Audio + Lifestyle. A new aesthetic in sound...
OMA The Back Story - Part 6: Ground Floor Completed
Oswalds Mill Audio. A strange name for an unlikely story.
OMA gets its name from a more than 200 year old mill in Eastern Pennsylvania, restored by OMA founder Jonathan Weiss. In that mill Jonathan assembled an impressive collection of vintage cinema and studio audio equipment, especially horn loaded loudspeakers, dating back to the 1930's. Within the walls of this massive mill, Jonathan’s audio obsessions attracted like minded people who congregated there every year for an event which became world famous. This underground community of speaker and horn designers and builders, tube audio and vinyl and tonearm experts became the foundation for launching a whole new approach to high end audio: OMA, Oswalds Mill Audio.

The most incredible space.
Fun is where you find it. knocking other loudspeaker companies that have a more diverse customer base and many different speaker lines for different price points as a result, is mis interpreting the facts. Most serious audio companies have an established design philosophy and work to improve it as fortune and technology improves. Not the random product approach that this guy says they use.
It’s already a little outdated due to the USB-A ports, pretty much already replaced by USB-C nowadays 🤷♂️ I was hoping for maybe a valve amp in there. But that’s a bit too much to ask, considering the space limitations. This is basically OMA/Fleetwood’s version of say a B&W Zeppelin. Just much higher-end and potentially better sounding 😏
The horns that built America🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
They really walk the walk AND talk the talk
Amongst the best looking horn speakers I’ve seen, that still aren’t OTT like a lot of modern high-end horns can be.
Really I’m impressed with this design ❤
To me watches and audio equipment have the commonality of enjoyment, wearing a classic watch, and to me the older stereo equipment 70's 80's etc. the sound the lighting and the look in a home is very cool. I really enjoy this video and the dissuasion hearing both of you opinions and thoughts about watches and audio.
Incredible! I really admire your drive, imagination and ability to undertake such complex projects.❤👍
Love your dedication and appreciation it’s very inspiring.❤😊
I'm itching for a new video!
This smacks of a child who's upset that they're not allowed to hang out with the cool kids. Pretending they don't want to be a cool kid
I like how OMA approaches design and build. But this pompous video is pretty poorly considered. You’re right about *some* audiophiles, but your blanket approach is just ignorant. It’s very possible to enjoy both the equipment and the music itself.
Hi J, what’s your policy on mill spiders? Amazing nano machines or dangerous menaces🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wizard of Oz mk2 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉Capital fellow🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I’m going to classify as visionary. Very interesting🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Bikes like that too🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
i was lucky enough to play some deep house records on this system. Fantastic sound. Captivating design.
"Audio lifestyle" sounds even more effete than "audiophile," which you ridiculed in another video.
Some great thought provoking points, however I think the problem of the Kissa Bar concept in Western Society could almost be interoperated as Anti Social or almost rude, maybe if listening to music in a completely controlled silent environment is desirable, it should be done at home at the individual’s convenience, the concept of the Kissa Bar obviously dates back to a time when this wasn’t possible, due to lack of equipment and source material to play, which obviously isn’t a problem anymore. As the human race becomes more and more insular in developed societies (where most of the younger generation walk around public places with EarPods immersed in their own world of sound and semi private conversations, maybe the Kissa concept isn’t a positive thing, really people need to communicate and socialise more, on the contrary maybe the large club sound systems of Berlin etc where you can become completely immersed in the sound and vibe is a more meaningful, and possibly a more therapeutic sociable proposition! Of course personal music taste and age demographic etc are factors.
Your polemic delivers its message, but in too brutalist and broad-brush a way. I am an audiophile with many friends who, like me, are not seeking the most expensive equipment (many are in DIY circles) but are curious about the variety of ways that music can sound. We enjoy that sonic dimension and do not associate it with wealth but with the variety of experiences possible. We don't sit alone - we discuss things, get together, build things, etc. You likened "audiophile" to "pedophile" to argue that the former is like the latter. But the suffix also attaches to Bibliophile, Cinephile, Anglophile, etc. None of those are pathological fixations. Perhaps you revealed too much when you chose your analogue. I agree some magazines are not helpful, but some are. Google Steve Stone and you'll find an amazing and practical reviewer. Also, the forums are tremendously helpful. Sure there are peacocks there and blowhards. But I have asked many questions and gotten many good answers, real and genuinely helpful dialogue. It's a matter of listening to others and knowing when others are listening to you, answering your questions. Audiogon has many such people, as does AudioCircle and more. People helping people choose good audio. It's not so difficult to find.
