Grading rocks, via mud, for progression from Stage 1 rough grit
Just how i classify or grade rocks from rough grit to go or not go to next grit. This batch had more really gouged up rocks that I knew would take a long time or need extra help to progress.
I find that using the mud to show me the bad spots works the best. For a couple years, I had been washing them off, then trying to look at the scratches with magnifying glass etc. Figured I’d post a boring video to show how I now do it. I strive for as-close-to perfect polished rocks as I can get, which all starts with the rough grind being complete. Basically, you can feel many of the faults by touch, not all, but a lot, so as you grab one, start feeling around it for faults.
Lake Michigan rocks, all found by me, I run mixed batches. Lortone rotaries, then finish in Lot-O vibe. This is just for stage 1, rough grit, 60-90 is what I use. By “grinder”, i now have a cab machine to use, but previously used dremel with diamond bits to grind crevices/craters out enough to allow other rocks to work that area.
Then I restart a batch again, adding new rocks or wait for the ones that need machine ground to be added back, to the perpetual rough grind process.

@ at first it seemed ok. I have xxL hands and found no matter the grip it rocked around for me. Much prefer my Lynx grip now (scratched well with 80 grit sand paper). Also have joker Ember, scratched up well, its nice also. I have a Nokta simplex plus that I have been using the paste 2+ years but I want to upgrade and I had my eye on this Minelab X-Terra Elite. So how do you like this Machine ???
@@RickyD1968 I tried a simplex and + in the past. Didn’t keep for whatever reason at the time. I really like this elite. Considering the budget pricepoint, you step into that higher end performance realm. I have it as a spare, but don’t feel like I’m limited much by running it if it were my primary. It pretty much does like 85% of what my 900 does. As far as nokta vs, its like neck n neck with their triple score. I much prefer the minelab tones/sounds and how it just sounds stronger at times, rather than quick zips. The shaft is excellent for stowimg, sturdy, long enough for 6’3”++, but is heavier than a 900 for comparison. Target id’s are decent to pretty good, much better than the standard xterra pro was. I highly recommend it to anyone looking in that price bracket etc

Thanks man, I can tell more about the test that way! ☠️👍 I generally run for best depth in Field 2, Beach 2 or Prospecting 2 multi. Also, once you find a target you want to use as a depth test... I manually adjust the noise cancel to see what setting goes deepest.
@@johnnyhiett yeah, I just hate how park/field 2 pick up the tiniest of micro fragments, especially in the parks I hunt. Seems like park 1 isn’t quite as bad at screaming at those. Beach 1 definitely hits deeper than 2 here, salt free, but there is very high magnetic sand in areas, which can really hinder depth, maybe 2 would be better in that, will see. I’m liking this 900 more than the manticore at this point, but my water season is drawing to a close now. So glad you made this, but I can't tell which version of the firmware you are using. The newest one for 2024 or the previous one. Also, I realize you are very experienced at using these detectors. I've found when testing depth or test results with the 900, that using DP tones goes deeper and produces much better results. I use DP tones all the time unless I have some custom shallow search going on. Thanks for the video!👍
@@johnnyhiett 2024 latest update (as of date of this video). Occasionally use Dp when water hunting. Reverted back to a 900 recently, after my second manticore developed an issue that muffles the speaker’s ability to work (when subject to tons of submersion).
Thanks! I understand now. Have you had any difficulty or advantage with the firmware upgrade? Thanks!
@@johnnyhiett hadn’t ran it other than with the update. I had one very briefly to test prior to this, pre-update, but switched to a manticore right away when those came out. I’m actually liking this 900 quite a bit, maybe because of using an 800 for a few years.
@UABFWSS Understood. I ran the 800 about 2 years till the 900 came out. Of that about 300 days of Florida beach and in-water detecting. No leaks. About 40 days of KY clay soil relic hunting. I got the 1st 900 that sold in Florida and have used it with the same duty days. I didn't consider getting the Manticore. Equinox was lighter, shared coils with my 800, red backlight for turtle season, common menu to 800, perhaps better battery life. And now can use the Xterra coils etc. Of course cheaper. It is amazing.
Thanks for the tutorial! I have the Manticore and running out of silver targets in my area so this will open up some new targets for me :)
Is it possible for you to do a comparison between the mine lab elite versus triple score
@@6061lucky I flipped a coin between the two, but no plans to get a triple score. They’re so close in performance, from lookin at other comparisons.
