Crankshaft Journal explores our obsession with personal transport, what our vehicles say about us and how they affect our lives. We focus on motorcycles, mostly vintage, and how to keep them on the road. However, bicycles, scooters, cars, aircraft, public transit and alternative fuels are fair game.

Buying Used Motorcycle Parts on eBay
มุมมอง 5943 ปีที่แล้ว
Working on old bikes means you have get comfortable with buying parts from online sources on specialized platforms like eBay Motors. Most of these are private sellers, and learning to trust them (and your judgement) takes practice. Here's my experience with a recent purchase.

Suzuki GS1100L Ride and Review: Why Early Japanese Cruisers are Worth a Look
มุมมอง 22K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Our 1982 Suzuki is one of many Japanese cruiser designs from the late '70s and early '80s that vintage motorcycle fans often overlook. But the old machine holds its own among today's bikes.

Honda CL350 Scrambler Ride and Review
มุมมอง 69K4 ปีที่แล้ว
We found this 1970 Honda CL350 on Craigslist, refurbished it mechanically, gave it a good cleaning and now use it regularly. As it turns out, a 50-year-old motorcycle can teach us a lot about machinery, ourselves and the joy of riding.

Crankshaft Journal's month-long road test of Zero Motorcycles' electric-powered SR/F revealed much about what owners can expect from the machine.
Brilliantly done. There are not many motorcycle Ytube videos done this well. Would love to hang out with this chap. Talk old bikes.
Nice video.., just subbed... thanks for sharing!
Fantastic video. Bravo.
Great Review, Mr. Big Brain 💯❤️👍🤠Yee-Haw🫡
Old bikes are the best
I wish they would bring such machines back 👍
What a great little video! Made my day (especially since I own a GS850L)
Yeah, they imitated Harley? Only they left out the shitty handling and crappy quality😅 oh yeah, and the outdated V-twin design… Of course that came back with later Japanese cruisers like the Vulcan… But even those out handle an outperform a Harley any day of the week
great video I restored a 69 model CL350 love them. thanks for taking me for the ride
Beautiful "attempt"at a T100 C, but its still a Honda 😂 👍
Hi Jonathan. Hope all is well with you. Noticed that you haven't posted in a bit. Thanks for the journey back into time. CL350, my first bike. Fond memories. Gravitated to Yamaha's XS1100's because I loved their driveshaft and torque. Have three these days. Retired 71 year old electrician who's fortunately in fair enough shape to still ride and enjoy. Best wishes....Paul
Crusers in the 70ties was granpa bike or girly
Any new videos coming? You have a great video/presentation style 🤙
Just discovered your channel. I quite enjoyed your talks. Sadly, your videos are two or three years old. I hope you haven't quit the scene. 👍✌🤙
So nice!! Great storytelling, as well! Question for you - I'm actually going to be traveling a bit to look at and hopefully purchase a '72 CL350 this weekend (Sunday). I wonder if you ever carry a passenger and how was the high position of the exhaust for the likeliehood of them getting a good leg burn?? It looks like a solid possibility. Thanks in advance for yours or anyone else who might have experience with carrying someone on the back.
Informative video thanks. I'm definitely going to buy one of these classic bikes
As a kid I grew up with motorcycles just like this 350. My first quick bike experience was on a 68’ 305 Super Hawk. Then followed with three 71’ bikes. A CL175 and a SL350 and a lowly SL100. Though just a 100cc I could make that bike fly off road. Later in the 90’s I found a 75’ Kawasaki cast aside and left intact but to degrade in neglect. Well that Kawasaki was a 75’ Z1b 900cc. I cleaned and gave it some much needed love to get it running in tip top shape. Today that cast off has more value than my modern ZX6R x3.
Little review of the Honda, mostly ride and philosophy of riding vintage bikes. I want to know more about this bike.
How I wish I never sold my early 70s chopped 350 twin scrambler.
I have my eye on a 83’ GS1100, I’ll hopefully see it this Saturday! Update: Bought it!
@here good review, I appreciate your honesty about old bikes.
I love this stuff
I had 73 larger fuel tank .
Well done! Exactly how I look at vintage bikes too!
I'm a superb mechanic and these bikes can be made brand new. It's about money and time .
My first street bike was a '78 GS1000. Good power and handled nice. Wide comfy seat. I ride a B-King 1340 now. Not sure what jetting you have in that, but the bike would run better with the baffle put back into the header. Enjoy!
I like the Suzuki FUEL GAUGES!!!
