@@Zna_se_ko_kosi_a_ko_vodu_nosi Welcome to DMR radios, I've had very similar experiences with Retevis, yet some report a good experience. Keep in mind tons of variables need to be taken into account, location of your friend even on campus interference at his location versus yours. A good test would be line of sight outside, power level antenna impedance at the frequency is also a factor. Thank you.

@@W4KWS , it can be from any frequency like FM-broadcast @ 90 Mhz ... or something on 172 Mhz or even 460 Mhz ... to identify the culprit you would need to scan the whole spectrum using a very small antenna ( 2cm's) to only receive very loud signals, 1st start with the bands below the tuned frequency on your Yaesu ... Once you have identified a few, try to discover which one is the one causing the overloading. I know how to do that , but it's a little to long story to spell out here ... @@W4KWS I picked up a 820S for $160 shipped a few years ago. And also had a 830S sent to me by a ham in FLA who was going to throw it out. I fixed it, re-capped it (all the caps) and realigned it. What an outstanding receiver! And it's got the gorgeous analog RF speech processor for transmit, as well. As does the 820S! Congrats again on the station!

The quality of the reception is completely modified as seen initially it will sound like its actually attenuating the signal, not sure what the board is doing maybe a combination of preamp and DNR from the Yaesu HF rigs, I suspect a firmware update may enhance this feature if an algorithm is in use that might be upgradable. @@W4KWS , Problem discovered ! ... the SDX-button switches both the SDX (preamp) and ASP (filter) to ON/OFF ... therefore we can't hear well what the SDX (preamp) itself is doing, because the also switched on filter masks that ...so to hear that you need to remove the filter ... like that you can better indentify (hear) what the disturbance is ... But i think i can already tell what is going on ... When you tune to a steady signal , Not to strong (S2~S3) ... with SDX+ASP to ON ... if you get the effect that the audio cuts out (as shown) ... and you see also that the (RF) Signal-meter fluctuates ... then you might have a "Overloading" also called "'Deafening" or "Saturation" problem, caused by nearby highpowered transmitters on other frequencies (FM-broadcast, Paging systems, Radiocomms) ... So the audio-cutting off (mostly on weak signals) is actually caused by the SDX (High gain RF-Amp) switched ON and amplifying TO MUCH (more then normally would be acceptable to not cause problems) ... Resuming & Proof of my theory : we see the RF S-meter fluctuating when the audio cuts off ... this can only mean that something is going on with the RF and it is actually the RF cutting off (not the ASP-filter)... The only effect i know of that can do that, is RF-overloading ... so that must be it ... that reveals also what Yeasu "magic" SDX trick is ... how it works ... it is simple, they simply let the amp give more gain ... obviously a little to much in some cases ... that's the reason why you can switch it off ... since if it was good in all circumstances , we would not have the need for a switch to switch it off ... So they are doing a (dirty) trick that normally is not done ... namely to much amplification ... which would not pass the test in serious equipment ... it's kind of cheating , entiendes ? .... Let me know if that makes sense and if you have such strong signals nearby ... Interesting case ... i feel like a RF-Detective ... quickly discovering their dirty marketing tricks ... ...It is simple you cant have super-sensitivity (to much gain in this case) with out paying a price ... haaaaaaaaa. ...it can work for some ... but with transmitters nearby it could cause the shown problem.

Thank you for tuning in I love the radio if you have any other question just ask. The sensitivity of the radio is superb! The S-DX feature works nice definitely changes the tone but pulls in the signal and eliminates a lot of noise. Thanks again
