service and repair/replace facilitys. Such as accurascales recent model life time garrantee.
As seems to be the case a little too frequently, people are voicing concerns over failures and general quality issues. I've had a number of locos go back (which, as I live in France, costs Hornby a lot considering they organise a free pick-up and, obviously, return to France). There must be some point at which it becomes more cost-effective to increase quality control than to have disgruntled customers (who many not come back). There will always be some things that slip through the net but, nonetheless. I'm determined to stick with the scale by now but, unfortunately, I am tending to expect the worse and be pleased when everything is okay. Not quite how it should be...
You know what they say bad news travels further. Iv had all 3 of the mentioned moneles for almost a year with no issues untill recently. And I think I know the cause for the 2 LNER pacifics per disscussion with Hornby but will investigate properly for the follow up video.
Nice baseboard! Do you happen to have a link of where you got your hinges from? I can’t find them anyway. Do these hinges they have a specific name?

@@LetsMakeTracks2023 thanks!
I trod on a pendolino driving car and crushed it. Sent it to Hornby for repair. Got a new one back no charge!
Thats good, Was it more body shell damage than mechanical?
Hi since tt120 started I have 9 engines and 7 have gone back the latest three are two class 50’s and intercity 125 very disappointed with Hornby
It is unfortunate such things happen, Did they go back for repair or return?
@@LetsMakeTracks2023 repair but not buying anymore
@@ianhughes-zf1ll Thats fair enough, hopefully all of your fleet are behaving now and you are enjoying what you have.
Well I am very pleased with Hornby, I have many, many TT 120 locos and chassis's fitted in other bodies (over 70) and not had one problem. Some chassis's I have cut up, ground metal away and still they run happily so nothing but praise for Hornby locos.
Hope all your locos get sorted! My digital Trigo loco is sick with a motor overcurrent issue - going back to Hornby.
Worst case scenario is they get replaced like the 08 did. Hopefully they see the note about retaining the body shells so I dont lose my etched name plates.
Just a reminder what complex delicate models these are.
Indeed.
Interesting. My 08 also has some damage to the buffers and coupling after someone knocked it off the track.,Need to send back to Hornby.
Best to get it looked at befor the warrenty expires, not sure how long thatvis thou.
That back to back spacing really is something not to be underestimated. Well done Greg
Indeed, was going to use it on the 08 to see if it helped over points, But nem pocket feel off so its off on another trip to Margate.
Wasn’t expecting this! Thanks very much for the plug. 🎉🎉Delighted they’ve worked well for you.
No problem 👍

Thank you 🙂
My layout is going to be an urban setting and this will fit in nicely, thanks. My other problem is filling in the centre of the layout. Most other layouts have rolling hills and green fields but that's no good for an urban setting. Any ideas?
For mine im extending the urban feel with terriced houses and other buildings. There is some good choice on ebay for 3d prints but will get pricey. The other option is printable kits that are scaled down to TT120.