far better than today's highly strung LC engines, simple and easy to maintain, even you could service this engine after watching a few TH-cam videos, convert it to CDI ignition which costs about $200 for a good system and the bike will run like a swiss watch, oil filter and plug changed every 5000 miles and this will outlast you by about another 3-4 lives easily, as for the drum brakes they are more than adequate for the bike, it's a double shoe front which has more stopping power than many disk systems on the cheaper none Brembo system bikes of today, if you need to you can convert it to hydraulic with a plug-n-play conversion but there is no real need to do that,
If I could have afforded this bike back in 82, I would be the happiest man on earth. I could not afford it and it wasn't sold in my country. I rode the 400L, and with my soft luggage carried between my back and the sissy backrest, I had travelled, for the first time, a thousand and a half miles very comfortably albeit without wind protection. Who needed a Goldwing? Thank you for this video, a reminder of halcyon days.
Excellent video. keep up the good work!
Great looking bike. Working on an 81 I got from a friend.
Really enjoyed the voice over on this, nice video man.
I love your channel and I love watching your videos as well I like your perspective and personality. I think your cool personally. That Suzuki 1100L was One of my favorite motorcycles. What's not to like about it and those Suzuki Ls luxury. Comfort performance reliability. Civility. Smoothness. Nice blend of technology without being overly complicated. I prefer the drive shaft versions the gs gls
Nice! I like your delivery, and editing! Laid back, easy going, just like the bike!
Thanks Jon, I have a G a GK and an L. Three for under four.
Bought one in 1968 new,. Rode it 1,000's of miles. First year had a few issues but I was a motorhead then so no biggie. Lots of memories.still riding @ 72 .
Hello, I’d like to throw it out there if anybody knows, I have one of these, upgraded, goes like 60mph and beyond but I’m way too scared to get up there. I just know it will because I barely crack the throttle and I’m going 35mph. The shake is scary. Previous owner said he upgraded the engine with some kit. Anyway, my lights don’t work. Can’t ride her at night. They use to work but I changed the handlebars, and ever since the lights don’t work. Any idea what could’ve happened? Did I maybe pull them out of the magneto? I think it wouldn’t run if that’s the case. Im lost. I appreciate any kind of advice. Also if anybody knows a way I can get it to not scare the crap out of me going 30mph I appreciate that. Maybe suspension upgrade recommendations. Something to make it a smoother ride at higher speeds. Thank you.
Do you still have that one: Will you sell it to me?
This is a lovely piece, and very inspirational. Nicely narrated and photographed. It is interesting how many people will restore the engine on an older bike such as this, ignoring the suspension, and then live with the poor road manners that could have been addressed by upgrading the fork and shock components. As the owner of a CB450K2, I certainly resonate to your comments about cable controls and drum brakes, though.
Beautiful, great sounding bike
Gday from New Zealand, one question, can rhe brakes lock up on these old bikes? I find them fascinating but worry about the brakes.great video cheers
Great video, great breakdown of how it is to ride an old motorcycle!
Love my 1982 GS1100GK. Bought it 2021, just got it road ready this season!
I know this is an older video, but I really enjoyed it. I really got into motorcycles in the early eighties and there were really some nice machines, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, I loved them all.
Still have my gold 1972 CL350 I bought in my youth. Needs some tlc but she's all there. Great memories on and off road with her!
I own an 82 GS1100 GK. Not quite a cruiser, its like a superbike disguised as a bagger. Will probably cafe it once i solve a couple gas-leak issues. Anyways, good to see a review on the old Suzuki GS1100!
I've never heard anyone talk so much, yap yap yap yap.
Beautiful bike! Really love classic’s! Also thanks for the wrapping tips, im wrapping my pipes this week
Nice garage and collection! I recently fine tuned my 71 CB350 that hadn't run good even when it was new. Lots of mods to update the engine but the whole 50+ years of it's existance it was always one of the carbs. Mikuni VM32s got it absolutely singing!
I just found your channel and love the videos. I live in Northern Ontario and am no stranger to riding on days like this.