Negging on audiophiles is a really dumb strategy for someone that owns a high end audio company. I'm an audiophile, I unapologetically like both audio gear and music. Given the level of fetishism that Jonathan displays towards vintage gear the casual association of audiophiles with pedophiles was particularly obnoxious and dripping with irony. Saying that you want to go to Japan to experience listening bars and vintage audio shops and then insulting both of those things, even calling one "pathetic" made me cringe. The people he talks about that are on the audio component buying treadmill are in their own little hell and Jonathan could use his knowledge to help those folks but in the end he sees them as beneath his contempt (unless, of course, they buy his products). I really believe that Jonathan has a lot of knowledge and insight to share but there was precious little of that to be seen in this video.
With al due Respect to the Video Author, the Japanese did or do NOT build "better" Watches than the Swiss. The same for Audio Gear. The Japanese are obsessed with how the Audio Gesr is set up, and the AC Power to their Houses.
Absolutely fantastic. The preservation of the past and the pinnacle of audio in one amazing place.
Jonathan, you are a fascinating person. So much depth.
Fantastic and informative video. Thank you for sharing!
I'm 61 years old. I've always been a music enthusiast. I sing and play an instrument. I agree with a few things you are saying, but I disagree that the equipment across the board in all price ranges isn't better today than in the past. I sold audio back in the 80s. You can buy equipment today dollar for than you could back then. Yes, there are tons of crap equipment today as well. There were tons of crap equipment back in the day as well. You don't have to spend 10s of thousands of dollars to get great sounding gear today. You can if you want to and have the budget. Just like you can spend hundreds of thousands on an automobile if you want. You can do that with anything. My system consists of a tube integrated amp, high efficiency speakers, a mid priced turntable, mid priced cd player, and mid priced streamer. I have about $7k in my entire system. I've listened to systems costing 10 times that amount that only sound marginally better. If I had the money to spend that amount, perhaps I would. The biggest problem right now is there aren't any hifi stores around where you can audition equipment, mix and match components, and put together what sounds best to you. Only if you live in a major city do you have that option. Unless you know what you are doing like me, who has years of experience, it's a crap shoot putting a system together. Maybe I should become a music enthusiast consultant and help people figure out what to buy within their budget that will give them the sound they're looking for.
Great
The most incredible man in all of audio - Jonathan!
OMA university!
Outstanding, your videos are more about just being a human being, infused with your experiences into analog audio...Great!
Thank you. Thanks again, Jonathan for videos on your thoughts and experiences with audio. You are a treasure!
Stupendous...
Jonathan...The most interesting man in audio!
I'm completely floored by these outstanding works of art! I, too, would dare buy them given the chance...My hats off to you!!
👍
For 30 years I wrote as Sam Tellig. This is a good part of why I quit 10 years ago. I never fit in with the audiophile zeitgeist. Jonathan, you are RIGHT: audiophilia nervosa is a perversion and a disease. The "industry" is largely about commerce, not music.
Hi Sam, er, Tom. I read your writings religiously when I started out on my audio journey back in the mid '80s and you had a lot of good advice for newbies like myself when you wrote as the audio cheapskate. I only wish I had listened to your advice and bought that Naim Nait 2 you recommended back in the day, I'd probably still have it today. Thanks for all you did to make audio fun.
@@georgeswanson9483 Thanks for your kind words. I wish I had kept the Nait 2. But I did buy the new Musical Fidelity A1.
Nice to see you again
Honors a country that honors quality, then (rightfully) bashes an industry that values power and inefficiency. Yes, he shows his wares on a cover...but this co. doesn''t follow the herd, so a little pride...
Agree with every single word spoken.
Amazing video. Bravo.
Sounds like you don’t like the game you’re in and got kicked out. It’s a tough market but you seem to be doing well. Quit bitching.
I could listen to Jonathan talk about speakers all day
A lot of talking, but I’m not hearing anything. That Bride of Frankenstein turntable is the back is hideous!
Wow 🎵👍😊
SwissGroove Webradio was in Japan in late August. Jonathan, you are right, people were there to listen to the music. Every city my partner and I visited, we went to the local kissaten. After a long day of sightseeing, he would find 2 to 3 kissas for us to visit. He would consume a beer or two, while listening to Charles Mingus, Shirley Bassey, and who ever else the owner played. He conversed with the owners about the music and their audio systems; using facial expressions, gestures, body language and utilizing his limited Japanese vocabulary. It was an experience of a lifetime. It was a great trip; a dream come true!
In late August 2024, I was fortunate to spend two weeks in Japan; Tokyo, Hakone (Mt. Fuji), Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima. My partner and I visited every city's kissaten. Game over. 🙄 You're right. Game over. For you.
QRD are very well known, work great with wide dispersion speakers, and are effective anywhere there is room. Their dispersion needs at least 6 feet to be uniform and avoid comb filter effects. These are very narrow with few wells, but with lots of extra flutes as if intended to extend and diffuse higher frequencies. Or maybe just to look cool. Not a lot of technical expertise on display making it hard to know which.
I sent you a DM on Instagram, I hope we can connect.
