Resident Evil Survivor [PS1] - Retrospective Review - RustPromoter DX

    They really went for it with the N64 version. Accuracy to the film, cutscenes, graphics, use of expansion pack, amount of audio, multiplayer suite, etc

    Entertaining review. Longtime Contra fan and adore Neo Contra. It’s hard, but not irritating like Shattered Soldier, has an insane story, some killer techno, and a Samurai! What’s not to love. Shattered Soldier was simply not fun, and way too repetitive; basically a boss rush. Neo has longish levels followed by mental boss fights. The graphics are charmingly old school and there’s plenty of replay value. Great job highlighting a forgotten gem from back in the day.

    What’s better about the N64 version besides including the multiplayer is that the graphics are better.

    N64 had a longer campaign amazing multiplayer with bot support and good maps and was a fun challenge to 100%. The PS1 version had an 11 mission campaign and 2 difficulties. The N64 version had more content and more effort put in so the N64 version is way better to me.

    I never played Shattered Soldier at the time and wasn't even aware of it until I was older, so Neo Contra was always the canon PS2-era Contra game to me. I was really into it from the beginning and didn't mind the change in gameplay. It still retains the crazy personality of Contra, even better than Shattered Soldier I think, and that's what matters. Would have loved some actual twin stick controls though.

    I spent a lot of time and I had a lot of fun conquering this game as well as playing the Multiplayer with friends. N64 was more of a complete package. PS1 version only wanted to show off their included clips from the movie, I think the reading on the N64 kept players more intrigued and wanting to find out what was next.

    The N64 version control scheme was amazing. The ability to lock on to enemies close to the center of the screen while still keeping direction if moving and not facing directly towards them made aiming and movement and strafing all with a single stick feel more natural than it had any right to be. The stop-breaks from shooting gave the gameplay a good balance between action and recovery that isn't seen as much in newer games. And everything about the game felt very distilled...as if every element of a good shooter was there, but nothing extra made the cut. It feels very pure. The game has 16:9 widescreen support, and visual quality holds up decently well when rendered even in a higher resolution, so it can also emulate beautifully when played on modern hardware, and hold up to modern games much better than it has any right to. This game is under-appreciated, and arguably felt smoother to play than GoldenEye.

This game is also secretly a Mario game and since its a secret Mario game it plays best on Gamecube in my opinion you can aim down sights holding the left bumper instead of a stick like in the xbox or Ps2 versions, I own all three ports so I speak from experience

    I started filming an in-depth review of TND and the other games in this action collection boxset back in 2014 but never finished/released it. I must say, bravo my friend. Your review is unbiased and measured - something hard to find when talking about this game. It isn’t perfect, but if you don’t compare it to Goldeneye, it’s not bad at all! Really enjoying all of your content.

    Must say I like the PS1 version more, probably because that's what I played first and learned to know all the levels inside out (cue high scores), then mastering them weapons (cue higher scores). Nobody seems to mention them unlockable cheats that version has, they're semi-fun. Don't own many versions of this game though, only the original PAL/UK version - SCN covers, American original and Greatest Hits, plus the French one as a promo disc. Never owned the N64 version, but played that one a bit through emulation with a keyboard - it makes some bits quite difficult. If I were to play with real hardware, certain missions would probably still be infuriating. Fun game otherwise. Muzak I find better on PS1, them loops are just criminally short. Outside main menu, both of them span over one minute.

    • @rustpromoterdx
      @rustpromoterdx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not know about the unlockable cheats! That is really cool. I love when games used to do that. A fun reward for doing something specific in a game. Not something you see much anymore sadly. Glad you like the PS1 version, Love that you have the different versions!

    • @PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH
      @PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sometimes wonder if people never visit Options. I would recommend doing that. Not only because them cheats are a submenu over there. Along control customization (this is also in TND). Which leads me to think that I have no idea what is it exactly with controls that makes people say that they suck, I can not play for a while and come back, adjust after a few seconds and breeze through the(m) game(s). But seriously, these PS1 games are not as bad as the impression internet gives with them. Except 007 Racing, I can get behind some of the thing internet says about that one. Except the "can't scroll items backwards" part, that's not true.

  • @PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH
    @PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've played a bit of GoldenEye since one of me friends had it, meanwhile I played a lot of these PS1 007 games, still do. This one I've probably played the most. It's a fun little game and most peoples seem to struggle with it for some reason, I don't. As a hint, avoiding analogue stick is great, that part is done badly, that abrupt sneaking when the stick is in certain positions suck. Driving is fine (You can use both sticks there!) and skiing is fine with them though. Probably the best version of the game is the American one, all others have some odd issues with scenes ending too early and some dialog goes unheard. (Using PS3 may bring some issues with that version as well.) That said I own the following releases: the original UK/English - SCN covers, Platinum UK/English - SCN covers, original German, original French, original American, 'Murican Greatest Hits, 'Murican Collector's Edition (the whole complete EA Action set), the only Japanese release and UK/English promo disc version. And that's just the game itself. And I've played through every single one on me PS1. Completed both difficulties without losing a single life and done mission 4 without taking any hits. What do I win? Finally, no revisions with this game, so all discs in them regions have the exact same data - unless one cares about things, it doesn't matter which disc one gets. Gotta admit, I've gotten my copies for cheap prices, while living in Europe of all places.
